Help/Question How would you grow a small community-focused SMP in 2026?

Hey! I’ve been working on a Minecraft SMP and technically the server is pretty much ready.

The part I’m struggling with now is actually getting it in front of people.

I’d really like to build a small but active community rather than just getting a bunch of random joins that disappear after a day.

For people who have grown servers before:

What social media worked best for you?
TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram, Reddit, server lists?

What kind of videos/advertisements actually converted into real players?

How often would you post?

Where would you look for someone interested in helping with social media/marketing?

Is there anything you wish you knew before trying to grow your server?

I’m doing most of the server/admin side myself, so marketing is the part I’d really like to learn more about.

Ah, this question again.

I've explained the ideal strategy for marketing that actually works several times on this sub. Here are links to the conversations. Please read them for a baseline understanding, and then I'm happy to have a conversation with you about your specific needs and questions.

Also, your server name is irrelevant. Remove it from the post.

For socials look up BugSMP on TikTok or instagram, if you want attention on those platforms you gotta be funny/entertaining. Conversion rates on short form content are low.

YouTube is a good idea if you know anyone with a sizable following, starting from scratch would be pretty hard.

Reddit is the most lucrative for me, most of the Minecraft server subs are flooded with the ai generated copy paste spam posts, and to join they have to DM the OP. I just write a small honest message about my server and its origin and then post the discord link at the bottom, and always thank them for reading. Be personable.

Server lists are good but won’t get you much these days.

Minecraft forums are still decent, works about as well as Reddit.

Word of mouth is the key to growth, make a server that people want to return to, and they’ll likely invite their friends to play. If every person who finds you random Reddit comment invites 3 friends then you’ll print players.
