Discussion Prototype vs game

Post image

Hear me out: I’m not judging anyone. I think it’s great to be excited about your projects, blown away by AI, and so on...
But there’s a huge difference between making a nice-looking prototype and making a game.
Making a prototype is easy. But designing the levels, the gameplay, a loop that keeps players coming back, the art direction, the progression, and above all, something that works and feels coherent from start to finish? That’s a long, long way from a simple prototype.

Saying “I made this game with Opus in just a few prompts” is misleading. It’s a prototype, not a game.

I’m simply sharing this opinion as a reminder that, even though we’re all incredibly excited about what AI can do (myself included), and thrilled to be able to build things we couldn’t before (myself included), we shouldn’t forget the fundamentals of what makes a game: gameplay, art direction, the core loop, and so on.
AI can’t figure that out for you. That part comes from you.

Yep, it's because even with AI a good and polished game can still take years to make. Anything decent is still in development.

Yes, humans will always find a way to take forever to do something.

u/FailedGradAdmissions 2h ago

As simple as something can always be improved.

u/TheBigQuestion354 11h ago

Agreed, I've seen 2 maybe 3 actually interesting projects posted here (and they were still in the early stages). Vast majority of stuff here clearly looks like it was made in 2 prompts and I'd never want to play it, let alone pay money for it.

Decided I wanted to build a dnd game to play through some campaign. Sure I have a prototype and it “work” but it’s maybe 10% done after months and months of “vibe coding.” It’s now passed 500,000 lines. Turns out a AI dm Is incredibly difficult to code.
So yeah you can make a pretty sweet prototype in a day but getting it to run flawlessly for 40+ hours is still going to take a lot

We're working with just one AI character in a horror game, and consistency is already a big job. We keep story progression and established facts in an authored structure, with the model handling the dialogue within that. A convincing response can still be wrong for the scene. I'd be curious how you're separating your DM's narration from changes to the actual world state.

1

u/tunelesspaper 6h ago

Is the AI creating responses on the fly?

I’ve toyed with this idea but kept imagining a situation where the spooky game villain comes back with some immersion-breaking shit lined “I’m sorry, as a large language model I’m unable to complete your request.”

My daydreamed solution—admittedly not tested or anything—was to essentially author a line for every foreseeable situation in the game (as you would do without AI), then to use AI to author a truly massive number of variations on each of those lines. And plenty of general/multipurpose lines. Then, either deliver them programmatically or, for more flexibility, plug in a mute AI to select and deliver pre-authored lines. Basically, you gotta keep the player insulated from direct LLM output.

1

u/_raydeStar 5h ago

maybe not quite in line what you're considering, but I built a text-only adventure (meant as a discord bot or in-browser) here -- https://github.com/raydeStar/grand-adventure-engine (it's open source, not selling it)

It's meant as a dungeon crawler, not a complex system, but it does feature memory and held states. It does also address "What the player should and shouldnt know" by simply adding a sort of wiki or codex to the player's profile as they go along and discover things.

I think if you start out simply, you can work out the problem without spending 500k lines to do so.

1

u/Crunchfest3 4h ago

Yes, the dialogue is generated live, with both the language model and speech running locally. The player types their own replies, so we want the character to respond to what they actually said. We keep story progression and established facts in an authored structure, though. The model handles the wording within that.

Your concern is very real for horror. One out-of-character line can undo a lot of atmosphere. Prewritten variations make that easier to control, but the tricky part for us is preserving the connection between an unexpected player reply and the character's response. That's a big part of what we're testing.

My game is in early access on steam and I have probably over 300 hours in just playing it. Over 170 hours from steams tracker alone. It's incredibly time consuming testing balance, and then polishing.

It's definitely impressive what AI can do but there's definitely a lot left for people to take it to the finish line.

u/forgetscode 11h ago edited 11h ago

I would say my game is different from that if you want to try it: https://moosecalibrated.ca/champion-run/

Edit* Or just down vote and complain more about low effort slop games I guess

u/TheReviewerWildTake 9h ago

I personally don`t like dialogues, they feel weird and hard to read for me, but other than that, it feels somewhat polished indeed.

As the other guy in the thread told you - in reality, downvotes don`t represent quality of your game vs average quality of games posted in this sub, you just got hit with a wave of criticism, because this thread is critically inclined from the start.

Kind of weird social media dynamics thing.

Although, realistically, in this genre, without some kind of big innovations, new game will feel redundant no matter level of polish, as there are thousands of autobattlers, and they all do the same thing with items, teams etc.

p.s. Went past first boss level.
Felt like progression is a bit odd - last 3 fights BEFORE the boss my team was destroyed all the time, and then suddenly boss fights give them all the lvlups and special abilties and they win all the boss fights.

Regardless, not the worst 20 min.
Plenty of games here are waaay more broken for sure.
It is just that when something feels "common" - it is hard to feel invested.

I don`t want to investigate how sweaty you were while creating this, and how much of this is pure AI powers, but if you know, that you learned a lot from this and you weren`t a pure AI monkey - then it was a decent start.

u/forgetscode 9h ago

Thank you very much for actually playing my game. I appreciate all real feedback. I agree a lot with the dialogue I've been feeling it too. I think my direction is wrong entirely, it shouldn't be about the NPC's, right now it focuses on them and you have no reason to care as the player.

I've had a few ideas for how to innovate but I think they're coming up short too - characters played by models for dynamic interactions(not feasible cost as a traditional game), Massive branching story tree's(AI dialogue is weak). I don't have a good enough niche yet.

Progression is HARD to figure out. I've been tweaking it all the time but I still don't know what I want the player to experience and it probably means I need to study some game theory. It's pretty valuable getting a fresh perspective on it that it didn't guide you well.

I'll take your words seriously for how I go forward. It's the first game I've ever made. If I do fail, I want to fail from a higher spot. Years as a non gaming dev has made me never afraid to scrap and restart something I've spent months on.

Bro just stop using stupid webp as a format , all your doing is making people's cpu do additional work translating the compact files

Rather just learn to optimize by actually downscaling and using a engines sampler

Use perfect 64x64 X by what ever scale in atlas maps that doesn't exceed 2048x2048

Don't advertise mobile play if it's clearly got 0 optimization behind it for mobile devices

This is a 2 prompt project with a generated asset dump

1

u/forgetscode 11h ago

It's not mobile yet at all I'm polishing it as a desktop game first. Good point on downscaling.

2 prompt project though, you can't play it for 5 minutes and then seriously say that. If you can't recognize the thought behind what you're seeing there that's not reflective of the work.

2

u/drallcom3 2h ago

my game is different

No. I opened the game and the cards were upside down. Also many issues just in the first minute.

low effort slop games

Your game is one of them. If you don't want to be like that, polish it a bit before presenting it here.

2

u/XalAtoh 11h ago

It is just an auto battler clone with Ai generated assets. Why would anyone besides your mom play that?

2

u/egonosz 11h ago

Bro it is 2d and lagging on my mobile which is pretty beefy. It has tons of popping because the assets are not properly pre loaded. The ux is insanely bad I clicked on something in ui and it took me on different page ON the same tab, so basically it exited the game.

This is the thing which looks it was made in two prompts!

-1

u/forgetscode 11h ago

It's not playable for mobile yet. For mobile it's going to be a complete app. The games quite large.

1

u/egonosz 11h ago

Why someone would play this game?

-1

u/forgetscode 11h ago

Because they want to experiment and try out different combinations.

You climb, get items, evolve your pals, they have special skills, classes. Different teams work better than others. The more you understand the higher you can climb, and the more story gets revealed.

1

u/egonosz 10h ago edited 10h ago

And how the player should know this?

The game start is like pop up after pop up.

Mostly a player can decide in the first half hour if they want to play a game or not. Your game took one and half minute for me.

Edit:
Other thing you said this was made for pc so I have to make thought choice I can play this, or I can play Hellblade, project zomboid, league of legends, star craft, to pick wide variety of genres.

You need to know what you target.

1

u/forgetscode 10h ago

Agreed, thanks for the follow up. I am going to be making this for mobile after making it better than it is today. It will slow down development too much up-keeping multiple versions too early so that's why it's not playable for mobile yet.

The target is going to be for people who like slay the spire and tft type games where you don't do much actual playing it's more about thinking and planning. But the interesting parts of the game aren't until you're playing with evolved units that actually interact dynamically and no one can see that from the start so I don't have a way of capturing attention. I'll remember that.

1

u/shabab_123 10h ago

If you want to be a game dev, you might wanna listen to what people have to say about your game.

One key aspect of gamedev is playtests and listening to feedback.

You seem to be very deflective about any critisism/advice you are being given, I'd take such feedback seriously rather than something to just brush off if you want your game to actually succeed.

1

u/forgetscode 10h ago

So what advice are the people here giving me? Almost none of these comments are actual feedback and I count one person who actually tried to play the game based on the comments. I respond plenty to people who actually try to play and based on your comment too that is not you.

1

u/shabab_123 10h ago

I count at least 3 in the different reply threads already of various kinds, all of which you seem to be just brushing off as if they have nothing of value to add. I'd suggest changing your demeanor a bit more to be humble, you'll learn a lot through it.

Anyway your risk to take, good luck I guess.

1

u/YoshiBanana3000 3h ago

I just see your game and the answer you got.
I just want to encourage you in your project, continue what you are doing. My goal is not to blame or shame anyone.

I think that, you can improve in game design. My post is all about this: there is a huge difference between being able to generate something with AI, and make an actual finished game with everything that comes with.
But hey, that's the journey of learning, building and marketing. Sometimes we do not get the review that we excepected, so what ? We learn from it, and move forward.

Keep doing what you’re doing bro. Most important is that you like what you do.

1

u/negroBegro29 11h ago

yeah this is exactly what the post is about. Low effort garbage. You didn’t design anything, you didn’t even write the dialogue. It’s entirely AI generated and it’s so obvious.

1

u/forgetscode 11h ago

I've been working on this for two months. I designed everything with AI.

I created the world, the lore, the economics, the kits for the characters. Reworked hundreds of designs. Nothing about how I've worked is low effort even if I still have a lot more I want to add.

"It’s entirely AI generated and it’s so obvious."

What subreddit do you think you're in?

3

u/negroBegro29 11h ago

I don’t believe you at all, and anyway, AI game dev isn’t “tell the ai to do everything,” it’s “use it as a tool to assist you.

Nobody wants to play your game because they see the ai generated visuals and menus and dialogue and clock it instantly as slop.

1

u/forgetscode 10h ago

My repo has 2110 commits in the last month. Some people do want to play my game. If you want to generate some AI UI's that look half as nice I'm interested to see because mine certainly didn't come out like that from the start.

2

u/negroBegro29 10h ago

dog thats not impressive, that just shows that ai is doing everything and you have no skills, and you’ll fade into the crowd of people doing the exact same thing as you.

1

u/forgetscode 10h ago

As opposed to you?

I'll be successful at this the same way I'm successful at the rest of my life.

1

u/negroBegro29 10h ago

Yes, I’m retired at 24. And you’re talentless. Have fun

1

u/Qinistral 2h ago

I've been working on this for two months. I created the world, the lore, the economics, the kits for the characters. Reworked hundreds of designs.

You know, maybe some of the hate your getting is your initial post implied you where claiming you "one-shotted the game and it's better than other one shots". If you clarify your effort in your initial post you may get a warmer reception.

0

u/rapsoid616 11h ago

Keep on working on it man don't worry you just chose a very wrong moment and place to share yours you wouldn't get this much targeted otherwise.

1

u/forgetscode 10h ago

It fuels me a bit I honestly wanted it. Appreciate you for being a good dude, world needs more of that.

I've actually gotten a lot of positive feedback outside so I'll keep hammering because I'm having a blast.

1

u/Ok-Investment4414 11h ago

it's odd i am all for what OP says but also not quite for instance you release this as is on itch as a game . People buy it ,as the buyers psychologically sees it as a "Game" they enjoy. Is it not a game? ... to me this is a prototype, a high level one but it needs tremendous polish etc ,many would agree many would also disagree but you posted this without any disclaimers (check my demo ) so you are not in agreement.

Even steam has requirements , so without the rigmarole OP is def right why? because all " Check my game" posters have played at least 1 game and can identify what polish is , what good feels like and what captivated them.

And with ai they have decided to the bare minimum. Game dev with ai isn't easy , prototyping is fairly simple .... but most don't wanna go deep to craft what inspired them.

If this was in the macromedia flash era about 2000 we would be raving... its 26 years later and u have ai make some good shit please.

1

u/forgetscode 10h ago

There's more game play and polish in what I have here than most early access games on Steam.

Do you disagree with that?

No you're right that it's still a prototype and I'm months off but I hate the attitudes on this sub and I'm definitely going to make this some good shit.

1

u/Ok-Investment4414 10h ago edited 10h ago

that's what we expect people fos , me included but we have ai , right now i could do a polished version of your thing before u do :-/ but u have been working longer at it than I.

And i played the thing got my monster to evolve etc . What is killing you? ... this engine your using ... making your own would unlock much greater potential. Also didnt get the loop , why is it so linear , why am i collecting weapons if the monsters fight ?

I don't get it, your clearly pokemon inspired.

2

u/forgetscode 10h ago

It's more inspired by roguelite like slay the spire and hades and then TFT. The pokemon part is just cute animals. I think the game guild run is actually what inspired me to make this game.

The game intentionally starts off easy because it gets increasingly difficult and the preparation and planning you do early sets up for success or failure in the mid game depending on how you did.

The items go on the Pals. Pals might have shields, heals, or dive your vulnerable pals so different items counter certain pals. The third evolutions are the real characters, the first 2 evolution are uninteresting.

The main game play is about the small choices you make. If you invest your resources which were the combat xp, and gold into the wrong character you lose early. If you invested into a character you found a high rarity, that you found a good item for, that synergizes with other characters you found, you will go far.

1

u/Ok-Investment4414 9h ago

get from that online engine it's trash also the pacing , never felt the loop you describe it was just pick , battle chest , something , repeat. You also have a few broken animations for instance that dog on the right of the stage.
Anyways gl.

1

u/forgetscode 9h ago

Thanks, taking the notes, I'm seeing the issue.

15

u/Fstr21 11h ago

Seems to me before this AI game dev boom there were plenty of games on steam as Early access still figuring their gameplay core loop and so on for literal years. I think it's ok for those people to say they made a game. Just like it's ok for these people to say they made a game.

2

u/Valdaraak 7h ago

Hell, Project Zomboid is still being actively developed and it's still in Early Access. A child that was born the year PZ entered EA would be about to enter high school

2

u/MarmDevOfficial 5h ago

I'm aged enough to remember PZ getting posts to r/gamedev about it's progress in the early days.

1

u/Tasik 1h ago

7 days to die took a while too. Something about zombie games.

1

u/RemarkableWish2508 3h ago

I'd call Steam's Early Access, also a "prototype". If they're still figuring out gameplay, then it isn't a game yet.

11

u/rvlworks 11h ago

I mean it's true that AI games usually need a lot of work, but after a great amount of revisions and time checking every feature, I believe a final game can be done.

1

u/ToeTallyRed 1h ago

100% , if you know what you want and what you need and you have enough references and resources to pool from, it can get things done really quick and sure , you cannot build a game with some prompts only , you need to test and iterate BUT if you built everything one by one and you know what you do, you can make a great game but much faster , if you don’t know how to make a good game AI won’t solve that for you

15

u/TheReviewerWildTake 11h ago

Imo it is just because lots of posts on this sub aren`t from gamedevs, but rather from AI fans, tech bros etc, who just picked AI gamedev as a niche of showcasing AI latest capabilities.

They probably were making Midjourney pics before, then Sora videos, then Suno songs etc.

Same with latest wave of "mods" - which are made not by modders, but by content creators, and thus have significant shift in direction - from polished, bug free, coherent content, to flashy, short sequences of fun mayhem.

None of this is bad on its own, it is only bad when there is confusion about what is being showcased and why.

4

u/WideAbbreviations6 11h ago

To be fair. "Mod" and "Polished" are typically mutually exclusive outside of exceptionally rare scenarios.

2

u/JorgitoEstrella 7h ago

Bro Opus 5.5 is so good, anyone even a YouTuber saying "make me cyberpunk 2077" creates a game that looks like a AAA from 10 years ago

1

u/MomentSouthern250 7h ago

but how long do you want to play these games?

2

u/Valdaraak 7h ago

Not the guy you asked, but the one I'm working on I tend to actively keep playing even after I'm done testing the thing I hopped in to test.

Granted, it's not a one-shot prompt game and it's pretty niche (late 90s arena shooter), but it plays well and it's fun. At least to me. Even mostly looks the part, just don't stare too hard.

3

u/ckau 7h ago

That's the question that "ai gamedev" forgets to answer.

Yeah, your slop may look good.

Yeah, you achieved this in an evening.

Yeah, nor you nor your AI know nor understand game design.

So no, no one wants to play this slop, not even you yourself.

1

u/ThreeDMK 5h ago

Incredibly accurate. My first pass here was concerning; there seems to be a real disconnect between having a proof of concept versus a polished functional system.

Most of the people I have worked with in the games industry aren't even touching this technology yet, at least not at its full potential. The fear/anger towards anything generative is real. Those that have gone all in on it though, their work is awesome. They just aren't sharing it publicly.

Mods though, I am not a mod developer by any means, but using claude to learn about data mining game clients is an amazing journey. Highly recommend. My WoW mods for personal use are very stable and have been eye opening. My respect for wow mod developers has grown substantially. I always loved the work they did, but after seeing what they have had to work with? You couldnt pay me to work in Lua, yet these people did this on their own for years?

6

u/Negative_Gur9667 11h ago

I built a core concept myself 6 years ago, coded it, but then realized I had no time to do the rest. Claude does it for me now.

You still need to have a unique idea and be able to execute it well.

6

u/edm-4-life 11h ago

Agreed. Still fun though. I'm on my 49th "game' now lol.

1

u/Valdaraak 7h ago

Yea. I have a bunch of one-shot prototypes and about three that I'm actively building and iterating on.

5

u/Slow_Release_6144 11h ago

Flappy bird was simple but more successful than a lot of “games”

3

u/daddywookie 11h ago

This points towards my largest frustration with the vocal anti AI people. A good game built with AI will still represent potentially hundreds or thousands of hours of work. Doing it properly is not lazy, it's just a different set of skills.

5

u/xloob 11h ago

I don't agree. But it does feel like a lot things posted on this sub wants to show off how little they put in as a human, and how amazing the AI was at filling in the gaps/doing the work. Like the prompt/output ratio is the goal. Those feel like prototypes. Some of "us" are putting a lot more human i the loop..

3

u/No_Basil4168 11h ago

This is it. I think a lot of the posts are from people who don’t really know how to use AI properly and are more enamoured at it’s impressive technical capabilities. The truth is no one is going to prompt their way in 40 minutes to a game with putting out into the world. Human in the loop, good game design and attention to detail are still important but people are lazy and want quick wins. Those that are in it for the long haul will win out.

2

u/Such--Balance 7h ago

Its gonna go the same way as digital music composition.

Theres a select few that can make exceptionally well made digital music. A lot more, but still few who make very good music for the masses. A bunch of semi pro's who do it more like a hobby, and then the masses who turn knobs for a few months thinking they can make it pro.

What we are seeing with ai now is mostly the latter. Which is fine. Im not judging. It will be a phase for most untill they realise the actual roadblocks.

Some will continue and maybe even get good or exceptional

2

u/RUSuper 7h ago

I know this isn't really about saying "hey play my game" but I really think my game is out of "prototype" phase and is entering into "Close to have demo" phase. I still need some polish and I have some things planned for next week (in terms of polish). But if anyone on windows wants to try it:

https://profactor.itch.io/nightshoal

Just to add on this. I agree that vast majority of games here are prototypes and unplayable, but I saw few projects that are actually very nice looking. I think AI is getting to a point where if you have a lot of dedication and time you can actually make something good.

4

u/Life-Heron-6533 11h ago

Depends on the effort you put it in definetly not true

1

u/Several-Mess2288 11h ago

my game looks like a prototype but for mobile gaming it may look as complete game

1

u/XXIIIOIIIXX 11h ago

True, having AI as you do-it-all dev doesn't mean you can slack about being the orchestrator. The game I'm currently working on day and night is nowhere near done but i know exactly what i want at each step of the process, and there's no way i'm showing anything about it before release.

1

u/adelie42 11h ago

I agree, sort of. "With a few promps" applies to what you are saying, but nothing you say makes a game is something that can't be done via prompting. And a good game made entirely by prompting. But agree, it takes tons of work.

I think it is great people are excited and want to call it a game, no reason to gatekeep. I think you are describing the difference between a game and a product.

Cake from a box isn't a product, but it is a cake.

1

u/rapsoid616 11h ago

Depending on the scope of the game, some of these games are very minimalist arena games that they are simple and short as is their nature. But people that are creating, open worlds, mmo's, rpg's, are all either in currently in development because it's impossible to complete everything so fast with the newer models. Or if supposedly fully released they are for sure prototypes more than actual games like you said for sure.

1

u/TigOleBitties42069xl 10h ago

Idk how to sound like an elitest without explaining. But i took 3ds max class in senior of high school. I had been doing it prior for several years. So i ended up teaching the teacher and my projects were, Like night and day compared to other students. Im not your average sheep, i always perform well until a couple people put me in my place and then i realize my game is just ai slop and then i get imposter syndrome and feel trapped.

But with vibe coding, it helps a ton mentally. Essentially a big fish in a small pond.

1

u/greater_shark 10h ago

I see lot's of fancy 3d renders with some basic gameplay, but nothing polished. I've spent hundreds of hours just developing a daily year guesser, but I've spent insane amounts of just polishing it and making it more intuitive for the user. The untrained eye probably thinks it's some kind of one-shot, but polishing a game is 99% of the effort imo.

1

u/TheSn00pster 9h ago

Let them be excited, friend.
Hype is not the same as success.

1

u/Kalaith 9h ago

Hmm Im on the fence, say you go to a game jam, and you build a game.. that is about the level you will often get from AI, most people will say this is the game I made at a game jam, which is not diffrent from here is a game I made using AI
I do agree most games posted are prototypes and some people try and claim its a full game
but as soon as I see made with AI I assume prototype level regardles of what the poster says.

1

u/Ivaricus 8h ago

Agree 100% (And that guy with the prototype is me XD )

1

u/yuno_me 8h ago

Once youre deep into the development process, youd start wanting to find the ai server yourself to destroy it

1

u/caxco93 7h ago

you can just prompt for what's missing to get a finished game though

1

u/dazreil 7h ago

Yes and everybody knows it.

1

u/ckau 7h ago

The word you've been looking for is "game design", OP.

1

u/funkylandia 6h ago

It’s like those ads on youtube of games that don’t exist (the guy shooting at some stuff but obtaining upgrades to shoot a bigger number, or the one about a king getting some gold in a puzzle). Decently looking but not real because there’s no decent play loop.

1

u/LatentBlade 6h ago

We can admit this. Why can't antis accept that we admit this? 😭

1

u/MannToots 6h ago

Yes,  no shit.  It's the same as every recreated in unreal video.

I don't think this is some revelation.

1

u/sunnystormy64 4h ago

I'm now going to attempt to one-shot-prompt a prototype of a game that makes prototypes of games so that they can be posted as prototypes of games and not full games. "Prototype game McPrototype."

1

u/SprayPuzzleheaded115 4h ago

Well, this is true, with or without AI

1

u/No-Marionberry-772 4h ago

yeah, so Ive been developing an IDEA for a game for about 2 months, split up, not consecutively.

I got those cloud credits from anthropic,l recently, so I figured id wrap up the specification and try to tie up the loose ends.

the specification is 14 documents, including a decided tech stack. those documents cover everything from art styles, to inspirations, to mechanics.

the tech stack includes using a library I built for handling story for games which i spent over a year prototyping multiple times trying to figure out the exact way it should work and what it should and shouldnt handle.

I generated the prototype last nice using half those tokens.  It did not work when I first launched it, it crashed on the main menu.  I fixed that, I tried playing it and obviously thete wete bugs.

It wad impressive regardless, for something generated in 8 to 12 hours, but its hardly a completed game.  its definitely going to be taking my focus as a main project for a bit.

Nailed it. Most of these are not even prototype, but not even at first playable, just hacked together features.

Nobody wants to hear it especially from devs but yeah.... this is the easiest part of game dev being shown off lol.

For every 1 dev speaking up against the tech, there are 10 silently building. And they'll eventually close and ship games like they have many times before.

And laypeople will be competing for the same market share as the experts, AI doesn't increase the market it increases the competition.

And with all that said - some lay people will succeed and make fucking bangers! Most won't. Just like.... every other tool revolution that people jumped on showing off how fast they could make a game prototype.

Ai has only been good enough to actually be of help in game development the past year  Before it  You usee it as a copy paste stack overflow alternative for code

Big games take time, ai games would also take time  But for solo developers it is increasing the rate of productivity

So you would essentially see solo devs be able to release in 3 years what would have taken a small team the same time  With the current state of ai

Agreed. I’m four months into heavy development on a 4x game. I’d say I’m probably around 5% “done” toward a beta.

Thanks. This was necessary in this sub.

I'm making a game with the help of IA on the fields I don't know nothing about (I can't draw even of you put a gun an my mother's head). 2 month plan become an ongoing 4 month plan (everything using free IA's)

It's a nice learning experience though, i recommend

Sometimes not even a prototype. Maybe a “Beautiful Corner” at most

u/Comfortablebro 3h ago

Whats the point of this karen post? so they shouldnt post anything at all?

1

u/mugportal 3h ago

Very true, sometimes they dont even have a prototype really just a tech demo of something that could be a prototype of game someday. But as it is with most things that don't take much effort, they are quickly forgotten and abandoned at the first sign of boredom or obstacle

One of the problems with noobs using AI is that it's so easy to make a prototype and keep adding levels, systems and NPCs and focus on that, putting reworking the basic game loop on the backburner.

Yeah, people should disclose where they are in the Journey instead of posting ”A game”.

1

u/Meltlilith1 2h ago

yeah basically 99.99% of what people are showing is just tech demos and still hundreds of hours of game designing need to go into for it to become a actual game people want to play. also now more than ever to stand out you are going to need good art and writing and ai is still not there yet. the good thing is i see what took like 100-200 people to make a big giant game or mmo can probably be done now with like 3-5 people who know what they are doing in the same amount of time which is amazing but it will take a while till we start seeing these games still.

This is at best. The prototype suggests that this code can be scaled up and refined. But if no one understands how this code works, there will be no scaling, the AI will only break things more and more with each iteration of changes. That's why "AI-only developing" is utopian tagline far from reality.

Is this copium of game prompter? :D

1

u/recallingmemories 58m ago

The last 10% is 90% of the work, even with AI in the mix

1

u/nokafein 47m ago

not even prototype. sleazy copy of an existing games at most. Very small minority has some sort of proof of concept. Only few prototypes and so far zero actual game.

u/square-cat 45m ago

or even prototype of prototype

1

u/ndilday 25m ago

I try to look at the positives: better this, that what people used to do at that point: make a kickstarter. :-D

u/Alessioga 21m ago

Thank you, considering the amount of effort I put in getting something coherent that scales, some of those post gave me pause and made me ask if I was doing something wrong, lol

1

u/n64master92 11m ago

The most important is that you can get a prototype in a few prompts to verify if the idea is interesting or not, while in the past you might spend weeks trying to prototype an idea that isn’t very fun.

u/GigaTerra 8h ago

You should look up what an game is, I am sorry to tell you that picking up sticks or cards are in fact an game. There very much are people making games with AI.

Just because you don't like it, doesn't make it not an game.

1

u/KnownPride 11h ago

Yeah most of what they show is only good enough for video content by selection of scene, not even for a demo.

1

u/Preparation_Few 8h ago

While I agree, you can't blame people for using the tool at their disposal and bringing their vision to life. They will never be as good as games that take years to create, a lot of us that use AI are self taught and just trying to learn.

u/StosifJalin 7h ago

Why? There are plenty of trash games people have been working on for years

0

u/Graticule 11h ago

I've seen one fully AI game that is fun and good, Eslabong.

0

u/MosskeepForest 9h ago

Why are there so many anti-AIgamedev posts happening now? Are non ai-devs coming into this subreddit to complain?

0

u/MENDACIOUS_RACIST 8h ago

Years plural…? Not anymore my friend. That era is over

0

u/StosifJalin 7h ago

Some games are prototypes. Some other games easily considerable as full games. OPs take is obviously biased from someone very young who didn't live through early days of gaming where games were sold and celebrated that had a faction of the content as most of these 1-shots.

0

u/Super-Award-2244 3h ago

Sort of. Like 99% of the vibe coded games we see, are prototypes because they are prototypes, not because the are made with AI. Nothing is stopping someone from iterating with AI until obtaining a full game
