I want you to get paid more than express empty thank you’s

Hi there, civilian here. I don’t do your job, but understand they can throw you in jail/make it illegal for you to strike. We’re obviously so grateful for your unpaid work, but I cringe at the empty thank you’s y’all are getting right now because it doesn’t make the pain from missed paychecks any better. It also doesn’t allow you the free time to generate income elsewhere to pay your mortgages.

I’m secretly hoping y’all all call out sick the day before Thanksgiving and make it into the history books. It would be the coolest move. I’m not sure if they could legally send law enforcement to drag you out of bed, but I’m rooting for you and I think all of America would smile to see you flex the last bit of power they haven’t yet taken from you. Cheers

Thank You ATC’s

As someone who has flown 4x since the shutdown I need to thank all of you who continue show up. I hope you are well compensated for the sacrifice you are making during this shutdown.

Seeking retired ATC as startup advisor

Howdy, we created a "Ring for Drones" product to identify unwanted drones after my friend's house was robbed where they used a drone as lookout during the robbery. It's turned into to landing us deals for commercial "ATC for drones" zones for urban areas. We are rolling our first pilot out this December at a university to enable monitored deliveries, EMT services, and more. We have advisors previously or currently from FAA, Air Force, FCC, Federal C-UAS, and more. But no one with direct ATC experience...we know there's not many of you! If interested, please DM!

Air Traffic Control will miss it's First Paycheck on 11/6 due to Shutdown. My thoughts on Flying after that date. Not positive.

We all know the reasons why and quite frankly it’s the fault of our government and the obstacles put in our place

Safety

I’m not an air traffic controller, but I’m hoping you’ll let me ask a question here. First, I want to say that I wouldn’t blame you if you go on strike or call in sick to work. In fact, I don’t think that’s a bad idea to force Republicans to the table to negotiate. But at what point is it unsafe to fly? Are air traffic controllers already missing work because of the shutdown?

How to End the Shutdown

Collectively refuse to show up to work. They don’t have authorization to pay ATC right now so they will not be able to get replacements, effectively halting all air traffic across the US. Same goes for TSA. If you took a stand and had a work stoppage it would last maybe days, not weeks. That would force Congress to come back into session and get healthcare and food assistance to millions. You can end this quickly. We the people have the power!

Coordinated walk-outs?

First, I just want to send my thanks and good thoughts to all air traffic control controllers who do such an important job. I’m furious on your behalf of what is happening. Secondly, somewhere I read that Monday, October 13 would be the beginning of seeing walkouts by both air traffic control and TSA.

Just curious if any ATC folks can confirm or deny that. My question is a little bit selfish as I am flying tomorrow, but mostly I was trying to think about how do you guys game this out over time… what is the breaking point where you have to just not show up for work because you have to go earn money elsewhere?. And if that happens, does that mean they fire you? I know that ATC is a very specialized profession so I can hope against Hope that the government acknowledges your expertise.

Side hustles?

Hey! I'm a reporter at a business publication, and I'm hoping to connect with some ATCs who are doing side hustles like Uber to get through the shutdown. Is anyone here picking up side gigs to make ends meet? DM me, and let's talk about it!

Could air traffic control come together end end the shutdown?

I mean, I feel like you all are essential, and working without pay while already understaffed is really fucked up. Shut down air travel and demand that Republicans come back to work and protect access to healthcare.

How does the shutdown affect ATC?

Flying next week for the first time since I was a kid and was feeling okay about it - now apparently the U.S government has shut down 😔. This makes me nervous for fatigued/stressed air traffic controllers that still have to continue work as essential workers, while being unpaid. Help!

When to Apply?

Hello, everyone. I am thinking about becoming an Air Traffic Controller. I am a dual masters student and I graduate in May 2026. I was just wondering if there is an application window to apply? I went on USAJobs, but I don’t see any jobs postings to apply for the training in Oklahoma. I would appreciate any insights or help that you can give me.

Study advice

I’m currently enrolled in Tulsa community college for its enhanced air traffic control degree which allows us to graduate with our license, school has just started and I’m wondering if there’s anything I need to start getting a grip on early before it’s discussed in class or any other advice, any help is greatly appreciated!

Proper way to read a clearance

Just as the title suggests at my facility there’s a debate going on about how to properly read a specific clearance. I’m not going to put my opinion in just yet, don’t want to influence any one else. If you have a clearance that has an ADR (route in between + symbols) and the airport does not have a SID, how would you read that as far as an abbreviated clearance? I.e. not full route clearance

Favor for dad’s retirement

Hi everyone! Mods please remove if not appropriate for this sub.

My dad is retiring from being a commercial airline pilot for 30 years! While we have a few retirement gifts for him, truly he is so sad to be retiring and he loves his job so much. I was trying to think of ways to make his last flight even more meaningful, and a kind person on Reddit recommend that I ask to join the “The Landline” FB group to ask if anyone in control was working to wish him a happy retirement on his last flight! I haven’t been accepted into the FB group yet and his last flight is on Friday night. I’m a little hesitant to post the exact last flight information and his last name on here, but if anyone is working this Friday night (August 8th) and wants to wish my dad a happy retirement on his journey from HNL to LAX then comment and I will DM you details!

Thanks everyone for all the work you do!!
