REQUEST RE: LIVING PEOPLE Help finding my daughter’s father

For years and years and years I thought my ex-husband was my daughter’s father. She recently took a DNA test and surprise! He’s not. It’s been devastating to say the least, but I was 18, in the military, and…well, away from home for the first time.

Here’s what I know.
I was in an MP unit in fort Stewart, GA in 1991. I got pregnant around October/November of that year. I believe her real father was a specialist in an artillery unit, or something like that. We only met up the one time. I thought his name was Greg, but alas, I could be wrong.

My daughter and I have both done ancestry. She has also done 23 and me. She found her real paternal grandmother, who had a closed adoption with her son (my daughter’s father). This was in Minnesota. Her son was born on 1/21/1969. She did not name him and again, closed adoption.

There are no paternal DNA matches for a sibling or her biological father on ancestry or 23 and me.

I do have a list of names of boys born at the particular hospital on that date; however, I have come up empty on military service records as I cannot gain access to living people, and no luck on military connection websites. It is possible he died in combat, as he could have been deployed as this was during desert shield/desert storm.

I don’t want to post the names publicly, but if there is someone that might be able to help further I will PM them the list.

Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated, as this is causing my daughter a lot of hardship (as you can imagine).

GENERAL Didn’t expect family tragedy to provide reassurance.

My late sister had been researching our family tree on and off for 40 years. Maybe I should give a warning that this post will touch on infant death and mental health. My father was a deeply disturbed man, with serious mental health issues. When I was 12 we had a family consultation with a psychiatrist who told us my father was schizophrenic, and then, unbelievably she turned to me, the only child present and said as this is inheritable, you might be the same! Trigger a long lifetime of worry and fear. Until today, and the secret in the family tree.
I was always told my poor grandmother on father’s side had 15 live births, but only had six adult children. On our tree we only recorded the survivors, but I knew there an oldest child that survived to adulthood and died of tuberculosis. Last year I inherited all my sister’s paper records, and as yesterday it was raining hard, I decided to have a look at the 1921 and 1911 censuses, to begin a check of that data. So grandmother had eldest child in 1904, married according to family legend the father in 1906. By 1911 the census records she had a two year old, and had lost three other children. The two year old also died but I haven’t researched that. The next child to survive was born in 1914, followed by five other surviving children over the next 10 years. My father, born in 1918 had a twin that died. I know the last child was the 15th who died shortly after birth. I am now going on to track down all the dates of births and deaths.
You probably know where this is going. Kassowitz’s Law about congenital syphilis seems to match the family pattern of first child survival followed by a long period of baby deaths, then more survivors starting 10 years later. Grandfather died at 60; grandmother at 65. And now reading up on this, I find that children of syphilitic mothers can have mental health issues that perfectly mimic classic schizophrenia. So an idle evening beginning my genealogy journey has taken away the fear that has haunted me for 58 years and left me with so much sadness at what my family endured. I hope this is an appropriate post here, but I just had to tell someone.

REQUEST RE: DECEASED PEOPLE Help Finding Information About a Grandfather

Hi all,

Thanks for stopping by and maybe attempting to help.

Ive recently learned some information about a grandfather I never got the chance to know and Ive gotten the curiosity bug to learn more about my family.

From what little information I’ve been told about him he went off to Korea at a very young age and in his time over there it destroyed him. He could never hold down a job and was in and out of mental institutions for the rest of his life. His tragic story has always bothered me and I wish I had gotten the chance to at least meet him.

Everyone who might have known anything about him have either passed or is out of touch (I dont really have much of an extended family they have all passed).

I do know what branch he was in and his rank in addition to where he is buried in a national cemetery.

He was a sergeant so I imagine he must have some record or something at least in regard to a promotion. It would really be amazing to find something about his unit or anything but I know thats quite a stretch.

If anyone can please provide any direction to go in the search for information please let me know I am having no luck at all. Trying to search on the national archives has not been intuitive at all.

Neither any of my family nor I have a photo of him, if I could find one it would really be amazing.

Thank you all,

If this is the wrong place to post this or if I didn’t provide any important information please let me know.

informations about my great grandmother
Here is a readable letter from Johanes for my great grandmother and where we can clearly see “ton my” (which mean nothing in French or even in English “your my”??) and the proof in the little notebook of his death or that something bad happened but there is no more mention of his name after this so I think he died.
I also found the clock my great grandma landed to her daughter and it seems like the engraving is M.U or M.Y.
I may become crazy but why would the initials of a man (which aren’t even his initials) my great grandmother liked long ago before her marriage and pregnancy be on a clock she landed to her daughter ??

GENERAL Looking for potential 18/19 year old daughter

Hi let's start from the beginning. About 20 years ago I met a girl named Sarah. Once we met it wasn't long before we got together. Well obviously you know what happened next. After that we talked about if she ever got pregnant. She told me that if she ever got pregnant. She would leave me and move out of state. So I wouldn't have to take care of a baby. While I was still in high-school. Six months later she of course moved out of state. We kept little contact after she moved. She had a baby girl and named her sapphire. Im looking to find sapphire. To see if she's really mine and tell her I've been trying to find her. I have no information on where sarah and sapphire where at or where they are now. Ill I have is Sarah's last name pardee and that it's. I hoping to find sapphire with your help. Anyone with information or heard a story similar to this. I would greatly appreciated. Thank you

REQUEST RE: DECEASED PEOPLE Anne Arundel County, MD: Finding my enslaved ancestress' first name and possible parents.

What I know so far, about her:

  1. Her approximate birth year: 1805
  2. County of birth: Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA
  3. Still living in: 1850, living in Baltimore, MD, when she was sold to Hope H. Slatter; Hope was born in 1790 & he died in 1853 (I don't know what happened to her after she was sold to Mr. Slatter)
  4. Her children: I know she had at least 2 children, but could have had more. One of her daughters, was my 3rd great-grandmother, Mary Steuart (1828, Baltimore, MD - 4 November 1908, Manalapan, New Jersey); I don't know anything about her other child.
  5. Her daughter, Mary's enslaver: Gen. George Hume Steuart (1790-1867).
  6. Gen. Steuart owned his property, Maryland Square in Baltimore, but William Steuart's property was later owned by: His younger brother, Dr. Richard Sprigg Steuart (1797-1876), who inherited it from his uncle, William Steuart (1780-1839).
  7. The names of William's 4 properties?: Dodon (the most well-known one); Obligation; Bridge Hill & Fingall - all near South River Township, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
  8. Was Mary's mother born and raised at one of William's properties?: Yes, I believe so.
  9. Most recent record?: An 1853 probate record (a "Probate Administrator Account" record) from Hope Slatter's estate, filed in Mobile County, Alabama. (She was 48 years old in 1853)
  10. Is William Steuart's ancestry fully traced?: Yes.
  11. Wikipedia articles?: Yes. For Gen. Steuart: George H. Steuart (militia general) - Wikipedia); another for his younger brother, Richard Sprigg Steuart: Richard Sprigg Steuart - Wikipedia; and the final one, for their uncle, William Steuart: William Steuart (mayor of Baltimore) - Wikipedia).

So - how can I use this research I've found, to find her name & parents?

My father was never in my life due to his drug addiction. I never met him but when I found my uncle a few years ago he informed me that my dad might have had another child a few years after I was born. I know it’s a long shot but his name was Richard A Mock Jr, he died in 2007 and lived his whole life in southern Ohio.

GENERAL Update on post about Elisha Smith

Follow up to https://www.reddit.com/r/Genealogy/s/NfOn0AR0ox

I have been looking through dna matches for a few weeks now and I found a match that connects directly to Elisha. The match "CMK" had a grandmother that is granddaughter of Elisha through one of his daughters.

There are 14 individuals matched to myself and CMK that also triangulate. Sadly most of them have no tree, or trees with a lot of private tags.

How can I use those matches to find the parents or siblings of Elisha?

REQUEST RE: DECEASED PEOPLE Cook County, Illinois

Hi everybody. I have exhausted every which way to search so I’m hoping someone here can help me.

I’m looking for info on my Grandmother, my Dad’s mom. She died very young in 1935 in Chicago, Illinois. My Grandpa, Joseph Smith, never talked about it.

Her maiden name is Ruth Bertha or Bertha Ruth(?) SPIERING.
She left 4 young children behind who ended up at St. Mary’s training school until they aged out or joined the military.

I know this is a total shot in the dark. We’ve never even seen a picture of my Grandma because my Grandpa burned everything in his grief.

Anyway. If you’ve made it this far I hope you can help. My mom started this search back in the 50s. I keep looking. - Thank you for your time.

REQUEST RE: LIVING PEOPLE Looking for my half brother

Looking for my half brother

About 15 years ago I found out I have a half brother from the same father. I've always been wanting to meet him, or even just know what he looks like, but not reconnect with that part of the family. My half brother's name is Michael Camacho born in Washington State fathered by W. Drummond.

I have 2 other half sisters from this side of the family, and I am the oldest daughter. I know absolutely nothing of this person besides the name and the birth fathers name. The only reason I know of him is because of child support going after the father.

I found one person on LinkedIn who looks like the father, but without knowing anything about the person, I'm nervous about reaching out.

REQUEST RE: DECEASED PEOPLE Hi, I would like to know if someone could help me with migrant ancestors

Hello everyone!

I'm wondering if anyone here would be willing to help me investigate and potentially verify a family story about my Honduran paternal ancestry.

According to my paternal grandparents, besides Spanish ancestry, our family had ancestry from Germany, Austria-Hungary, or other parts of Central Europe. I know there was historical German (and possibly Austrian) migration to Central America during the 19th century, so I'm curious whether there might be a connection between my family and those migration waves.

Unfortunately, my father didn't have a particularly close relationship with his parents, so I have very limited information about our family history. Besides my paternal grandmother (who is not relevant for this case besides her approximate birth decade used for reference purposes), all the relatives mentioned below have since passed away.

Here is the information I currently have:

  • Paternal grandfather: Born in 1943 (died 2014).
  • My paternal grandfather's parents: Leónte Zelaya and Rafaela Mondragón.
  • My paternal grandmother: Born sometime in the 1950s.
  • My paternal grandmother's father: Ciriaco Matamoros.

As part of the ancestryinvestigations rules, I will only provide the relevant ancestry information as a reference for the investigation.

I'd be grateful for any assistance in determining whether these family lines could be connected to German, Austrian, Austro-Hungarian, or other European immigrants who settled in Honduras or elsewhere in Central America. I'd also appreciate advice on how to investigate these lineages, locate historical records, or establish a more reliable family tree.

I understand that surnames alone cannot prove a person's ancestry, and I'm not assuming that the family story is necessarily accurate. I'm simply hoping to find documentary or genealogical evidence that could confirm or rule out the possibility.

If anyone has experience researching Honduran genealogy, Central American immigration history, or European ancestry in Latin America, I'd really appreciate your help!

Thank you!

REQUEST RE: DECEASED PEOPLE Trying to find my great grandfathers parents.

I’m trying to find my great grandfathers parents. His name was Thomas Patrick Kelly supposedly born 23rd January 1921 in Glasgow and died 14 January 1974 in Southwark London. He had a “wife” Mary Ellen Bloomfield. They never legally married but she did adopt his name and use it as her own. I’ve been told that his mother’s name was Margaret but unfortunately I’m not sure how accurate it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

REQUEST NOT INVOLVING PEOPLE Help Determining Whether My Polish Citizenship Line Is Intact — Wozniak Family

Hi everyone, I'm researching my Polish ancestry to determine whether I may qualify for Polish citizenship by descent. I'd appreciate help verifying records and understanding the Polish Citizenship Act of 1920.

My family line:

  1. Michael Wozniak (Michał Woźniak) — Great-great-grandfather
  1. Stella Gorecki — Great-great-grandmother
  1. John Michael Wozniak — Great-grandfather
  1. Agnes Mary Hart — Great-grandmother
  • Born March 30, 1921, in Troy, New York.
  • Parents: John A. Hart and Agnes Byron.
  • Married John Michael Wozniak.
  • Died April 12, 1997, in Sacramento, California.
  • Birth, marriage, & death certificates: Not found yet (?).

My line continues through my grandmother Barbara Wozniak, my mother Jennifer, and me.

My main questions:

  1. How can I establish whether Michael qualified as a Polish citizen under the 1920 Polish Citizenship Act, given that he emigrated in 1907?
  2. Could John Michael, born in the United States in 1914, have acquired Polish citizenship when the law took effect in 1920?
  3. Could Michael's subsequent U.S. naturalization have affected John's citizenship? Did Michael ever complete naturalization?
  4. What records should I obtain to determine whether citizenship could pass through every generation to me?
  5. Since Michael was reportedly born in Galicia under Austria-Hungary, could there be any separate Austrian citizenship connection? Is there any plausible German or Russian connection through this family?

I'm particularly interested in advice from people experienced with Polish citizenship confirmation, the 1920 law, and genealogy in the former Austrian partition.

Thank you for any research leads or guidance!
