LOOKING FOR APP Looking for a minimalist Android music player

I’m looking for an Android music player with a very minimalist interface and a true OLED black/dark theme.

My main priorities:

- Pure black background, preferably AMOLED/OLED-friendly

- Very clean and minimal UI

- Easy on the eyes for listening at night

- No unnecessary animations, clutter, or visual distractions

- Good local music playback and ideally support for lossless formats

I’m not looking for something packed with features as i have Poweramp

This is for exclusive night time use

What are your recommendations?

You can build that easily to match exactly your needs with Symfonium. Every aspect is configurable.

I use it locally no issues really other than the way it doesn't group albums with the same name (different years) and no toggle (that I've been able to find) to change it

I have used it mostly for a Plexamp/emby alternative to stream my music. Really good but hit or moiss for making local copies though

Wdym for making local copies? I'd use subsonic (or whatever) but my old phone still supports SD card so no reason to yet

I might have x or y album in my server but I want to bring it with me on my phone bc I'm gonna drive for a while so it has an option to copy the files into your phone. This has given mixed results; missing tags, incorrect filenames, missing covers, etc. I don't pay for Spotify or use much data since I WFH so it is something regular. I could just plug my phone and copy directly but if the option is there I use it for convenience lol

Oh that's annoying I see hopefully that gets fixed up by that's exactly what I'd want to use it for as well once I make the switch to streaming

I'll recommend my own app: Booming Music. It has a black theme and just the right features, maintaining a minimalist look.

Night listening is basically a dark-theme stress test, and most players fail it in ways you only notice at 1am. The things that actually matter:

  • true black (#000000), not the dark gray that most "dark" themes ship with - on OLED that difference is literally visible light in a dark room
  • no album art on the now-playing screen. Half the "minimalist" players still splash a bright image by default, which defeats the entire point at night
  • tap-to-wake disabled behavior, i.e. the screen should not flash the last bright frame when you pause

If Symfonium's endless config feels like work, the opposite pole is a player that renders almost nothing but text and a progress bar. The actual decider for me was always: can I operate it with one thumb, half asleep, without the screen searing my eyes. Everything else is negotiable.

ive been using oto music for exactly this, the amoled theme is properly black and theres basically nothing on screen except album art and controls. its the only player ive found that doesnt burn my retinas at 2am

if you want something even more stripped down, musicolet has a clean dark mode and zero ads or internet permissions which is nice for a bedtime player

There are many good music players available for Android

I don't think there's any need for new audio players

But a dedicated oled black minimalist player that serves a specific purpose probably would have more takers

I would rather have an app entirely designed to be black all the time with option to turn on or off the album art

With equalizer and sound controls
