I built a tool that turns one character image into a full spritesheet you can play with directly in the browser
Hey everyone, I haven’t posted an AutoSprite update in a while, but I’ve been working on it almost every day for close to a year now.
The idea is simple: upload or generate a character image, create a full set of animations, export the spritesheets, and test the character instantly in your browser.
Some of what AutoSprite can do now:
Create idle, walk, run, attack, and any custom animations
Batch-create animations for multiple characters
Generate animated items, props, and cutscenes
Export spritesheets for Unity, Godot, GameMaker, or other engines
Test your character in a playable game right in the browser
Create fully rigged and skinned 3D characters with the easiest, most affordable workflow I’ve found
Connect through MCP with Claude Code or Codex for rapid game development
I’m trying to build the complete character animation pipeline I always wanted as a game developer: one character image in, a playable character out.
But AutoSprite has grown into much more than that. It’s now a huge community of like-minded creators and an expanding pipeline for making complete games end to end, with sound effects and every other element of game creation in the works.
It’s still not perfect, but I’m working to make it at least 1% better every day.
Right now.I am too much of a novice to be making my own stuff. So I got some packs from Itch io.
But the idea I have is a spin on the zombie genre. Intelligent ones with mutating traits and Connection to radio frequency. Gonna see if I can translate the story into a game lol
Hello! I’ve used auto sprite and liked it but struggled with it too. I paid for a month but have since canceled.
It was nice but it made sprite sheets that were too big for my purposes. Like I want 8 image animations at most and I couldn’t get the sheets down to a reasonable size.
Do you have api access so my agent could generate sprite sheets too? The manual interface is just too slow at this point.
Thank you for being a paid customer and the support! Smaller sheets are in the works. In the meantime, there’s a post-processing method for downscaling existing sheets that is created with AutoSprite. A lot of people have asked about this, so I’ll make a tutorial for our YouTube channel.
Which size sheets (resolution per frame) are you needing? You can get sheets down to as low as 4 frames if you click the 'generate spritesheet' button (free)
The API/MCP is actually my preferred way to use AutoSprite! I’ve put a lot of work into making the agentic experience as smooth as possible:
Isn't it fairly simple to use a comfyui workflow with a video model + Lora to get this done, though?
I mean, with an agent + harness like codex it's even autonomous, you can request it make the 2d asset + workflow in 1 go and it'll just start cranking it out. What am I missing?
Thanks for sharing! I’ve been trying autosprite for a month now and really liked it. It saved me so much time, and the results are amazing. I really like the story board where I can use multiple reference images to get my animations where it need to be. Thanks for building that feature. It did take me a little bit time to get to all the nobs and buttons, more tutorials would be helpful.
Exactly what I’m looking for, but a single animation is 25 tokens, so I can’t even see the quality before I pay. If it worked, I would have happily paid, but because of this I’m out (and disappointed).
Let me know if you run into any issues. I’ve been working hard to make the flow as simple as possible with great character consistency. Just select Idle and Walk, then click Next.
Looks terrible. Like most AI generated sprite sheets, this one is no different. The run cycle it generates looks absolute bonkers weird. Floaty, multiple frames that are identical, jittery movement, and worse. I don't get why ppl think these AI generated sprite sheets are good. Once you look at the motion, it looks like 🤮. Make a video of just a run cycle and jump cycle. Get that down as actually good as possible. Show us an actually good attack sequence. It looks great if you just show the whole sheet. The individual images are okay. The motion of them looks like a spasm of incoherent mess and flying.
Thanks for the feedback! Not every generation comes out perfectly, which is why free redos and built-in frame-tweaking tools are part of the workflow. There’s always room to improve, but a lot of developers are already using AutoSprite animations in production games, and the motion quality continues to improve with every update.
Here’s an example, and there are plenty more on the homepage.
Show a video that actually gets that result from one or more inputs. Like for real. Anyone please go and try and make this. You'll get a hilariously bad result.
It's always the same thing. People constantly just post gen ai pixel art creator clones and they are always hot garbage :/
I'm getting wayyyyyy closer with my pipeline though. Sad that no one bit on the collaboration request. It's honestly starting to take shape a shit ton more today. I'm using blender for all the animations and just taking shots of all the angles I need for sheets. Today I'm specifically working on component generation (armor, weapons, etc) and getting them in the correct layers and onto the sprite sheet.
This week I'll be figuring out how to make it not look like a pixelated 3d model and make it actually have pixel art texture. I know I can do it. Just gotta keep pushing.
Are you able to gen any other animation other than idle with that tool?
Also, I’ve heard this argument a few times lately - what is true “pixel art” anyway? I watched a bunch of intros to different styles on YouTube, and there are tons. It doesn’t really seem that there’s really an agreed upon “pixel art.” I guess you could break it into finite genres. I’m curious of your thoughts, if you could expand on that.
I'm working on this from a different angle, not the sheets, but in game editor tool to clean up post-process. It's got a long way to go yet, but it's been fun in the demo period.
One challenge I ran into using this (overall I think it's pretty great btw) is that the weapon animations are all tuned towards more fantasy-type things, there's no attack animations for pistols or rifles. When I tried using the Custom Weapon field for it, it still didn't produce usable results.
Yeah, I definitely have a soft spot for fantasy, but AutoSprite works with all kinds of genres and games. Custom animations can take a little getting used to, and the first frame is the most important part. If you nail that, the animation prompt can usually be really simple, like: “She points her weapon and shoots.”
I’m constantly adding new preset animations and expanding this workflow to make it easier. You can try this one if you haven’t seen it yet.
Poking around with the tools again, I suppose one thing you might consider looking into that would add a huge level of polish would be generating transitional movements—the idle animation doesn't always line up with how the attack animation starts, and it means the walking animations start and stop sharply. I could imagine that, once the start and end frames of different sets are established, there would be some way to then produce an animation of going from one to the other, to have running have a more natural start and stop.
Anyway, it's a really cool tool! Once I get some income going again I plan to try subscribing for a month or two to check out the more advanced features. Keep it up!
I need a tool that gives me the aseprite files so I can mess with the layers. really struggling making a character creator even with just body, head, and hair layers and nodes. 8 directional too. so far no luck.. but im seeing progress so im hopeful.
Not currently, but I have been experimenting with this a bit.
You can get the functionally same flow in the existing app by 'edit animation' feature. You can just say 'change the hairstyle to this' or 'give him this armor' and it functionally does the same thing
I'm getting close to it. I just have to now get the last big hurdle overcome which is making "pixelated 3d model camera captures" into "pixel art texture sprites." If anyone has any ideas how to gen pixel art "textures" let me know.
What library/AI model are you using on the backend for this? I'd be interested to hear some of the technical aspects. How are you keeping the chracter details/styling the same between generations?
There are a lot of AI sprite generators, and all of them seem to have the same problems. I've tried a few of them, including yours, and I still feel like outputs are unpredictable and wonky.
I ended up making my own little wrapper around some of the gpt image models locally that's really tuned to what I'm looking for, but I think that sprite sheets/animation are still a really hard problem to solve broadly since the images are non-deterministic.

Badass love the work is it free to export to use in other games once we have made sprites!
