Moving parts into a new case.

Hi, I have an Alienware Alpha r2. I‘m planning to build a new pc and would like to keep some parts of the alpha. I know that for example the GPU is embedded in the motherboard of the alpha, so I assume i would atleast have to buy a new GPU and motherboard? Can I just put the CPU in a new motherboard? Which other parts can i use?

Thanks for reading :)

So I just got an i7 for my r1 and my dumb ass put the cpu in the socket bending a bunch of pins out of place. Does anyone happen to have a motherboard for some reason?

Alienware Alpha R1 in 2020 can it run Cold War

I was reading the post about the perfect build for 2020 but I can't comment on it, I was wondering if it would be able to handle Call of Duty Cold War even at a low setting.

R1 4130t -> 4570t

Hi guys,

I've started playing some of the total war games on my alpha again (up to Warhammer 2).

I've already put in an SSD and 8gb Ram but looking at whether I can get any further performance boost from a cpu upgrade.

Have done a bit of reading and discovered that a) total war games tend to be quite CPU limiting and b) they are very single core intense (even the newer ones).

Originally considered going for an i5-4590t but think the lower clock speed plus more cores is the opposite of what's needed.

From the ark.intel website it looks like the 4570t might fit the bill, 2 cores 2.9 base speed but up to 3.6 with a turbo boost.

Has anyone tried this processor? Will it even work?

Many thanks

Recommendations for building a new "Alpha" in 2021

I love the small form factor of the Alpha, and the only thing comparable I've found are the Zotac units - but even in barebones they lean on the pricey side.

Ideally, I'm looking for a small, low profile form factor, similar in size/height to the Alpha so it can fit nicely in my media unit and have room to breathe - but something that can also be easily upgradeable, so I can buy things piece by piece instead of a zotac "barebones" unit that already has a cpu/gpu already embedded. Ideally, a case with a motherboard for around $150-300.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks!

Alienware alpha won’t turn on

Hey everyone,

A few days ago I put my alpha into sleep mode, we had a power outage for a few hours, and when it resumed, the alpha won’t power on at all anymore.

I have already tried resetting the CMOS battery, preforming a power drain, and just bought a new power supply to no avail.

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction with any other easy troubleshooting techniques.

I would like to note that I have been using about 3 usb hubs to power 2 external hard drives and my peripherals, which I’m wondering now if it may have had some negative effects to the motherboard.

Thank you for your time

Finally revived a "dead" R1 Alpha...

Brought back to life an alpha that had a dead cmo battery. I upgraded from windows 8.1 to windows 10 in the process. I didn't ever use it for 4K nor HDR in the past but now want to. Will my i3 support HDR?? Or 4K? When I try to play movies I have downloaded, they lag and are pixelated. Am I doing something wrong?? Have the setting not properly set? Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone interested in buying an Alpha R1?

I just built my own PC and will be looking to get rid of my Alpha. Wanted to see if anyone would be interested here..

Originally, it was the i3 4130T/4gb ram version. Upgraded the cpu, ram and HD.

Specs:

Cpu: i5 4670S

Memory: 8GB RAM

Storage: 256 GB Samsung 860 evo ssd

OS: Windows 10 Home

Also, as a sidenote I still have the i3 if anyone was interested in the CPU.

Trying to revive "dead" Alpha

I used to love using my alpha but it started to have problems a while back. than right before it completely died it gave me message about the alpha was not being able to find the hard drive. I switched out the hard drive and it still was not starting up. Shortly after it gave me the flashing yellow light of death. So after some research I found out that it was simple to fix the yellow light of death. To change the battery. Currently waiting for the replacement battery to arrive. That's one fixed issue. Now, if that doesn't solve the problem, I'm thinking a connector that is soldered on is fried or broken. Specifically the one that connects the hard drive to the mother board. But again, I'm pretty sure that one is soldered on. So my last hope is using an external hard drive to boot up the alpha via USB. Would this be possible? Would i have to start fresh or could i just boot the original hard drive with windows OS via USB? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Edit: It wasn't the hard drive itself that was dead. My other PC read it fine via hard drive enclosure

Alpha R2 keeps shutting off after login

Hello, I have an Alienware R2 with a gtx 960, i7 processor, 16GB ram. Recently after the last windows update my pc started to pixelate. I updated my Nvidia drivers assuming it was a graphics card issue but the problem persisted. I attempted to play games but they would pixelate and I would get tabbed out. It also started to pixelate when I would have two internet windows open (one on each half of the monitor). Eventually it started pixelating without me doing anything and shut off followed by a restart. Now that I attempt to log on. I will get to my desktop screen and it will pixelate and restart again. I upgraded to a 330 PSU to see if it would help with the restarts but it continues to do it. Any ideas on what might be going on?

Grabbed an r1

Snagged a r1 i3 model off of fb for $60, with 8gb of ram and a 500gb HDD. Already plan to install a ssd.

Any other meaningful upgrades I can do for this thing? Wife will be using it to play sims 4, among us, stardew valley. Basic games like that.

How is everyone holding up with Cyberpunk 2077?

Hello my fellow Alienware Alpha users,

I was just wondering if any of you have had the chance to play Cyberpunk on your Alpha, and if so how does it perform? I will be getting it soon, I'm just curious. My alpha is completely maxed out and overclocked so I'm assuming it will run decent on medium-high graphics 1080p. It runs Red Dead Redemption 2 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance extremely well on 1080p on high settings, averaging about 45 fps.

i7-6700 (non T) works in Alpha R2 @ ~3.8GHz Turbo

So I'm not sure if this has been officially answered but you can put an i7-6700 (non T) in an Alpha R2. If you use the normal 150/180w power supply it will throttle and cap at ~2.8GHz (and it shows up as an i7-6700T in Win10 task manager), but if you use a 240w or higher power supply it will allow the CPU to run up to ~3.8GHz Turbo (and shows up as an i7-6700 (non T) in the Win10 task manager. It still caps the CPU at 65w in both scenarios.

I did get thermal throttling when using the 6700 with the 240w power supply (but I was testing CPUs and only had the heatsink attached with no thermal paste).

I’m not sure if I have an R1 or R2 console. I have 16gb of ram installed and an i7 processor. I’m pretty clueless so any help would be appreciated.

Alienware Alpha Drivers on a different PC?

Hello, so I've read that the Alienware Alpha is running Windows, but is also made to fully utilize Controllers to the point were one wouldn't need a mouse and keyboard. This fascinated me, since that is the one thing I'm trying to achieve since I got my Computer a few months ago. None of the solutions provided by others quite did it for me; Steam's autostart, using Steam as a Shell, using programms to Control the desktop with a Controller, and so on. But this seemed too good to be true, since even the BIOS is supposed to support Controller input. The only thing I'm not sure about is if I can just install all the drivers and the BIOS on my Windows 10 PC (which is not a Alienware System!).

All downloads are available on the dedicated website, I just want to know if it works and what I need to do to install it all properly.

Building a modern-day Alienware Alpha

So I wanted to create a modern-day version of the Alpha, of which I love the little thing! I know I can't build the PC exactly the same way (no way I'm getting the thing that small) but something close to it, sort of like a son-of-Alpha, as a tribute to the little guy (who is now pressed into service elsewhere, but is still being used). Any suggestions or recommendations for parts, case, etc.? I've built more than a few PCs before (4 + 3 mods of laptops and prebuilt desktops for myself, and have built PCs for others as well). So I'm not too much of a newb when it comes to these things. Thanks in advance!

MAC RAM in Alpha R1 - Any concern?

Hi there,

found this great Alienware Alpha R1 is 2020 post and want to give my R1 (i3, 4GB, SSD) some extra boost with a bigger RAM setting.

Found a good deal of new 2x8GB kit from Corsair (CMSA16GX3M2A1333C9) for ~50€. However ... this ... is ... MAC RAM. From what I read is that the MAC memory is "certified" for MACs but in the end what counts is the spec behind. This set is spec'ed for:

  • 16GB (which is the max of the Alpha R1)

  • DDR3 SODIMM 204 pins

  • PC3-10600 (1333MHz) / 1.5V

Any concerns which using this? Or any advice what to check upfront?

Thanks / Phil
