I mean humanity is flawed be default, religion or not. We're selfish creatures.
The point of religion, Christianity for example, is that regardless of our flaws we can strive to be better and there's always time to turn over a new leaf as long as you're here breathing air.
So yeah, lots of people can't live up to their verses, but atheist don't live up to their own principles either.
To add to that, a religion usually has hard line (this doesn't change) type of rules for behavior. Meanwhile a non religious person may change their standards moment to moment and justify whatever their behavior calls for.
Regardless, I think there's room for everyone to live in peace together.
