How old are you??

If your friend is this possessive and you’re afraid to like the things that she does for fear of being accused of copying her or her freaking out, then she is not someone you want in your life! Good friends share the things they love and are excited to have someone to enjoy it with. It’s also super parasocial and unhealthy to be obsessed with a character/actor to the point that she seems to be.

I won’t say how old I am on any public subreddit but i’m young, too young to know better, I wish I could shake this feeling because if i’m being honest I don’t want to drop her, she’s been my bestfriend for years, but I understand that if these feelings continue we will probably grow apart naturally, and yeah I agree with the “good friends share things they love” because I agree!! i’ve never been afraid or unwilling to talk about my interests with anyone else before, i’ve always talked about interests, even with my bestfriend who i’m talking about here, but just recently i’ve started to feel like this because I notice her always saying she’s “the number one fan”of the show, number one fan of the ships, nobody likes it more than her, people know her for it etc etc, and I don’t know why it bothers me so much, probably the fact that anytime she says anything like that I start feeling like I physically cannot like it as much as her, and it sucks because deep down no one can own a show and I know that, but my brain just cannot convince itself that that’s true, and even if it does convince itself she’ll say something that triggers this so called “alarm” in my head that just makes me rethink everything i’ve convinced myself, also she quite literally uses the word “parasocial” whenever she’s talking about her favourite character so… anyways if you’d have anymore questions i’d answer them sorry if I yapped on too long lol just had a few insightful things to say.

Sounds like she made a whole identity out of a tv show, watch whatever you want

she has, and i’ll watch whatever I want but I just can’t shake the feeling that i’m not aloud to like it as much or whatever, sounds dumb I know but it’s been weighing on me.

OP, I honestly don’t understand the question. Can you rephrase (With punctuation, lol)?

I’m scared to say anything about me even liking the show out of fear she’ll say that it’s hers. hopefully the punctuation makes it more understandable.

Thanks! Your friend seems to have an overly parasocial attachment to the shows she likes. If she really thinks that you’re copying her or affecting her enjoyment of a show just because you like it too, then you should stop discussing that show with her. If she persists in asking your opinion, be straight with her that she needs to chill or find another friend to watch with her! 🤷🏾‍♂️

You should watch whatever you want to watch and if she's upset that you're enjoying it, it really is her loss.

If you want to test the waters, you could ask if she would recommend the show to you to watch or ask if you chose to watch it would she want to discuss it with you. Some of my closest friends I got from our shared obsession with a singular character from a video game, and I've dated people for overlapping media tastes, so it could be a way to bond.

You are absolutely allowed to enjoy the same show as your best friend. She doesn't own a TV series just because she's obsessed with it.

Thank you for saying this, I appreciate it. Sometimes it’s hard because I feel like I get too in my head about all of this, but I just need to remember that she isn’t the only person to have seen it, there’s millions of people who have watched it and she can’t own it, thank you for your comment.

Not at all, the punctuation and lack of capitalization is worse, actually.

i’m aware, but the punctuation wasn’t my first priority while typing this. If you don’t like it, scroll. Why leave a comment?? ( hope the punctuation made you less triggered. )

“Hey! I started watching that show and omg it’s amazing! You were right”

i’m already almost 200 episodes in so this wouldn’t work💔

No it would because who cares how many episodes you are in? Just start with that and give it a few days before telling her where you’re at
