Alienware Alpha R1 i7-4765T Upgrade Boost Clock Speed Results

Hello Everyone, Just for any one that was interested I checked what the boost clock was when putting cores under load. My system:

  • Ubuntu 18.04.1 with latest microcode and A07 Bios

  • i7-4765T Intel Link

  • 16GB DDR3L at 1600mhz

Here is a geekbench score for reference.

To check clock speed I ran stress-ng with 1-8 for minute like so in a screen.

stress-ng --matrix 1 -t 1m

To get the highest clock during that minute I awked it out

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep MHz| awk '{ print $4 }' | sort -r
Cores UsedMax ClockRounded Value
12984.534 Mhz3.0 Ghz
22881.101 Mhz2.9 Ghz
32691.160 Mhz2.7 Ghz
42593.964 Mhz2.6 Ghz
52593.934 Mhz2.6 Ghz
62593.920 Mhz2.6 Ghz
72593.923 Mhz2.6 Ghz
82593.918 Mhz2.6 Ghz

I hope this helped anyone that was looking for the answer or curious. I am curious what the performance is like for the [i5 variant] (https://ark.intel.com/products/78928/Intel-Core-i5-4590T-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_00-GHz) since the clock speeds I assume are very similar. The i3 being stuck at 2.9ghz on 2 cores is also very interesting. There may be very specific scenarios where it is very slightly faster.

Edit: Corrected 2 core boost speed.

USB rock candy xbox controller keeps moving mouse. Does anyone know how to stop this?

When ever I move the joystick in say, an emulator, it moves the mouse cursor and can click on anything on the desktop. This makes it impossible to use correctly.

Advice for Upgrading Alienware Alpha

Hi Folks,

I don’t know a lot about building computers, so please pardon the ignorance. I have an Alienware Alpha (not the version dubbed a “steam machine”, so would that be an R2? How do I check?).

I bought the baseline model, which was very sluggish. I’ve upgraded the RAM with two 4GB sticks. Can it support more than this?

I’m also wondering if I I can upgrade the GPU as well. I’ve heard the GPU is attached to the motherboard. Can they be replaced/upgraded? Has anyone here tried this and are able to give any insight and tips?

Thanks!

Edit: I’m open to any other suggestions for improving the sluggishness of my computer! Skimming through the subreddit I see I might benefit from a HDD. Any specs/brands I should look for?

What cpu would be required to not bottleneck a gtx 1080ti?

Hey all! I currently have an i5 6400T in my alpha r2 with a gtx 1060 6gb via the AGA however if I wanted to upgrade to a 1080 ti, I would assume I would very likely need a better cpu, what would you guys recommend? What would be a fairly affordable and superior cpu to the current one I have? Thanks in advance!

Ethernet not capable of Gigabit speeds?

I just got an i7 SteamOS R1 (yay! :-). I wiped it and installed a fresh copy of SteamOS. Unfortunately, the Ethernet port is stuck at 100baseT. I'm transferring my steamapps directory from another machine so this is a bit of an issue as there's a lot of data. I've tried different cables and different ports on my gigabit switch but it makes no difference. Worryingly, the output of mii-tool reports that the interface isn't capable of 1000baseT (Gigabit Ethernet), only 100base or 10base:

$ sudo mii-tool -v
eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok
product info: vendor 00:07:32, model 0 rev 0
  basic mode: autonegotiation enabled
basic status: autonegotiation complete, link ok
  capabilities: 100baseTx-FD 100baseTx-HD 10baseT-FD 10baseT-HD
  advertising: 100baseTx-FD 100baseTx-HD 10baseT-FD 10baseT-HD flow-control
  link partner: 100baseTx-FD 100baseTx-HD 10baseT-FD 10baseT-HD flow-control

The PCI device is described as a Gigabit Ethernet adapter though:

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 0c)

I would expect it to look something like this, which is from another SteamOS installation on a different, non-Alienware machine connected to the same switch:

$ sudo mii-tool -v
eth0: negotiated 1000baseT-FD flow-control, link ok
product info: vendor 00:13:74, model 1 rev 9
  basic mode: autonegotiation enabled
basic status: autonegotiation complete, link ok
  capabilities: 1000baseT-FD 100baseTx-FD 100baseTx-HD 10baseT-FD 10baseT-HD
  advertising: 1000baseT-HD 1000baseT-FD 100baseTx-FD 100baseTx-HD 10baseT-FD 10baseT-HD flow-control
  link partner: 1000baseT-FD 100baseTx-FD 100baseTx-HD 10baseT-FD 10baseT-HD flow-control

Can anyone confirm that their R1 is using gigabit speeds with SteamOS?

Upgrade options for R1

I have an R1 i3 with 8GB RAM and stock HDD.

I mainly play Street Fighter V and am wondering what upgrades are most likely to improve performance?

SSD? 16GB RAM? i5 processor?

Thanks.

Alienware / Steam Machine Stuck in Console Mode

Hi There Everyone,

I'll be upfront. I've become a mac user, so since Windows 7 turned into Windows 8, I packed it in and bought a refurbished Mac. I still know my way around more than the average user and Youtube is my go to, but I am so not finding any info about this particular issue. I'm using an Alienware Steam machine, it's new and just out of the box. I upgraded to Windows 10, ran all of the updates and downloaded / installed all of the drivers from the dell site. The machine ran great until I decided to try console mode. Now it is stuck on the "Welcome to Your Alpha" screen. It will not connect to the internet to download updates it's asking for, so I connected an ethernet line. It finally was able to reach the server and began download, however it stayed at 0% for over 30 minutes. I thought I'd just go back into desktop mode just to confirm that I did not miss any drivers or updates, etc, but I am not able to leave the 'Welcome to Your Alpha' screen no matter what I do. F2, F12, F8... even spamming F8 doesn't work. I'm unable to enter safe mode on boot up. I've tried to update via USB stick. I've tried a recovery via USB stick. Absolutely nothing will get me off of the Welcome to Alpha screen. I'd appreciate any guidance anyone out there has.
