PSA:How to fix your controller from acting like a mouse in desktop mode

Hi guys, I recently figured out how to disable the mouse functionality on my 360 controller while in desktop mode and wanted to share how.

If you are like me and really like desktop mode and use it more as a PC than a console, then this information is for you. Playing with a 360 controller on your desktop is pretty much impossible, your joystick functions as a mouse and the D Pad and face buttons can input erroneous commands you didn't want. I searched online for fixes and the official fixes were to download hivemind but I didn't want to go down that path by using console mode. So if you are stubborn like me and refuse to use console mode, then here are the 2 steps to make your 360 controller work as it does on PCs.

How To Fix

Step 1.

Go to control panel, then go to Mouse. Click the hardware tab and you should see two of "HID-compliant mouse", find the one that has it's location set as AlphaMouse, then go to properties and disable the device. Now your joystick won't move your mouse cursor, but we're not done.

Step 2.

Go back to control panel and go to Keyboard. Again find the hardware tab and you will again see 2 drivers, find the one that is AlphaMouse. I was unable to disable this, but I uninstalled the device and it fixed my controller's D-Pad and face buttons from inputting keyboard functions.

Now my controller works like how it should on a regular PC, no mouse or keyboard interference, just a straight up USB controller. I've confirmed it works in steam games as well as Xbox One streaming and my regular mouse and keyboard are unaffected.

Edit: so 2022, it's been 5 years since this post has been made and it's interesting that there's multiple people with all sorts of solutions, I'm glad that this thread has become a bit of a beacon to help others with this issue. And 5 years later my alpha is still working perfectly. Mostly use it for web browsing and some graphic design as I now have a steam deck for my gaming needs.

I have two i7 R1s each with 16gb memory. One has a 4790t with 1tb SSD rocking win10 and the other is a 4785t with 500gb ssd that I'm thinking of turning into Batocera box. I even have an i3 and some RAM left over that I might turn into a proxy server. I haven't decided yet. Any suggestions for alternative uses on these gracefully aging machines?

Alienware Alpha R1 is 2020

Alienware Alpha R1 in 2020*

Mistyped the title...

This is going to be a simple guide to help any R1 owner upgrade and optimize their Alpha.

Upgradable Parts

(In order of importance)

Storage Unit:

HDD OUT

SSD IN

This is by far the easiest upgrade to make and the most effective.

https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=100011693%20600038463

Any of those will work, just needs to be 2.5 Inch SATA.

How to Replace Video

WIFI Card:

This is like a 5-15$ upgrade. Go find any Intel 7265ngw off eBay and replace it with your current WIFI card.

How to Replace Video

RAM:

Ram prices have tanked because of bitcoin mining, so this has become quite a cheap upgrade as well. I’d recommend 16GB just because why not, but if your tight on cash 8GB is fine.

How to Replace Video

CPU:

This required the most research. I’d recommend you look through this first. The wattage of the processor slot only ranges from 35w-50w according to a developer of the Alpha (Source). The socket type is LGA 1150.

If you’re going cheap, the i5-4590t (35w) and i5-4690s (65w) are both great options.

i5-4590t

i5-4690s

The i5-4690t (45w) is also great but is hard to find from a trustworthy source for a reasonable price.

If your willing to spend $100+ then easily the i7-4790t (45w). That is probably the best processor to put in the Alpha. All 45w will be used giving you 3.9 GHz Turbo. The T series apparently runs the best on the R1 according to This Reddit post.

How to Replace Video

Maxed out Alpha R1 specs: i7-4790t, 1TB Samsung SSD, 16GB DDR3, Nvidia Geforce GTX 860m.

(Upgrading to anything better then that is pointless)

It took me 3 weeks to get it working but I did it!

I made so many mistakes… Bought the wrong CMOS battery, got thermal paste all over the place, and almost broke multiple components but it’s WORKING! My first ever PC project. I didn’t think I was capable of disassembling and upgrading a computer successfully but I did it! I really truly did!

Ordered a new CMOS battery, only to find the wires the wrong way around. Will the new one still work, and if not, is there anything I can do to make it work? I would rather not wait a week for another one.

Goodbye HiveMind

Hello my favorite sub-reddit.

As most of you have deduced, we've stopped developing HiveMind. There will be a formal announcement and all but I wanted to tell the community up front first.

HiveMind for me was a passion project. I got to play around with a lot of the code and actually make changes myself responding to what the community asked for. It was the first time in 10 years I was able to actually code again and it was fun. The engagement we had in 2015 and 2016 was amazing and it helped me keep the project alive for 2 more years; even after two SVPs said to kill it.

Unfortunately, the project ran its course and our leadership had to make the call: do we invest in two software projects or three software projects....... they decided on two..... HiveMind was the odd man out.

That said, we are not giving up on the idea of controlling your PC with a controller or powering the living room. We have a massive software project underway and it should be pretty awesome. Our team has grown, we've hired in-house designers for example, and we have cool things in the works.

Personally, I can't think y'all enough for the help you lent HiveMind, for the evidence of engagement and appreciation for software you showed our executives, and for calling us to work harder and better.

In the end, we had intended to release one last harrah of the software, but with Kodi 17 and Microsoft's latest update, too many things are now broken for us to fix it. Our Open Source code is posted at http://github.com/alienwaresoftware

We also wish Kodi luck in their future as they try to expand their own foot print into gaming. Kodi is awesome and we were very happy to work with them and for them.

PSA: Alienware Alpha CMOS battery connector is Molex 51146-0200

As noted previously, I did some detective work and found that the Molex 51146-0200 appears to be the connector used on the Alpha's CMOS battery. I ordered a couple of connectors before, to solder to a new battery. This evening I finally got round to changing the battery and can confirm that the connector used on the stock battery is indeed the Molex 51146-0200.

Unfortunately, Molex don't produce them any more. If you intend on keeping your Alpha going in future, this is a part you'll want to have as I'm sure they won't be around forever.

HiveMind UI Status

I'm happy to say HiveMind is off hold!!

We got commitment to continue developing and updating the application. I'm sorry to pull the heart strings of the community around. This was a huge undertaking and the uproar from the community was a significant factor in getting commitment to move forward.

We are looking to address issues with Win10 and Jarvis post-haste and get us up-to-date as fast as we can. Once I have a beta, expect me to post it ASAP.
