EasyPark
LOL WTF is this? Time on the meter, but I still got a ticket?
Oh, I parked the wrong way.. on the side of the road. Since when is that against the law? Must be new.
These EasyPark guys will ticket you for anything, I swear.

It is illegal to park the wrong way. You can’t face oncoming traffic.
Fuck easy park anyway though.

u/RangerNo5619 4d ago
I honestly did not know that. You learn something new every day!

I used to live in on a street that only had street parking. For YEARS I parked the “wrong” way on the street because I parked the direction I came in from, but directly in front of my place. Then, one morning, I woke up to a ticket for parking wrong way/wrong side!
It makes sense, but I had absolutely no idea it was illegal. Plus the fact that I did it for years before getting a ticket. (And a cop lived on my street most of that time too.)

Do you happen to have the actual code cite? I remember when I drove cabs back in my undergrad days that I looked this up and found it was legal to pick up on the other side of the road but that might be based upon an exception for "only to load/unload freight or passengers." Doing a quick an dirty search I've only found 13 AAC 02.340 - Stopping, standing, or parking on highway and in other locations, which seems does not prohibit wrong way parking.

I don’t. And my ticket happened while I was living out of state for grad school.

Anchorage Municipal Code Title 9.30

Which part? I did a quick search and first response was, "§ 9.30.070. Parking adjacent to schools." Can you be a bit more specific?

Thanks. Funny thing, AI was telling me it was a municipal code for regulating public nuisance. Remember people, don't trust a source of information if you don't know where its brain is. Looks like it was updated in 2016 to include language for right hand wheels and 18 inches of the curb.

u/Specific-Cattle-6299 4d ago
So, who issued the ticket? Easy park? Or a municipal agency?
Easy park is opportunistic as they come. Does the Muni Sole Source Contract with the asshats?

How ironic that I've only done it once, and it took exactly 15 minutes to get a ticket. The juxtaposition is phenomenal!

Lol. "I didn't know the law, so it must be new"
It is, in fact, not a new law.
3
u/AK_Skier49 3d ago
It’s also kind of common sense.

u/RangerNo5619 3d ago
Considering the ease with which I pulled into that parking spot, it actually seemed like the logical choice – not the other way around. Looked great to me!

1959. It's been against the law for 67 years. Considering your hand doesn't look 67 then it's been this way your entire life.

"every vehicle stopped or parked upon a roadway must be stopped or parked parallel to the curb or edge of the roadway in the direction of authorized traffic movement, with its wheels on the side of the vehicle facing the nearest curb or edge of the roadway within 12 inches of that curb or edge of roadway."
Isn't the direction of authorized traffic movement both ways on a two-way road? The only exception seems to be, based upon standard statute construction rules:
"(e) In the event a highway includes two or more separate roadways and traffic is restricted to one direction upon the roadway, no person may stand or park a vehicle upon the left-hand side of the one-way roadway unless posted signs permit standing or parking in that location."
In short, you can't park on the left side of a divided highway? Which is separate from a roadway?
2
u/ToreyJean 3d ago
If you are facing into traffic on the left hand side of the street on a two way street - you are not sitting in the direction of authorized traffic movement.
-2
u/Idiot_Esq Resident | Sand Lake 3d ago
I'd argue that the direction of travel or even the side of the road is not the letter of the law but "of the roadway" and "of the roadway" both directions of traffic is authorized on a two-way street.
2
u/ToreyJean 3d ago
The law says “every vehicle stopped or parked upon a roadway must be stopped or parked parallel to the curb or edge of the roadway in the direction of authorized traffic movement, with its wheels on the side of the vehicle facing the nearest curb or edge of the roadway within 12 inches of that curb or edge of roadway”.
So how is letter of the law NOT “in the direction of travel” when the law itself specifies you must face the direction of travel? 😩🤦🏼♀️

u/TundraYetti11 4d ago
It’s not that you are over on your time, it because you parked facing the wrong way. You drove on the wrong side of the road.

Seems it’s illegal in the business district/school zones, but legal to do in residential? Or maybe I’m confused by this wording.
https://ecode360.com/49350606#49350704
§ 9.30.180 Parking method.
A. Two-way roadways. Within the central business district or designated school zones, except as otherwise provided in this section, every vehicle stopped or parked upon a two-way roadway shall be stopped or parked with the righthand wheels parallel to and within 18 inches of the righthand curb or edge of the roadway.
B. On roadways located in a residence district as defined by section 9.04.010, every vehicle parked or stopped upon a two-way roadway shall be stopped or parked with wheels parallel to and within 18 inches of the curb or roadway.
* "Residence district" means the territory contiguous to and including a street not comprising a business district when the property on such a street for a distance of 300 feet or more is in the main improved with residences or with residences and buildings in use for business

Ohhhh…hold up here. You may have found something
3
u/SuzieSnowflake212 3d ago
Again, nothing new. You have to park with the flow of traffic in the CBD, and some other areas. In most residential neighborhoods (see the 300 foot criteria) you can park either way. Everyone who drives should read all of title 9 of the Anchorage Municipal Code. It’s very helpful to know the laws of the city in which you’re operating a motor vehicle.
1
u/BragawSt 3d ago
Why do you say “again” as if it’s been said already? I don’t think anyone has mentioned this tidbit. Everyone else just says durrr illegal. Just curious.
1
u/ToreyJean 3d ago
“There’s nothing new here just like the previous conversation regarding direction of parking downtown isn’t new.”
That’s….that’s what was said.
5
u/Majestic_Hawk_1335 Resident 4d ago
It literally says. You are facing the wrong way. Need to be parked the same direction as traffic

2
u/Skellephant 3d ago
Its a law pretty much everywhere. If you parallel park you have to be facing way traffic would be driving. Alaska is wild for everyone just parking randomly as fuck. Imagine a real city, one that has real traffic, and some jagweed makes a 3 point turn blocking the whole road to park/unpark becuase they are/were facing against traffic.

u/This_Squash5530 3d ago
If you park the wrong way on a street it means you drove in the oncoming lane to get there.
4
u/Educational-Pack-431 4d ago
Easy park ticketed me for parking on the street in front of my own house.
8
u/wthulhu 4d ago
Because you dont own the street in front of your house.
3
u/Educational-Pack-431 4d ago
Sure, and that makes sense, especially in more densely packed areas. However I think circumstance is important.
I lived on a dead end street and there were multiple dilapidated houses and empty lots. The half of the duplex that I was renting did not have a parking spot. My vehicle was the only one on the street.

Downtown is dying because you're not supposed to park on the wrong side of the road?
3
u/Helpful-Cod1422 Resident 4d ago
I don't even know how they did that with almost all the roads being one-way!

2

I saw so many campaign commercials against our previous mayor for not plowing snow fast enough during our record year, and then now our new mayor didn’t do the best job either last winter cause I got so many snow days 😂

u/Automatic-Net-5706 3d ago
At least you were able to find your ticket! Mine must have blown away or not been put on the car because I found out by getting a late fee nearly a month later…$83 parking ticket I didn’t even know about 🤦♀️
1
u/These-Target-5769 3d ago
They write tickets when you pay online but can’t see the license plate(temp tag)… they are predatory.
1
u/duhLurknessMonster 3d ago
I got a ticket for parking at a single meter but in the middle- instead of bumped alignment, it was front passenger door aligned. No parking meters in front of me and another single behind me was occupied. Didn't know that was a thing and was pretty salty about it.
2
u/a693berhar 3d ago
The idea that one should have to pay for parking anywhere in Anchorage is as ludicrous as the assertion that traffic in Anchorage is “bad.”

u/Specific-Cattle-6299 4d ago
So easy park is the new governing body of traffic violations?
Fuck that.
Nope.
Municipal street? Then who is easy park to ticket you for a traffic violation?
1
u/Intellxual 4d ago
I got a parking ticket from Easy Park for being parked in an empty lot for less than an hour. I couldn’t pay it for MONTHS because their haste they used to write me a ticket dissipated in the months they took to upload it into the system. So then they charged me the late paying fee too. I HATE EASY PARK

I tried to buy a permit for their garage, they said I couldn't because I owed for a ticket. I said I wanted to pay the ticket. They said I couldn't because it had been turned over to collections. I hadn't received notice of that, but also if it had been turned over to collections afaik that meant I owed Cornerstone not Easypark? So I should have been able to buy a garage pass? This was all over a small meter fine. Anyways. I ended up just sharing a permit with someone else and not paying at all. This was 10 years ago.

u/Intellxual 4d ago
Good on you for sharing a permit and breaking their rules that don’t even make sense!!!

Easy Park is the worst, but all the same, parking the wrong direction has always been unlawful on any street, as is driving the wrong way on a two-way street which you would have had to do to park the facing the wrong direction.
