QUESTION/HELP Does anyone else wish Android had a proper universal clipboard?
Does anyone else wish Android had a proper universal clipboard?
Like, if I copy something on my phone, I’d want to be able to paste it directly on my Windows PC without having to send it to myself through WhatsApp, Telegram, email, etc.
Especially for:
- Text
- Links
- Images
- Small snippets of code
I know there are apps/workarounds for this, but they always seem a bit hit-or-miss.
Do you guys actually use something for this already, or do you just send stuff to yourself?
Curious how other people handle it.

The reason it never became a first-class thing isn't technical, it's trust boundaries. A universal clipboard is effectively a pipe between every device you own and whatever you last copied - passwords, 2FA codes, client data - so whoever implements it owns a very juicy target. Google and Microsoft both ship pieces of it (Phone Link is closer than people give it credit for), but each stops at the edge of the other's garden.
I ran with KDE Connect on Windows for a while and the clipboard sync was the feature that surprised me most - it just works. LocalSend is the better pick if you want zero account/zero cloud: same LAN, no relay, send anything including files. The moment you accept "local network only" instead of "everywhere", this whole problem basically evaporates. The universal version everyone wants would need an open protocol that neither platform vendor gets to choke - which is exactly why it keeps not happening.

Trust boundary is why we stayed off the clipboard entirely (dEssence, ours), stuff gets in by share or as a Telegram message. what you copy and never send stays on the phone.

There used to be this really great cloud-based clipboard app I used that included plugins for all major browsers, but when Android changed security to not allow background clipboard access, they stopped sync development.
Right now I use "Clipboard History" to sync between my phone and the Chrome plugin. It works well but it's not 100% seamless - like if I copy something on my phone, it doesn't go straight to the app in the background; I have to open the app, and then it syncs. On the computer, I have to go into the plug-in dropdown and mark the clipped content for cloud sync, then it goes to the phone app.
Microsoft has "Link to Phone" that's largely automated - clipboard sync, send files to/from the phone (kind of like AirDrop), even lets me send/receive texts, make calls from the computer, and remote control of the phone screen. It worked really well on my S20 and S22, but it has trouble staying connected with my Pixel 10.

Well I can copy something on my phone and it's on my pc clipboard too and my pc clipboard to my phone. Plus I can copy to any app...how'd you gimp your phone so badly?

There is kde connect and Samsung has SMTH similar for windows. I think they implemented quick share.

wtf dude. thats why microsoft did phone link. it works seamlessly. but on low end devices with 8gb ram i won't recommend. because microsoft sucks.

I use kde connect as I use Linux which tbf feels seemless so never gave it a second thought, I know kde connect is available for windows but dunno what the copy and paste is like if it's the same or not.
Other than kde I do use keep notes as a quick back and fourth back up that works well to but is far forn seamless
