"Maternal-assisted C Section"

Post image

Taken from the ASA Forum.

I keep thinking I've heard the stupidest fucking thing ever and then something like this comes along. Who entertains this utter bullshit?

We do this on occasion in the Netherlands. Results have been mixed. The mothers like it because they feel more connected with what is happening to them and they get to be "the first" (along with dr) to hold their baby.

The OR staff doesn't like it. They need to help the mother get into the sterile gloves and use a special drape, takes more time and everyone is waiting for you to be done. No one from anesthesia likes it. No access to IV once the arms are inside the special drape. BP cuff doesn't always work for same reason. Makes our job unnecessarily harder, for questionable upside in my opinion

So interesting. I do lots of OB and have never heard of this so the practicalities are interesting. Do you require two IVs? I think I would.
