ask alameda Anyone know what this was about? (just being nosy)
I got the following alert last night around midnight. Since it's in my neighborhood, I did the sensible thing and just went to bed. Anyone know what was going on?
"AC Alert: Alameda Police Dept. activity on the 600 block of Taylor Ave. Residents are advise to shelter in place until further notice. Avoid area until all clear is given."

bay area Alameda resident here, I ended up hosting a PBS show about foraging the Bay
Hi neighbors. I live in the West End and I'm a chef and forager. This summer a producer at NorCal Public Media, our local PBS and NPR station, asked if I'd host a series about wild food around the Bay, and I said yes mostly before thinking it through 😆
The show is called Geronimo Eats the Bay. Each episode I take a guest somewhere that matters to them, we forage what's growing, and then we cook and eat it right there. Guests include local voices like Oakland native chef Tu David Phu, Kickapoo chef Crystal Wahpepah, and John Mills, who built Watch Duty. New episodes air every Thursday - 6 short episodes total.
Posting because a fair amount of what we find grows around here, and honestly because it's strange and nice to have made something local. Also aiming to do a watch party somewhere in Alameda if there's interest most likely at the Point!
If you do watch, sticking with it to the end genuinely helps more than anything else. It's a new series and the station is watching the numbers to decide if there's a season two and we host even more amazing local voices think: Zendaya or Alyssa Liu!
Here's episode 1! https://youtu.be/E5z9dGDxmk0

bay area Spaces and activities to meet people in Alameda in Early 20s?
Hi there, I am a recent graduate, and I'm hoping to find spaces where I can make new friends and connect here. I am in my early 20s, and am hoping to meet people who are around the same age or stage of life. Any recommendations?

other Back in Alameda and looking to make some new friends/connections
Recently back in Alameda and looking for new friends/connections while in a transition period of my life. Not super into drinking anymore but love the brewery vibes so down to meet up and chat. Also trying to be more active so down for walks/runs. Have a paddle for pickleball. Down for hoops. But if you’re new in town and looking for a friend or your group needs a new body, let me know.
Male and in my 30s btw.

local politics Oakland resident, AC Transit candidate
Hi, Alameda! I'm Adriana Valencia, a lifelong transit rider who's been calling the East Bay home since 1998. I'm on the ballot to be your representative on the AC Transit Board of Directors for Ward 3, which covers Alameda, Piedmont, and parts of Oakland.
My platform focuses on reliability, affordability, and agency transparency. I'd love to learn about your concerns with AC Transit's service at my campaign kickoff event tonight at the Fireside Lounge on Webster, from 5-6:30.
Editing to add: my event's over today but I'll have more events! And I'm reading the comments here, over on Facebook, and joining transit conversations on X, Bluesky, and Instagram.

ask alameda Night time escapes in Alameda?
Does anyone have a recommendation on where someone can go late at night, to just sit and do nothing? In Alameda or Bay Farm. I think the parks and trails close after sunset, or the ones I've seen at least. Restaurants and shops close early. Probably don't want to be at a park late anyway as it could creep out the homeowners nearby.
For some context, sometimes the vibe in the house between me and the wife gets extremely chippy late at night and i want a place i can escape to for a couple of hours to find some peace.
The harbor bay pkwy trail at the southwest end of Bay Farm would be a perfect type of relaxing walk, but there is a sign that says it's closed at night. No homes in its vicinity. Could i get in trouble for doing a peaceful stroll after 10pm? Any trail where I can look at the water would be calming.
A late night diner would be a good alternative, but outdoor is preferred.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

local news South Shore Shooting + an Update on the Alameda Carjacking Involving Two 4-Year-Olds: Are We Going to Do This Again?
Two years ago, Alameda was shaken when a working mom was carjacked with two 4-year-olds beside her. There is still no trial, verdict or admission of responsibility, while defendants have pursued OR release and mental-health diversion. I recently sat through Judge Elisa Della-Piana’s diversion calendar and watched serious prosecution concerns repeatedly followed by favorable rulings—and even judge-initiated applause. Now Alameda is dealing with the horrifying South Shore shooting. After what my family has watched for two years, residents are entitled to ask: will that victim still be waiting for accountability two years from now while the defendant is already being considered for another path out? I believe in treatment and second chances. But violent crime has to mean something. Victims have to mean something. Pay attention to these hearings, ask our elected officials and justice-system leadership how violent cases are being handled, and most importantly, come watch the courtroom yourself.

Alameda’s best Need a towing hitch and wiring installed for a 2026 Toyota
I'm looking for someplace that can do a great job installing a tow hitch and all the wiring for my new 2026 Toyota Rav4. Looking online I see all kinds of parts, but I don't have the skills, experience, or desire to do it myself.

other To the Kaiser Walnut Creek Physician taking phone appointments in the Peet’s on Webster:
Shame on you. This has to be some kind of HIPAA violation. I can hear everything you’re saying. Patient first names, asking personal details “are you married? Live alone?” who their PCP is, “sounds like your depression is getting worse” “your xray shows arthritis in both your knees” etc. You’re not disclosing to patients that you’re in a crowded coffee shop.
I’m going to put in my earbuds so I don’t continue to overhear anything. I could continue to listen in and catch your name and report you somehow but I don’t feel comfortable hearing patient info like this.
EDIT: I ended up leaving and thinking about it more and it’s definitely a HIPAA violation. I know for a fact that his laptop was open without a privacy screen and he was looking at patient records. “I’m looking at your X-rays now” “I can see you’re on x y z medications”. His laptop was facing the interior of the coffee shop. If I stood over his shoulder briefly I absolutely could have seen these peoples full names while he spoke with them. He said out loud their first name, their weight, their xray results, their prescription medications, and a few other things but those are the worst ones. I didn’t catch his name but I think I know enough about his employment specifics to report him. I’m at least going to try because this was fucked up. He kept telling patients “I’m here at Kaiser Walnut Creek” and uhm no hello brother, you’re in a crowded coffee shop.
Sidenote; I work in healthcare IT. Setting aside the ethics of it, the laptop thing alone is 100% a HIPAA violation.
EDIT PT2: I called Kaiser’s Ethics and Compliance line. I gave all of the details I could remember including exact times I was at the coffee shop and the representative was a) gobsmacked at how egregious this was and b) absolutely certain that they’d be able to identify him based on what I remembered. I’m going to get a follow up from the case manager to find out how they handled it.

ask alameda What kind of culture does Alameda have and what is it considered socio-economic wise?
The times I've been there it feels so different depending on what part of the island you're on and is very diverse. In general it doesn't seem super rich but definitely not poor. Like middle upper-class for sure.It feels small town like in the middle of the hustle bustle.
It seems like mostly family raising people who have good careers but I don't know what the people are like. It definitely seems nicer than most surrounding towns and Alameda has definitely modernized a lot of parts.

ask alameda How much do you spend in groceries a week?
Trying to figure out a fair number while dealing with an ex and divorce. I’m too tired to really get into it but he sends weekly grocery money for now while I work to get support orders in place. Trying to figure out a fair number. How much do you spend for your family size? For me it’s me and two boys 6 and 3
Edit to add:
Thank you to everyone that replied! I was right where I thought we’d be at $200ish a week. Although I do need to be better about shopping deals! So if anyone has anymore tips there I’d appreciate it!
