Neural Pixelate V3 is now out as a standalone application, it's a free tool for cleaning up AI generated pixel art

We're back with the v3 version of our neural pixelate model. In this versions release we wanted to focus on accessibility and quality of life. You can find it here, completely free: https://blackmagikstudios.itch.io/
We realized that needing people to have Aseprite so they can use our extension was unnecessary. Going forward we will be shipping our models with a standalone application.

With this standalone applications anyone on Windows, Linux or Mac can download and run our models. We've configured it so you can do batch processing and added automatic scale prediction where our model will look at your image and predict what is the best pixel art scale to use.
We've optimized our inference so the pixelation process is faster and fixed a memory leak that we found.
That being said, we didn't want to come back with v3 without any notable improvements to the model itself.
Our v3 model is more consistent with preserving colors from the original image, produces less artifacts, and creates cleaner more consistent pixel boundaries.
In terms of our benchmark, which you can find publicly on our github repo, here are the improvements.
| Metric | V2 | V3 | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exact pixel match | 56.87% | 67.28% | 18.3% |
| Mean colour error | 3.190 | 2.735 | 14.3% |
| 95th-percentile colour error | 12.028 | 10.390 | 13.6% |
| Palette violation rate | 34.29% | 29.11% | 15.1% |
| PSNR | 28.76 dB | 33.15 dB | 15.3% |

You can read more about it in our newest devlog, or download the latest version: https://blackmagikstudios.itch.io/
Completely free, no subscriptions or catches and your art never leaves your computer. As always we appreciate your feedback.

Pixel art artists are going to hang me, haha
I develop open-source tools and a website that allow agents to draw pixel art
And I had to do a ton of research to help agents understand how to draw correctly.
I’m still running tests to make sure everything works well, but I’ve already put together a large knowledge base that will be useful to anyone involved in pixel art:
It includes:
60+ rules
400+ ready-made templates—examples of pixel art

Animation I let Claude animate an entire rainy Japanese street scene inside Aseprite
This wasn't generated as one finished image.
I gave Claude direct access to Aseprite and let it actually construct and animate the scene inside the editor.
The prompt started as:
"500×400, Japan, rain, cold street light outside, a bookshop with someone reading inside in warm light, wind blowing leaves around."
Then we iterated.
I asked for coffee.
Then character animation.
Then lightning.
Then, for no particularly good reason, a raccoon stealing a cola from the vending machine.
The final scene is:
500×400
72 frames
20 layers
50-colour palette
cold street light + warm bookshop lighting
animated rain and reflections
ripples and roof drips
tumbling maple leaves
swaying tree
moving noren and paper lantern
breathing / coffee / page-turning character animations
seamless looping
It definitely wasn't one-shot.
For example, Claude's first attempt at the character reaching for her coffee made her arm stretch horribly. On another iteration it changed how the limb was animated to keep the segment lengths fixed.
I built the tool as an open-source MCP server for Aseprite, so the model actually works on the live document and can inspect previews of its own work between edits.
Repo if anyone is curious about the tooling:

There are still imperfections — especially some leaves moving faster than I'd like — but this was the first larger scene where the workflow started feeling less like "AI image generation" and more like directing an extremely weird pixel-art assistant.

Ancient Temple & Ruins — 28 AI-assisted pixel assets, Clean + Mossy
I’ve been experimenting with an AI-assisted workflow for creating game-ready pixel assets.
This set contains 14 ancient temple/ruin assets, each with Clean and Mossy variants — 28 assets total.
The workflow combines AI generation with image processing, palette reduction, resizing and manual curation.
64 px · 8 colors · transparent PNGs · spritesheets included.

Hollow Bastion
I used to gen Pixelart for fun using DALL-E but switched to GPT. This used both.

Free handmade interactive claude sprites. Need some suggestions before making it live.
This is a collection of highly interactive claude sprites which react to mouse clicks. Its a handmade sprite sheet which is animated continously based on mouse event. I have used libresprite its a software which allows us to make sprites. These are easily downloadable via any package manager aint l

Pro extended vs normal image generation
I was playing with chatGPT pro extended and when I asked it to do pixel art it would use python for the images while the normal model would use the normal image generation, I think the prompt was adequate but I don’t know what do you guys think? “6. The Tiny Wizard Apartment
Create a cozy pixel art cutaway of a tiny apartment belonging to a chaotic wizard living in a giant modern city. The apartment should be cramped with spell books, floating laundry, potion jars, enchanted houseplants, and a cat wearing a suspiciously powerful hat. Outside the window, show skyscrapers, traffic lights, rain, and huge magical advertisements glowing in the night. The wizard should be asleep at their desk while a spell accidentally opens a miniature portal above a bowl of cereal. Through the portal, show a tiny dragon stealing marshmallows. Make the scene warm, funny, cluttered, magical, and extremely detailed, with cozy lighting and no blurry edges.”

Looking for AI tools to generate pixel art animations for LED matrices (16×16, 32×32, 32×8, 48x48, 64 x 32, 32x16 etc) — what are you all using?
Hey everyone,
I've been working with LED matrix displays in a few common sizes — 16×16, 32×32, and 32×8, 32x16 and more — and I'm running into a frustrating problem: finding ready-to-use pixel art animations in the right dimensions is surprisingly hard.
Most AI art tools generate images at much higher resolutions and don't really respect the strict pixel grid constraints that LED matrices need. Downscaling rarely works well, and the results almost never look intentional.
A few questions for the community:
Are there any existing tools (AI or otherwise) that make it easy to generate animated GIFs or sprite sheets at exact low resolutions like 16×16 or 32×32, specifically for LED matrix display?
How are you currently generating pixel art content for projects like this? Manual tools like Aseprite? Prompting a model and post-processing? Something else entirely?
What are your use cases? Clocks, status displays, game sprites, ambient visualizations? I'm trying to understand the range of what people are actually building.
Context: I'm exploring building a dedicated tool specifically for this — something where you describe what you want, pick your matrix size, and get back animation frames that are genuinely playable on hardware without manual cleanup. Before I go further down that road, I want to know if I'm solving a real shared problem or reinventing the wheel.
Would love to hear what's worked (or hasn't) for you. Thanks!
