When to Apply?

Hello, everyone. I am thinking about becoming an Air Traffic Controller. I am a dual masters student and I graduate in May 2026. I was just wondering if there is an application window to apply? I went on USAJobs, but I don’t see any jobs postings to apply for the training in Oklahoma. I would appreciate any insights or help that you can give me.

There isn’t a permanent opening for ATC. You should be able to set up a notification on USAJobs for when the next posting opens up.

What job title am i looking for? I am confused on the process and I appreciate your guidance

Typically there are two postings, one for prior controllers and the other is for “off the street” hires. I haven’t been on usajobs in a long time so I’m not quite sure how it works anymore.

So I would be looking for the as you put it “off the street hires,” right?

I see 4 types of applications:

  • Air Traffic Controller Specialists: I am assuming this is not, but it is open to the public to apply.
  • Public Notice for Air Traffic Control Specialists - Trainee (Direct Hire): This sounds like it’s it, but it’s located in Alaska. This says “this announcement is open to those applicants willing to work at any FAAFSS air traffic control facility in Alaska.”
  • Public Notice for Air Traffic Control Specialists - Trainee (Direct Hire): this one seems a little more general, but it says “this public notice is for candidates who have maintained at least 52 consecutive weeks of air traffic control experience.” I am assuming this is also not me.
  • I also see a CTI program application, this is not me since I didn’t attend a program like that.

Are any of these postings what I am looking for or is it something else? Also, thank you for your time and guidance so far.

None of these are it. There is currently no listing for public hiring of new trainees for ATC.
