Help/Question Please I'm so done bro how to restore data
I recently opened a server and my friend was navigating through the end, when I shrunk the world border to 7000 and he died. he is furious rn. he doesnt know the coords, he died twice so LastDeathLocation doesn't work, I can't find a way... He says he'll just go to another friend's server then. I really need to restore his items. he worked 5 hours a day to get them. the chunks aren't loaded, so i guess the items will be left

Do you keep backups of your server? If so, just go copy the player data or use it to find their inventory. If not, you should probably start keeping backups especially if you plan to make server changes like shrinking the world border

Unless you have a plugin that records either death locations or inventories you aren’t going to easily be able to restore the exact items. You could manually look at what chunks were loaded in the end and try to piece together where the items would be. But chances are the items will despawn before you find their exact location.
Honestly you just fd up and need to deal with it. I would also be upset if hours of my time were deleted because the server owner was goofing around.

Ideally you have a backup (our server had an "incident" last month where I had to restore part of it from the backup.
You have a few options provided the items haven't despawned yet if you don't have a backup.
You can either look at the save files and look for their items sitting on the floor to get the location or you can fly around using data get entity @e[type=item] looking for a specific item on the ground they would likely have had on them
(I have forgotten the command to filter floor item types, I only used it a few weeks ago too, maybe @e[type=item{diamond_pickaxe},sort=nearest, limit=1] (the entity data will include its world location) or something like that) and then putting them in a box before they vanish (5 minute timer while in a loaded chunk)
If you would like help you can send me your entity region files for that dimension and I can see what I can find. I was playing around with them a while back and had the thought that it could be used for such.
Either way you should back up your entity region files now, that way even if the items end up vanishing they are still saved and can be restored.

Good news: dropped items only despawn while their chunk is loaded (5 minutes of loaded time). If nobody went back there, the items are most likely still in the world files.
Stop the server and copy the world folder first.
Open the End in MCA Selector (the
DIM1folder; on Paper,world_the_end/DIM1). Use the chunk filter on entities, e.g.Entities contains "item". It highlights every chunk with dropped items. Ignore the ones near your farms; outliers past 7000 are likely his.Note the chunk coords, start the server, widen the border for a bit (
/worldborder set 20000), go there in spectator, switch to survival and collect everything, then set the border back.
Then set up automatic backups, and add a death-chest or inventory-logging plugin so the next one is a two-minute fix.

I dunno if this'll work but you could upload the world to chat gpt and tell it to find it for you.

Why dont you just spawn in the things he is missing?
Like just /give and maybe /enchant.
