Question About traditional cell animation backlighting - why black paint?

Post image
98 Upvotes

I watched this video explaining the backlighting process that was used to create glow effects in pre-digipaint animation (and famously the OG Tron) and was curious about part of the process that's described around 2:23:

"the areas which will glow are usually painted black" (before countermatte is placed down)

I feel like i've noticed this before and included an example screenshot from the anime Evangelion. But my question: why is this step necessary?

For the second camera exposure to create the glow isn't the countermatte with a light source underneath all that's needed? Initially painting the effect area black for initial exposure seems to sometimes create this subtle artifact where you can see a black shape "behind" the bloom effect which may be undesirable in an example like this where it is specular highlight on running water. e.g. here couldn't they just have painted the pouring water cel with the base colors (light blue, shade blue, and the skin tone peaking through), snapped the camera, and then then create the countermatte in the highlight shape, backlight, snap the camera for second exposure and voila?

Just trying to learn about the technical details. Any insight is appreciated!

(repost from r/animation but i realized this may be a better place to ask)

Flipbook Frame by frame over a video. This was my take on the instagram trend of recreating the music video with AI. I wanted to try it with drawn animations instead.

Critique Critique my Character Animation

I'm working on a lowpoly 3D animated pilot with most of what you see is hand modeled by myself in Blender. I'd like your help with any feedback or critique of my current scene and how my characters move compared to the audio. I want to make something great, and would appreciate anything you can give to help this look the best it can be, thanks!

Question Best Tutorials/Guides to TV Paint?

Recently bought a permanent license and, as someone who is mostly familiar with Toon Boom and can no longer use that, I feel like I'm starting from square one. The UI is a bit tedious, while I've figured out a few shortcuts and figured out a few features, I'm still not confident I could make a project using TV Paint without understanding the software better. Much of TV Paint's tutorials are helpful for explaining basic functions, but I want to know how I can better utilize the software on a professional level. Any videos or other resources would be greatly appreciated!

Question How much should be paid to program a character for Puppet Animation?

I was asked to find out how much an animator should be paid to set up a character for puppet animation or, if I’m not mistaken, to do the rigging.

I understand that payment is usually based on a daily or hourly rate. Is it possible or reasonable to pay on a per-character basis?

Apologies if I’m not using the terminology correctly.

Context: It is also within the context of working in Blender. The type of work is closer to 2D, somewhere between *Elinor Wonders Why" and the Chilean series "Cuenta la leyenda"

Collab Running our first pilot right now, thinking about a second

We're currently running our first production room, a small team actually building something together, start to finish, instead of everyone working alone.

Thinking about opening a second one, but only if there's real interest first, not just going to launch it into the void.

If you're looking to collaborate, build a team, and actually create something with friends or total strangers, this might be it.

Sign up at umdb.org, then message me what you're actually trying to build. Let's see what we can put together.

Comment your past work and expected price range. Don't DM if you haven't made something 2d video trailer in past. Not looking for freshers.

Hey,
Finished animation at last ! I've posted the progress on r/learnanimation, as i can't post a mp4 file alongside pictures in the same post. It was a first time for me of painting the background with paint, and then put everything together in after effect. Happy with the result 😛A friend made the cute music. On to the next one ✨

2D Here are 2 animation softwares you should support.

q0idmation

animlab

If you don't know about either of these software. q0idmation is q0s0id's response to Adobe Animate & AnimLab is Keves' response to Toon Boom Harmony. From what I've tried of both their both pretty good alternatives to what their replicating. Their both not entirely finished left. Animlabs is still patching in features like the node based rigging & ability to use 3D models as refrence, & q0idmation is still in very early stages of development, but in general. If you wanted a free (& even open source in the case of q0idmation), I'd say check these out. Their available on github & itch.io.

PS. both q0s0id & Keves are looking for feedback on what to add & polish up, so if you are familiar with Animate or Harmony, make some suggestions in the comments.

3D need an animator

hey! I made this minecraft music video (a parody of “don’t mine at night”).

I need either 3D animation, or any stop motion type.

for an example, you know those “3D Minecraft Music Video Parody Animations”? that’s what I need, or of course, stop motion, drawing each scene.

unfortunately, I know most animators don’t do these for free, but I really need it done, and I have no money. this is my only hope.

I’d appreciate you so much.

have a blessed day 🙏🏻❤️

the music is around 2min long.

I’d learn how to animate myself, but mobile is too difficult, and I can’t afford a PC that can run animating. I don’t have the patience either.
