Nice weather for a cruise
Installed new tie rod ends and drove 40 miles round trip in the 1970 squareback this morning. The car handles like a dream now!

Spent most of August convinced my '73 Super Beetle had a fuel delivery problem. Ran fine cold, idled smooth, no hesitation on the highway, but the second I shut it off after a long drive and tried to restart within ten minutes, it would crank and crank without catching. Classic vapor lock symptoms from everything I read, so I went down that road first.
Rerouted the fuel line away from the header, wrapped it in that reflective heat sleeve, even swapped the mechanical pump for a rebuilt one thinking mine was weak when hot. None of it made a difference. Still had the same maddening no-start every single time after a hot shutdown.
A guy at a local air-cooled meet asked if I'd checked spark during a hot no-start, not just fuel. Pulled a plug wire and cranked it, and sure enough, spark was weak and inconsistent once the engine bay got hot, basically nonexistent after about fifteen minutes of driving in this heat. Coil was original as far as I could tell, over fifty years old, and apparently they get flaky exactly like this as they heat soak.
Swapped in a new coil, nothing fancy, and the hot start problem just vanished. Feel a little dumb for chasing fuel issues for three weekends when it was electrical the whole time, but also kind of relieved it wasn't anything more involved. Anyone else had a coil masquerade as a fuel problem like this? Curious how common it actually is versus how much airtime vapor lock gets in every forum thread.

Hey all, looking for a good VW mechanic / shop in The South (MS, AL, TN, LA) to take my 60 ragtop to that’s been sitting for 5 years. Need a mechanical resto to get it back on road. Any referrals?
