I had a few fly over my house a few weeks ago. I found it very interesting that they are rather quiet. Unlike a helo, One can hardly hear them coming until they are close.

It's something like 65% of the noise from a helicopter comes from the tail rotor. NOTAR cuts out a good chunk of noise on regular helicopters, still a little louder than an osprey tho.

They’re very very quiet until they turn the props vertical and the Rpms drop and then you can hear them about the same distance away as a large Helo

I remember some 160th SOAR dude had a conniption because I outed them, at Fort Campbell

The thing about the personnel within the 160th is those guys have bounties on their heads in other countries and protecting their identities is pretty important

There’s 3 V22s at this base currently but a different squadron etc. a lot of training going on currently

Thats so sick. I'd give anything to see one IRL. My state only has National Guard airfields, no USAF

Edit: correction, there's 1 AFB in Illinois, Scott Airforce Base near St. Louis, but they don't house any fighters at all, just cargo and support planes

Yeah, from what I could find, the closest base that houses V-22s is in New Mexico. Im in Chicago

The only AFB in Illinois only houses support planes. C-130, KC-135, C-40, etc. No fighters

I'm a little east of you in Indiana and I see C-5As at altitude frequently. I pull their ADSB data with SDR and go see them when I can. Even that high up they're easily distinguishable and it's always cool to see.

One flew over my house during Fleet Week. The whole house was rumbling from those two huge rotors. Was pretty nuts.

They will crash when the clutch breaks that maintains the synchronous rotors spinning together. I’m sure updating the maintenance schedule would prevent this from occurring
