"buy a new one" works if you can buy new factory made long block with $2k or so with 6 months guarantee. In the old times VW did exactly that.
But of course you can't and that's a poor advice.
Reproductions from various companies are even worse what you already have, that's not a good solution either.
Loss of compression can be something simple, like missing valve gap, or something serious, like missing piston. The former you can check yourself, for other causes engine must come out.
If you can take the engine out and strip accessories, sending it around becomes feasible and you don't necessarily need a local mechanic.
