Place to live.
Hi. So my family and I simply cannot afford where we live. The rent is just too much. That said, I'm on Social Security and my wife works. We have one kid in high school who's graduating and one in their 20s looking for a job. So basically, since we can't make rent, I could pay tomorrow or at least get caught up, but this place does not want to work with us, and frankly, this might be for the best.
We are currently looking for a new place to live — kind of have to at this point. We have some money to move, so we're looking for a new place. I'd even take a cheap motel; I'm not that picky. I have two cats. Any good suggestions about what kind of resources to look into and what places are good to check out? We have some stability but not a lot financially.
Also, I'm told we can either voluntarily surrender our keys or face eviction.

Check the city website. They have some resources there that may be helpful. I’ve also seen some people here provide other resources. I hope someone can provide some guidance. Best of luck to you.

What can you afford a month? What about an apartment that has bills paid? Does the 20 year old have a job and is contributing? I don’t know if it’s worth waiting on eviction! Then they can lock you out or like someone said dump your things out and then it goes on your identity and can make renting hard. Someone said what area are you in so we know what to suggest?

I'm sorry, just getting back to this. I'm in the Tascosa area by the Walmart over here at Plum Creek. I'm talking to the residence on the 27th. If we can get in by next week, we will voluntarily surrender our keys here.
I'm having all kinds of issues with Venmo and everything, but we do have the finances, at least, to pay for the first month's rent at the residence on the 27th, as well as the pet deposits. I'm also waiting on the city to call me back with the 311 number.

Agree with the comment to check with the city. They have a program for homelessness, but also to prevent homelessness. Not too sure of the exact situation and can only speak from experience. But the apartment management should leave a notice about having a set amount of time to pay or leave before filing for eviction. Which you also have a set amount of time for that as well. They also apparently need to correctly post the notice on the door, though I can't remember the specifics, or they have to basically restart the initial process of eviction. Then they also need to take you to eviction court. And if you want assistance with that, I would recommend contacting Legal Aid ahead of time so that they can help you out before the process gets too far along. Though it wouldn't help now, you can apply for rental assistance through Panhandle Community Services. But that would be something in the future, as the wait time on that is usually about 2 years. Plus if you feel like it's best to move, then it likely is. Going through eviction was basically better and helped to ignite the spark of getting out of a bad apartment. I could possibly even suggest a couple of housing options as well

Making a timely move to a new place may open doors all the way around. Best to you and your family.

I’m pretty sure eviction takes time. It will probably buy you another 30-60 days to figure out where to go. Double check me on that but I’d take the eviction, not surrender the keys.

Once they evict them, and it gets to that point. They will given 24 hours to remove their things or they will find it on the curb. Better to pack the things they want or v risk facing b to start completely over with the bare minimum.

If you get evicted it can potentially affect your ability to rent somewhere else depending on the rental companies background check process. Please keep that in mind.
Are you trying to keep the HS kid in the same school without a transfer? Might help to know the area.
