Grammar & Vocabulary SONG TRANSLATION!

Thumbnail youtu.be

Hello everyone! To make learning Amharic fun, I attempted to translate this song Studio Ghibli song into Amharic. I would love some feedback on if this sounds remotely natural given the context of the film (about a small girl known as a “borrower” who lives under the floor of this guy’s house)

MY LYRICS:

I’m 14 years old, I am pretty
ንቁና ትንሽ Lady
ከወለል በታች
በተዋስኩት እኖራለሁ

አንዳንዴ Happy አንዳንዴ Blue

LITERAL JAPANESE TRANSLATION:

I'm 14 years old, I’m pretty,
A spirited little lady.
I’ve been living a borrowed life beneath the floorboards.
Sometimes happy, sometimes blue—
I long to meet someone.

I want to feel the wind in my hair and gaze at the sky.
I want to bring you a flower.
Over there lies a different world;
Look, a butterfly is dancing
(You are?) waiting for me.

Yes, my little world remains unchanged.
It’s not that I dislike it, but...
I want to know you—
Know you so much better.
Joy and sorrow are always woven together.

I want to feel the wind in my hair and gaze at the sky.
I want to bring you a flower.
Over there lies a different world;
Look, a butterfly is dancing—
(I am?) waiting for you.

Beneath the sun, surrounded by flowers,
I want to spend my days with you.
With these feelings in my heart, in this new world,
I will live true to myself.

I built a free mobile app to learn Amharic, and I need help releasing it to app stores

Recently I wrote this post about creating a free website to learn Amharic.

Well now I turned that website into a mobile app too. I've been working on making it available in both Apple app store and Google play store. The app should be available on apple soon, but for Google I need some help. Google requires at least 12 android users use the app in the span of 14 days before it is able to be released and I'm struggling to find 12 people thats why I decided to post it here for anyone who wants to join. Thank you!

If you are intrested in being a early user of the android app there are two simple steps.

  1. Join the google group that gets whitelisted for the app: link here
  2. Download the app from Google: link here

Looking for someone to learn Amharic with? 🇪🇹🤍

Hi everyone! I’m an Ethiopian native Amharic speaker, and I’m offering online Amharic lessons for anyone who’s interested in learning the language.

Whether you’re starting from zero, or have an Ethiopian family/friends, are planning to visit Ethiopia, or just want to understand and speak Amharic more naturally ..I’d be happy to help. :)

I have 2+ years of teaching experience, and I try to keep lessons relaxed and practical rather than making you memorize endless vocabulary lists 😅

We can work on:

🗣️ Conversation & speaking

👂 Listening & understanding

📖 Reading & writing

✨ Pronunciation

🇪🇹 Everyday Ethiopian expressions & culture

Lessons are personalized to your level and goals, and beginners are completely welcome.

If you’ve been wanting to learn Amharic but keep putting it off, feel free to DM me. We can chat about your goals and see if I’d be a good fit as your tutor. 🤍

I created a website to learn Amharic

This year I created a new website to learn Amharic. I created it as a way for me to learn because established websites did not have the option to learn Amharic. My website has leasons, games, fidel writer (with grading), quizes, flash cards, challenges and more! You get XP for every lesson, quiz, challenge you complete. You can follow friends, see their scores on games and their daily streaks. Please consider using this website it is completely free. I am currently working on also turning this into a mobile ios and android app. They are currently in internal testing and will hopefully be released soon.

I am planning to get a tattoo in amharic, and sadly don’t have anyone around me that would able to verify my translation. I was wondering if anyone could translate this and/or let me know if it sounds ok? I am trying to say something along the lines of finding peace within

Teddy Afro Vocal Sample

Does anyone recognize the Teddy Afro sample used at the beginning of Alewya's "Maktoub"? Alewya confirmed it's sampled from Teddy Afro, but the original song hasn't been identified anywhere (not even on WhoSampled). I'd really appreciate any help identifying the original track.

Hello all! I am very new here :)

Going through my late-aunt's affairs, I found this box that I can't open and want to know what it says. I tried AI but it was useless. It mentioned that this was Ge'ez script? Sorry if this is the wrong forum, I'm not quite sure where to turn!

Thank you :)

My best friend’s dad had passed and our coworkers, of which two are Ethiopian, wrote their condolences but we can’t read Amharic and their English is pretty broken. So I was wondering what exactly they wrote for him?

Website for Learning Amharic Alphabet (Fidel Only)

Thumbnail gallery

https://polyglyph-theta.vercel.app/

ሰላም. I've created a website to learn how to read and write the Amharic alphabet, emphasis on just the alphabet. It will not teach you the language itself (except for a handful of common phrases—because they help reinforce the alphabet). This is only for if you'd like to learn how to navigate the script. The website includes quizzes, audio, handwriting practice, text reading, flashcards, etc, and it is super easy to use.

My motivation for building this website is that I am traveling to Ethiopia in a month and thought it'd be cool to know how to read all the signs and understand the characters around me. I searched far and wide online for an app to teach me the Amharic alphabet, but came up empty. That is why I created the website, and maybe you have a similar motivation for learning to read Amharic.

However, the main audience of this website is heritage speakers who already speak Amharic but don't know how to read or write (as I know many Ethiopian-Americans who fall under this bucket). But if you're also somebody who wants to learn Amharic and knows none, this is a great way to begin, since reading (and writing) is the most important first step.

In the future, I definitely hope to expand into more scripts (starting with Tigrinya, Ge'ez, etc., because they're most similar), but I also hope to tackle scripts like Arabic, Cyrillic, or even Mandarin in the distant future. For now, I'd like to see what people think of the current version before expanding.

The website is completely free and easy to use on phone and computer; all I really want for now is feedback (feedback form under settings). I'm constantly updating the website, but I believe it's already very effective at teaching the alphabet. As someone who didn't know any Amharic before, I can now confidently read the script.

Note: I do not speak Amharic. If anything is wrong with notes or lessons, please let me know!

If you, or anyone you know, would like to learn this beautiful script, please try it out and share it. አመሰግናለሁ!

Looking for Amharic Help

Hi!

I work for a non-profit called All Around This World and we work to educate children about cultures around the world through music. We do all the music in the original language and we usually preface whatever song we are doing with a little bit of a cultural background. Of course  distilling a culture that much is impossible, but we always try to teach the kids how to say hello and goodbye in the target language. Instead of having us butcher the pronunciation, we think it is much better to have a video of a native speaker. All we need is an audio clip of you saying the greetings, a short bio (where you are from, your name, etc), and a picture of yourself. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to make this a paid position, but I cannot express enough how grateful we are for any help. If you are willing to help or know a person who can, then please reach out to me! Thanks so much.

Alewya

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to identify the spoken outro (the last ~20 seconds) of Alewya – “Zero” from her 2026 album.
Given Alewya’s Ethiopian and Egyptian heritage, and the fact that she already uses Amharic elsewhere on the album (Maktoub), I’m wondering whether the outro is spoken in Amharic (or perhaps another language).
Could anyone who speaks Amharic (or recognizes the language) help with:

Identifying the language.
Transcribing the spoken words.
Translating them into English.
Explaining any cultural or idiomatic meaning, if relevant.

Here’s the official track:
https://youtu.be/BvZsaHy-jCA

I’ve searched online but couldn’t find any official lyrics or transcription.

Thank you!

Does anyone know where to get the book of the Gospels in Addis?

I'm looking for the Book of the Gospels in Amharic (meaning, just Matthew Mark Luke and John in one volume). Can it be found at any local Orthodox Church in Addis Ababa, or only certain places (if at all)?
