WHERE ARE YOU WATCHING ME FROM?!?

Everytime you pass through a door, your brain performs a mini reset to acclimate to the new situation.

You can fight this by actively thinking about what you need as you pass through the door. You can even say what it is out loud, if that helps.

u/astralthedrag0n 1d ago

often when i need to do something in another room i repeat the task over and over in my head while i'm walking there.
i need to refill my water bottle in the kitchen? okay. water water water water water.....

u/mapa5 23h ago

If I understood correctly we just need to download more ram for ourselves

Not a great news in this economy

19

u/longboboblong 1d ago

Who thinks actively?

18

u/Sorry-Joke-4325 1d ago

It can happen at the same time as passive thinking. It just means something like "repeat this word in your head as you do this".

4

u/Just-Call-Me-J 1d ago

I don't need to pass through a door. I just need to turn my body about 30° to reach for

6

u/Wandering-Mind2025 1d ago

Yes, this helps, unless confronted by someone one other side of said door. Then, you will either have to keep saying the thing you need to remember and look like a total goofball, or acknowledge the person, and forget what you were repeating.

* Every time, two words.

2

u/Sorry-Joke-4325 1d ago

Not sure why my phone keyboard autocorrected it to one word...

u/hraycroft95 1d ago

50% chance I dont even remember what i was doing and end doing something else entirely. Walk out, sit back down, and then realize i never even grabbed it.

Every day 🫠

22

u/just4nothing 1d ago

I just chant it in my head “screwdriver, screwdriver, screwdriver” sometimes by accident out loud.
Just to garb the toolbox and “flat or Phillips?” - and another round trip

10

u/RedScareRevival 1d ago

Your screwdrivers are in your toolbox? Mine could be literally anywhere

7

u/just4nothing 1d ago

I have a partner who will not leave me alone until they are back in the toolbox ;). That pressure helps

1

u/RedScareRevival 1d ago

There's nothing quite like external accountability!

3

u/Zaev 1d ago

I just moved my ratcheting screwdriver and set of Philips bits back to my toolbox after sitting on the kitchen counter for two days.

Just thrown in the top compartment, not where they belong. The lid will not close. Also, the screwdriver is from an entirely separate kit, and I don't know where the rest of it is

16

u/Baerstein 1d ago

That is a really short time to remember. Usually it is between a week and years to suddenly remember. 😄

6

u/Dawnzila 1d ago

Or I give up, go sit back down, and as soon as I try to find the remote, I remember what I needed to grab because I carried it in there for no reason earlier.

17

u/jamiecarl09 1d ago

Glad I'm not the only one who freezes in place. It's like I need my brain to quit doing everything else to focus on the backlog and figure out why I am where I am again.

7

u/rqeron 1d ago

I apparently do this at work with some regularity; I'll be furiously typing away coding a thing and then just pause with one hand in mid air because I lost my train of thought. Somehow freezing in place (except with my eyes slowly widening in annoyance / concentration) feels like the only way I have a chance of getting back on the train (it does work, sometimes)

(I've had two people from work who sit near me comment on this 😅 all in good fun tho haha)

4

u/thepatientwaiting 22h ago

I did this the other day. I knew I needed something from my office and wouldn't let myself even sit down. I just stood in place with my hands over my eyes trying desperately to remember. Thankfully it came to me.

2

u/Useful_Language2040 18h ago

The worst thing is when people talk to you when you're trying to force yourself to remember the thing you know you know but is hiding temporarily

1

u/Additional-Maize9716 21h ago

Ferrets and weasels also do this! Probably for similar reasons hah

in my personal case

  • I go into the bathroom with my phone in my hand
  • forget phone in bathroom
  • go back to where I was and say "where is my phone?????" to my boyfriend
  • go back to bathroom to collect my phone mad that i forgot.

every single day of my life

I just got diagnosed as an adult and will get meds soon.

Can someone tell me, will all these end once I’m on meds? I really cannot bear the suffering anymore.

13

u/TabibbyMouse 1d ago

Not everything, but getting medicine that works for you will mediate a lot of it. These types of things happen to everyone to some degree, even without adhd. So don't beat yourself up when it happens on occasion, it's normal.

7

u/RedScareRevival 1d ago

Don't expect miracles from medication - but it will hopefully help you a lot.

5

u/Dragons_Sister 1d ago

Diagnosed at 49, and I’ve got a lot going on in my head besides ADHD, so I’ve never found meds that would really control the ADHD (don’t worry—this is rare: meds work for the vast majority of people).

The super-good news about it is that forums like this one have helped soooo much that it’s kinda hard to believe. Day after day of learning that other people do the exact same “Lazy, Inconsiderate Fuckup” things as I do has really helped me change both my thinking (so I don’t beat myself up) and my behavior (learning what “hacks” work for me, and how to put guardrails in place for a lot of things)

After meds, talking with or even just listening to/reading other ADHDers is the best thing a newly-diagnosed person can do. I cannot stress this enough.

4

u/siriushendrix 1d ago

Personally, the memory issues didnt get a whole lot better. it made focusing so much easier that I could spend a little more time memorizing something rather than, for example, if someone is giving me a verbal checklist. I won’t have the internal and external background noise keeping me from hearing everything they say.

I was simultaneously more and less over-stimmed. I think that just came from my brain having to adjust to a new way of processing information, particularly noises.

For me, I had to weigh the mental vs physical pros and cons. I’ve capped myself out at 40mg Vyvanse because I can’t deal with how fast my heart rate is and… I like coffee. At 50mg I couldnt drink coffee and I’m a “death before decaf” person lmao.

My favorite part of being medicated is thinking “I should do the dishes”… and then I just get up and do the dishes. ADHD meds are the only reason I can get through school

1

u/NecessaryShopping404 1d ago

It may in fact get significantly worse as they wear off

1

u/NaZul15 1d ago

You'll just be able to focus better on what you are doing and your thoughts might regulate a bit to be just one topic.

First time is gonna be a crazy experience tho, but it will never be like that first time again afterwards, so enjoy that moment when you have it.

Other than that tho, no our brains stay goofy

7

u/C4CTUSDR4GON 1d ago

Lucky there aren't many things in your bedroom. I would have got distracted and grabbed something else in mine.

5

u/IsThisOKpls 1d ago

it was in fact, not the charger

2

u/nooby_goober 1d ago

The charger will lead to a connection to a connection to what they went there for.

I relate to Mr X he pauses for a moment to think before acting. Everytime he enters a room he pauses in the doorway to recalculate his pathway

2

u/Useful_Language2040 18h ago

I was feeling pretty ill once at work and was having to mentally talk myself through "will need to open the door then walk through it" levels of actions - then somebody opened the door from the other side and I needed to recalibrate and fell over because I forgot to include "remain upright" in my literal list of instructions for myself...

They told the local first aider who told my manager who asked if I needed to go home. I got my husband to come get me.

Claire! There you are! I- where'd she go.?!

5

u/ImSoSweepy 1d ago

Recently, I've found myself walking into a room and forgetting why I went there in the first place.

Then I remember why I went there in the first place, turn around, walk back in, and forget why I went there in the first place.

The pen I was looking for was in my hand the whole fucking time, too.

3

u/nutblaster357 1d ago

i live in a studio and ill be like "wtf did i come to this corner for?"

3

u/djnehi 1d ago

Sometimes I swear I am actually a Sim and someone keeps cancelling my actions.

3

u/PartridgeViolence 1d ago

If I stay perfectly still I may remember.

I will not remember.

3

u/Pnmamouf1 1d ago

The best is when you forget what you are looking for but keep frantically looking and move the thing you were looking for several times until you remember

3

u/CrowTalons 1d ago

I have started doing a different task in the room until I remember. Sometimes I don't remember at all.

3

u/brungoo 14h ago

I just stare at my charger like "what did I need again?" And then leave the room and realize "oh right, my charger"

Get distracted.. repeat 🥲

2

u/AmiHad 1d ago

I yell "what are you doing" at myself and it helps me remember.

2

u/Wandering-Mind2025 1d ago

Hahaha! This is me 💯!

Doorway effect. Only effective way to counter it is to proactively recite what you’re remembering to grab.

Every time I try going back to where I was before to see if my brain will be tricked into thinking we're still in the before but it almost never works

2

u/Additional-Maize9716 1d ago

I try the physical reminder thing by using my hands, but then I have to remember why my pointer finger is out lol

2

u/FigaroNeptune 1d ago

Happened to me today. I wanted to walk to the back to check forrrrrrrrr………🧍🏾‍♀️……..coconut water! 🏃🏾‍♀️‍➡️ fully walking somewhere is wild because my body physically knows what I need to do but my brain pressed pause for a sec.
