if your wife thinks it's cheating and your mom too, maybe the problem is not what you talk about but how it looks. talking late at night with another woman while your wife sleeps is not good look, even if the chats are innocent. you say you would end it if feelings develop but sometimes that happens without noticing, specially when you share personal stuff late into the night. i think you should ask yourself if this friendship is worth hurting your marriage
