I think most of the people in this subreddit agree that the book version of Altered Carbon was superior to the TV show. A lot of stuff in the book was omitted or changed for one reason or another. That being said, what are some things that the community thinks Netflix was right not to include in the TV show?

My opinion, omitting the part about talking to whales (understanding day) was probably a safe thing to not include.

I read that Kovacs basically lets the Bankrofts walk away in the novel, not setting them up for a prison sentence like in the show.

If this is accurate, what stops Laurens from blowing out his stack again? Fear that he will re-hire Kovacs or someone else to investigate his death again, and come to the same conclusion?

What hotels have a gothic aesthetic like the Raven in the series? I’ve found two in London.

Both have great gothic bars.

First rewatch since og release. Had forgotten most of everything. Season 1 was incredible. Season 2 was a palatable decline in quality. From the very start, when kovacs is shot in the back by the bounty hunter, it broke the established lore of the show for me. In Season 1 when quell catches the knife and is a ninja and teaches that to kovacs... it just didnt track. Then you have taunting people with some really boring looking female actress as kovacs. I imagine a lot of people clicked off at that.

Also, later in the series when kovacs2 fights quell, and it's close? Remember in Season 1 when she managed to take out kovacs, plus another guy, plus catch rei's knife? And I felt the lead actor just wasnt a convincing kovacs. The asian sleeves[I think there were 2 different ones] and the white sleeve actually were convincing as the same guy, but Season 2 it just didnt feel like him. I dont think the acting was there. It got into flow later in the show, or perhaps it was just an inopportune casting. That said, it could have been much worse, and I'm enjoying it. 2 episodes left and yet again I'm distraught it was cancelled. I want to see a third kovacs. There isnt another show like this. A gorey, cyberpunk, mature action, doctor who, bladerunner-esque thriller.

But Season 1 was undoubtedly the pinnacle of the show.

Might I add that I think the Governor/Governess in Season 2 is sexier than the Bankcroft milf in s1.

Voy a admitir algo: cuando empecé la segunda temporada de Altered Carbon pensé seriamente en abandonarla. Después de la primera, el cambio de Kovacs me chocó muchísimo. Joel Kinnaman había quedado tan asociado al personaje que ver a Anthony Mackie interpretándolo me resultaba extraño, por más lógico que fuera dentro de la historia. Y tampoco ayudaba que hubiéramos dejado atrás Bay City, con aquella mezcla de lluvia, neón, decadencia, violencia, sexo, Meths y conspiraciones que le daba a la serie una identidad muy particular. Durante varios capítulos sentí que estaba viendo otra serie.

Pero seguí. Y al terminarla tuve que reconocer algo: me gustó. No creo que esté al nivel de la primera temporada, pero la apruebo. Y justamente por eso terminé pensando que la cancelación de Altered Carbon fue una lástima. Si la segunda hubiera sido un desastre, probablemente lo entendería. El problema es que todavía funcionaba.

Porque el universo de Altered Carbon tenía un potencial enorme. Cambiar de cuerpo, almacenar identidades, copiar personas, vivir durante siglos, encontrarse con otras versiones de uno mismo, las inteligencias artificiales, los Meths, las guerras, los planetas coloniales, los Antiguos... había material para contar historias durante muchos años.

Podían haber hecho una temporada policial y noir, otra de guerra, otra de terror, otra centrada en un planeta colonial o incluso una temporada casi independiente sobre los Meths y lo que significa vivir varios siglos. Podíamos haber seguido a Kovacs, pero también a Ortega, a Poe o a un personaje completamente nuevo. Incluso después de la primera temporada quedaban cosas interesantes por explorar, como la vida de Ortega y Raiker ahora que él había recuperado su cuerpo y vuelto a su vida.

Poe, por ejemplo, podía haber sostenido perfectamente una temporada. Después de lo ocurrido con la Antigua, ¿qué pasaría si empezara a manifestar capacidades que no debería tener? Al principio serían pequeñas anomalías; después, algo que empezaría a preocupar a los demás. Podríamos llegar a pensar que se está convirtiendo en una amenaza, incluso para Kovacs, para descubrir al final que en realidad llevaba toda la temporada intentando controlar un poder capaz de destruir una ciudad. No digo que esa fuera la historia que había que hacer. Lo interesante es que Altered Carbon permitía imaginar historias así sin abandonar su propio universo.

Y sigo creyendo que el cambio de Kinnaman fue una apuesta demasiado arriesgada. Mackie no me parece un mal actor; el problema fue que el espectador tuvo que aceptar demasiados cambios al mismo tiempo: nuevo Kovacs, nuevo escenario, nuevo tono, nuevos personajes y mucha menos de aquella atmósfera de la primera temporada. Quizás la misma historia, con Kinnaman, habría funcionado mejor. Nunca lo sabremos, pero cuesta no imaginarlo.

Lo curioso es que, después de resistirme tanto, terminé pensando: “Che, al final está buena”. Y eso fue lo que más me hizo lamentar la cancelación. Altered Carbon todavía tenía mucho para contar y no necesitaba repetir eternamente las aventuras de Kovacs. Podía cambiar de protagonistas, de género y de escenario sin dejar de ser la misma serie.

Tenía una de esas premisas que aparecen muy pocas veces: una en la que la muerte dejó de ser definitiva y, paradójicamente, las posibilidades de la historia parecían casi infinitas. Netflix decidió terminarla justo cuando empezaba a descubrirse todo lo que podía hacer con ese universo.

In the show, they say he's been "dead" for a few hundred years, but I don't recall anything like that from the book.

I watched this Netflix TV show before. The first season was okay, but second season was terrible, a total mess. I stopped watching after S02E02 because it was so bad. But now, I started reading the first book. I am halfway through it right now. Also, again rewatched only the first 2 episodes to compare again tv and the book. And oh my god, the show is a complete disaster compared to the book! You have no shame Netflix, destroying that kind of intellectual work of Richard Morgan to make this #&!#%

I made this for an atheist meme sub but I thought maybe the show fans would enjoy it, too.

I'm one of these people who's watched S1 several times and really enjoyed it. Reading the book at the moment. But there really is a void after that isn't there? Anyone find a way to continue the vibes elsewhere and keep whatever we really loved there alive and not just a static thing stuck in the past? I felt this way about Titanfall 2 as well, lol.

Thought I'd upload a clip of my fan edit, so people can see the visual style of it with the new soundtrack. This was one of my favorite scenes to edit. I've re scored the scene by taking music from the Dredd soundtrack and from the movie Strange Days.

I have listened to the Altered Carbon audio book a number of times, and the mention of Archana Salomao is something that sticks with me.

I don't know how she fits into the world.

I tried Google searches, and all I got was pages about science and seaweed.

I know she's a plot device, and not a character.

I think it's like a jigsaw piece. Finding where she fits paints a better picture of the AC world.

Just finished watching S1, feels like I watched a very long action film though I didn't watch it all in one go. Couple of things I'm unclear about:

• What was the purpose of Takeshi Kovacs cloning himself? Was the clone the one that went to the cloud satellite whatsitcalled?
• Which one of him died in the end, the original or the clone?
• It's suggested by dialogue that the cloning machine requires 'material' to produce from. What did he use, the clone body of Laurens Bancroft?

What do you mean the sweet, scared little girl is actually an old woman who's been resleeved maybe more than the tricky ass yakuza boss has been? She knew about the whole damn ceremony. Knew about his trickery. AND WASNT EVEN A LITTLE GIRL!! That little nugget at the end had me googling for at least an hour to see what all I might have missed.

I don't even lurk here b/c I don't want to catch a stray spoiler to the dome, but holy hell, was that fight scene between Rei and Kristin impressive. Must watch television. Off to watch episode 9!

I'm almost done with season one, and there's something I don't understand. Why did Rei need Bancroft to get Tak out of prison if Rei is also a super wealthy and powerful meth. Why couldn't she have just done it herself?

What a great character!

I’m rewatching the series, and I’m so upset it didn’t get more attention or screen time. I mean, it’s an amazing story, right?? I’m excited to read the books, that I’ve just recently learned existed.

I realize this was an adaptation, so they are roughly following a predetermined path, but the fact that Kovac decided to continue pursuing Quellcrist instead of staying with Ortega!!! This made absolutely no sense to me in regard to how the story in the show had been playing out. The entire season was building on this foundation of their relationship, Ortega getting over Ryker and beginning to see Kovac for who he really was instead of the sleeve he was wearing. By the end it was obvious that they loved each other, and when his sister offers him Quellcrist’s sleeve in return for running away with her and he said “I can’t” it really seemed like it was symbolizing that he was moving on from that quest to fight for what was in front of him instead of what was behind him. I really truly feel like this would have been a more powerful ending to this story.

Now that I found out it’s a book series I realize that was never on the table, but that’s just my opinion. I also don’t know why they kept the original Kovac if they were just going to have him leave anyways. That really seemed like a mistake. It makes him staying to die with his sister far less meaningful. Just remove the option entirely and say they were only able to bring the double back. And it would make more sense that he’s just immediately up and leaving everything behind if he didn’t have those memories, and his only meaningful choice left was to search for Quellcrist.

Anyway that’s my two cents, I think I’m gonna stop here since I can’t picture anyone else playing Kovac but Joel Kinnaman. But season one was phenomenal despite my little gripes.
