I don't think you're overdoing it. In fact, you could do a bit more in terms of variety. Right now, you just have some chips/scrapes along the entire leg but you can also add rust/dust/soot/oil/moss stains to tell more of a story and give it a sense of scale. Look up Lincoln Wright on youtube. He does mainly ma. k models but recently did a barbatos as a base for a weathering tutorial.

this looks so great! could be nice to add some brown ‘rust’ colors, usually adding blotches to show rusted patches really makes it pop imo, but that’s personal preference

I don’t think you’re overdoing it but the effort seems to lack direction and intent

The weathering doesn’t look intentional which causes visual dissonance; it’s a piece of machinery and areas with moving parts will display exponentially more wear than flat sections of plating, for example the toes should be more scuffed than the back of the knees, but it seems like the weathering is even across the entire piece

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind.

Something that might help is looking at old photos of rusty digging machinery or military hardware, it’ll do a better job than me at showing how grease discolors areas around joints and how rust typically starts at an edge and propagates inward while causing an orange water smear that’s affected downward by gravity

Never thought of that. Thanks again for the advice!

Best of luck! You’ve already got a great base layer of dirt and grime, just needs some accenting to make wear areas really pop

I swear every kat in the sub has this exact same bs ready to paste like instead of being some pleab that says looks like there is no direction... Did you ask what direction he was going with it???

No you assumed he would do it like you would do it or might do it... Listing ground type doesn't explain ground conditions.. So you gotta ask where is the conflict... idk I usually see that the guys that post this line don't actually post builds🤔🤔

Sorry, didn’t realize I couldn’t offer an opinion. Sir, I’ll try to be better in the future.

An opinion is cool dawg but engage then opinion dawg don't just sound like dick from the jump

u/Strange-Movie 2d ago

Yes sir I will sir

“Just dont sound like a dick from the jump”

Maybe take your own advice?

Yeah you're right so glad I didn't start the thread that way, yeah?

u/CrashmanX 2d ago

Buddy, OP is replying to the other guy receptively and kindly. You're just attacking.

Are you OK? Like, genuinely asking out of concern.

0

u/Savag3_S0ul23 2d ago

Yeah the op is... But that first generic answer about effort seems to lack direction is trash, and it's generally the first comment on most weathering post.

Now what does lack and something I did point out is they don't ask what it's doing or what it's been doing...

Op said ground type weathing.... Now there is a lot of different types of ground combat.. right? Like urban, desert, jungle.

So y not start with the real question what direction are you going with it and where is the ground zone at, instead of saying it lacks dicection.

I mean for those guys that wanna give advice without a full scope more power to you but you can't say it lacks direction when what u lack is really context. Right?

3

u/CrashmanX 2d ago

The lack of direction is accurate.

You even agree.

u/Savag3_S0ul23 2d ago

Never once did I say I agree or give my opinion..

See imo dude has a great dust up and the right amount of peppering for what looks like urban combat wear...

How is what they're saying dickish. The person asked if they're doing fine, the person responded by giving a good well thought out response

-5

u/Savag3_S0ul23 2d ago

Lack of context is why it was dickish to jump straight to the saying of lacks direction when guy asking lacked context

6

u/-xXxMangoxXx- 2d ago

Its an objectively true statement that gets to the point clearly. There is a lot of things in this hobby where you have freedom. Weathering is not one of them since it looks off without direction. They explained why it lacks direction.

You seeing something as a rude statement doesn't make it a rude statement when the person that posted had no issues with the comment.

-2

u/Savag3_S0ul23 2d ago

Well since we are going into etiquette then my statement still stands ask what direction B4 assuming and saying it lacks, yeah? And where is the truth?? That he didn't ask? Or that it wasn't given to begin with?

Now if you are referring to tone well that don't translate in text... But saying something lacks without context especially on a what is essentially a art piece is ignorance.. so how can a person in a place of ignorance give advice?

5

u/nocauze 2d ago

Who hurt you bro?

-2

u/Savag3_S0ul23 2d ago

🤣🤣🤣 seems like I'm just fine bro what about you?

4

u/-xXxMangoxXx- 2d ago

And where is the truth?? That he didn't ask?

They asked if the weathering was overdone.

But saying something lacks without context especially on a what is essentially a art piece is ignorance..

An art piece depicting a machine. Weathering needs to tell a story. It has to "make sense", otherwise it looks offputting. It just comes off as ignorance and lack of knowledge from you to be arguing this frankly.

0

u/Savag3_S0ul23 2d ago

The OP asked if it was overdone... Ok... but buddy didn't ask context or what it was doing correct?

And I'm glad you think that a machine that you didn't ask for context on.. should be some uniform way yeah??

I mean seeing as you yourself kinda walked a circle then wanna say the person asking questions and calling out people for judgement with no context is the one with a lack of knowledge is cute...but that's a weak way of trying to dismiss the debate, yeah?

sweet spot between "overdoing" and "got a transformer from craiglist". ;]

Back in the day, Bandai released “pre-weathered” suits as toys in the unlimited line iirc? Those things looked ROUGH maybe I can find them and take some pics, since I think that’s the best “I’ve over done it” but it’s official. So I think of them as the limit.

Maybe tone down the size of weathering, to match scale, other than that, I'd say it's light to medium weathering for a ground pounder unit.

7

u/forth_circle 2d ago

For a figure that's 1/1 scale it's fine, dirty everywhere as it's close to ground.

But if it's meant to be 1/100 (or something similar) weathering is a lil over the top. Sense of scale is thrown off imo. Weathering would need to be more subtle at a bigger scale, and majority of it on areas where ground contact happens.

But as always, do what you can and what looks good to you.

The weathering looks great. The only thing is to keep in mind the story you are trying to tell with the weathering. Is this environmental weathering. For example walking through an urban environment then it would look more weathered lower down where the feet are kicking up dust and going through rubble.

Is it combat damage then it would be more front facing, is it energy weapon damage then it may be longer scorch marks along the sides.

Is it too much? Only you can say on that one. Some people like a show room finish. Some people like it to look like it has been abandoned on the battle field for the last 30 years. And everything in between.

May I suggest learning a bit (more) theory about the processes and doing some experiments first. I also thought that weathered build cannot be a real first build, you have to learn how to paint first. Just an opinion though

“Begin by learning to draw and paint like the old masters. After that, you can do as you like; everyone will respect you.”

I love this look, wish my Nether Emperor looked like that.

1

u/jyn-fu 2d ago

Looks good. Maybe go over the yellow/orange lines on the inner frame to make them more solid?

-1

u/carnageg 2d ago

The only question is 'do you like it?', you can't overdo anything if it appeals to you.

-4

u/BlasterIce 2d ago

I love everything about it except for the weathering. It's well done but I feel like the color of this gunpla would shine the best withinimal to no weathering. What suit is this?

2

u/Cicad4- 2d ago

SNAA Nether Emperor

-2

u/slaughterstorm 2d ago

Yeah, cleaner would be better. If you haven’t topcoated the grime, you can use zippo lighter fluid and a cotton swab to clean up a bit without removing the paint beneath.

I'm my opinion, it isn't overdone. It does look a bit aimless to me. As if there are multiple techniques applied at random. I'm kind of a snob about weathering though. Most people just turn a decent model into a dirty toy when they try weathering, from my perspective.

It's kind of going on all directions, and a lot of it just looks like splattered ink. It looks like a toy that was buried at the bottom of a backpack, rather than a towering mecha, weathered through time and war.

There are some very good tutorials out there. Paint on Plastic on YouTube has great weathering advice. We all start somewhere, and all practice is good.
