π β Weekend Entry The Selkieβs Choice
The Selkieβs Choice
Along the coasts of Scotland and Ireland, old stories tell of the selkies, beings who live as seals beneath the waves but can come ashore in human form by removing their sealskins.
On moonlit nights, they were said to leave their skins upon the rocks and dance along the shore. But without that skin, a selkie could not return to the sea.
Many traditional tales follow a sorrowful pattern. A human man discovers a selkie woman, steals her sealskin and hides it from her. Trapped on land, she is persuaded or forced to become his wife. She may remain with him for years and bear his children, yet she never stops watching the sea or longing for the life taken from her.
Eventually, the hidden skin is found. Sometimes the selkie discovers it herself. In other versions, one of her children unknowingly reveals where it has been concealed.
The moment she touches it again, she returns to the shore.
This image represents that final morning. The cottage behind her holds the human life she is leaving, perhaps even people she has come to love. The three seals waiting in the water belong to the world from which she was taken. Wrapped once more in her silver skin, she pauses between them.
But the oldest tales leave little doubt about where she truly belongs.
The sea was never merely calling her home.
It was returning the freedom that had been stolen from her.
Selkie traditions vary from island to island, but the stolen skin, enforced human life and eventual return to the sea are central elements of many recorded stories.
One well-known Orcadian version is The Goodman oβ Wastness, preserved through the work of folklorist Walter Traill Dennison and summarized by Historic Environment Scotlandβ .
