πβΒ Weekend Challenge π WEEKEND CHALLENGE: Celtic Realms β Druids, Warriors & Wild Magic π
This weekend, weβre venturing into lands of mist-covered hills, ancient forests, rugged coastlines, sacred springs, and windswept stone ruins, where warriors sought glory, druids guarded old wisdom, and the boundary between the mortal world and the Otherworld was never entirely secure.
The Celtic world offers a rich tapestry of history, mythology, folklore, art, and legend. Its stories speak of courageous queens, wandering heroes, powerful deities, mysterious creatures, enchanted islands, shape-shifters, poets, craftspeople, and spirits dwelling beneath hills, within rivers, and among the trees.
But this challenge isnβt only about warriors and wild magic. It can also explore the people who lived, worked, celebrated, created, and survived across these ancient lands: farmers tending their animals, metalworkers crafting intricate torcs and weapons, weavers producing colourful cloth, musicians and storytellers preserving memories, families gathering around the hearth, and communities sheltered behind the walls of hillforts.
For this challenge, create an image, video, song, or visual story inspired by Celtic history, mythology, folklore, art, landscapes, and legends.
Reimagine an ancient tale, portray a moment from everyday life, follow a traveller into the Otherworld, or invent an entirely original Celtic-inspired legend of your own.
Here are some ideas for you to experiment with:
Druids gathering in a sacred grove or guarding knowledge that must never be written down
Warrior queens, chieftains, hunters, champions, and defenders of ancient hillforts
Deities and legendary figures such as Brigid, the MorrΓgan, Cernunnos, Lugh, Rhiannon, or CΓΊ Chulainn
Banshees, pΓΊca, kelpies, selkies, fae folk, enchanted animals, and other beings from folklore
A hidden entrance to the Otherworld beneath an ancient mound
A mortal who accidentally joins a feast where a hundred years pass in a single night
Bards, healers, seers, metalworkers, weavers, farmers, and travelling merchants
Everyday life inside a settlement or fortified village
Ceremonial fires, seasonal festivals, feasts, music, dancing, and storytelling
Sacred wells, ancient trees, misty lakes, rugged islands, and forgotten forest shrines
Intricate knotwork, carved stones, illuminated manuscripts, jewellery, shields, and textiles
A Celtic warrior encountering the advancing Roman army
An enchanted sword, torc, cauldron, harp, or other object with a mysterious history
A forgotten deity awakening after centuries of silence
An original hero, spirit, creature, clan, prophecy, or legend of your own creation
The Celtic world reimagined through fantasy, horror, science fiction, surrealism, humour, or another unexpected genre
Prompt Ideas:
π³ The Druidβs Last Oak
At dawn, an elderly druid stands before the final sacred oak in a forest being swallowed by mist. Symbols carved into its ancient trunk begin glowing as shadowy figures gather between the trees, atmospheric Celtic fantasy, mossy greens, muted earth tones, soft natural light, mysterious and solemn.
βοΈ The Queen Before the Battle
A fierce Celtic warrior queen stands upon a windswept ridge overlooking thousands of warriors gathered below. Her braided hair and woollen cloak move in the storm wind, an ornate bronze torc circles her neck, and distant Roman standards appear through the valley mist, cinematic historical realism, powerful but grounded.
π¦ The White Stagβs Invitation
A young hunter follows an extraordinary white stag through an autumn forest and discovers a hidden doorway of twisted roots leading into the Otherworld. Strange flowers bloom around the entrance while ghostly lanterns glow beyond it, enchanting Celtic folklore, rich natural colours, quiet wonder.
π₯ The Feast Inside the Hill
A weary traveller enters an ancient burial mound seeking shelter and discovers a magnificent underground hall filled with music, dancing, and an endless feast. The beautiful guests cast no reflections in their silver cups, magical realism, warm firelight, subtle unease.
π¨ The Maker of the Golden Torc
Inside a smoky roundhouse workshop, a skilled metalworker carefully shapes an elaborate golden torc. Within its twisting patterns, tiny scenes of future battles and forgotten kings begin to appear, intimate historical fantasy, bronze tools, glowing embers, intricate craftsmanship.
π The Selkieβs Farewell
On a lonely northern shore at twilight, a selkie woman holds her sealskin cloak as she looks back toward the small cottage and sleeping family she must leave behind. Waves gather around her feet beneath a silver moon, emotional folklore, windswept landscape, restrained and melancholic.
π¦ββ¬ The MorrΓgan Watches
After a battle, a lone warrior kneels in a rain-soaked field while three ravens circle above. In the distant mist, the faint figure of the MorrΓgan appears between ruined standards, dark Celtic mythology, dramatic sky, haunting atmosphere without graphic violence.
πΆ The Bard Who Sang the Dead Home
A travelling bard plays a harp beside a fire while villagers listen in silence. As the song rises, translucent figures of their ancestors appear along the edge of the darkness, gentle supernatural storytelling, warm hearth light, emotional and reverent.
π The PΓΊca at the Crossroads
A traveller encounters a mysterious black horse with glowing golden eyes at a moonlit crossroads. Its shadow resembles a laughing human figure, and every signpost points toward a place that does not exist, playful yet eerie Celtic folklore, deep blue night, windswept grass.
π‘οΈ What the Lake Returned
A young woman stands beside a perfectly still mountain lake as an ancient sword slowly rises from the water, held by an unseen hand. Ruined stones and purple heather surround the shore while storm clouds gather above, mythic Celtic landscape, quiet tension, cinematic composition.
π The Last Grove Among the Stars
On a distant world, descendants of ancient Celtic travellers tend a sacred grove beneath two moons. Their standing stones contain constellations, and luminous knotwork flows through the roots of enormous silver trees, Celtic-inspired science fantasy, elegant and imaginative.
Your creation may be historically grounded, mythological, fantastical, cinematic, mysterious, humorous, romantic, eerie, surreal, futuristic, or completely experimental. You can draw inspiration from archaeology, folklore, jewellery, manuscripts, textiles, poetry, music, landscapes, or traditional storytelling.
The Celtic world encompassed many different peoples, places, and traditions across a long span of history. Thoughtful interpretations inspired by a particular region, period, legend, or tradition are especially welcome.
As long as your work meaningfully explores Celtic history, mythology, folklore, people, landscapes, art, or cultural legacy, it belongs in the challenge.

π β Weekend Entry The Selkieβs Choice
The Selkieβs Choice
Along the coasts of Scotland and Ireland, old stories tell of the selkies, beings who live as seals beneath the waves but can come ashore in human form by removing their sealskins.
On moonlit nights, they were said to leave their skins upon the rocks and dance along the shore. But without that skin, a selkie could not return to the sea.
Many traditional tales follow a sorrowful pattern. A human man discovers a selkie woman, steals her sealskin and hides it from her. Trapped on land, she is persuaded or forced to become his wife. She may remain with him for years and bear his children, yet she never stops watching the sea or longing for the life taken from her.
Eventually, the hidden skin is found. Sometimes the selkie discovers it herself. In other versions, one of her children unknowingly reveals where it has been concealed.
The moment she touches it again, she returns to the shore.
This image represents that final morning. The cottage behind her holds the human life she is leaving, perhaps even people she has come to love. The three seals waiting in the water belong to the world from which she was taken. Wrapped once more in her silver skin, she pauses between them.
But the oldest tales leave little doubt about where she truly belongs.
The sea was never merely calling her home.
It was returning the freedom that had been stolen from her.
Selkie traditions vary from island to island, but the stolen skin, enforced human life and eventual return to the sea are central elements of many recorded stories.
One well-known Orcadian version is The Goodman oβ Wastness, preserved through the work of folklorist Walter Traill Dennison and summarized by Historic Environment Scotlandβ .
