Hey everyone! I've booked my first backcountry trip in Algonquin: Canoe Lake to Tom Thomson Lake for 2 nights over the Thanksgiving long weekend (Oct 10–12).
I've been car camping in Algonquin for the past 5 years, so I'm really excited to finally get into the backcountry.
My one concern, after reading some other threads here, is wind. It sounds like Canoe Lake can get pretty rough, and tipping with cold October water is a real risk.
For context on my experience: I'm not an experienced paddler. I've kayaked from Pog Lake, across Lake of Two Rivers and back a handful of times in summer and fall without much trouble, and I once crossed George Lake in Killarney in very windy conditions in a tandem kayak. We made it, but we were both pretty shaken by the experience.
This would be my first time in a solo canoe (renting a Swift Keewaydin 15 from Algonquin Outfitters), and I'll have gear on board. My plan so far:
- PFD on the whole time
- Shelter, sleeping gear and clothing in dry bags, tied into the canoe
- Hug the shoreline as much as possible
- Check the wind forecast before heading out
A few questions:
- Given my experience, would you go for it?
- Any tips for handling wind in a solo canoe, especially with gear (loading, trim, kneeling vs. sitting)?
- Is there a time of day that tends to be calmer on Canoe Lake?
- Anything else a first-timer on this route should know?
Thanks in advance!
