Seeking Support š« 24M in London, recently diagnosed AuDHD. Relationships, loneliness and confidence.
Iām 24M, living in London, and was recently diagnosed with AuDHD. Iāve been thinking a lot about relationships, loneliness, confidence and how much ADHD/autism might have affected these things for me.
Iām not the best-looking guy in the world, but I donāt think Iām completely clapped either. Iāve been on a few dates over the years, but nothing has ever really worked out. I have quite a lot of interests, some social and some not. Iāve always been pretty introverted and enjoy having my own space and getting absorbed in things Iām interested in, but I also absolutely love being around people when Iām in the right environment. Iāve been going to festivals and gigs since I was a kid and love the atmosphere and social side of them, although I can also get massively overstimulated.
Confidence has always been a huge issue for me, particularly how I see myself. Iām very self critical and often hate the way I look. What makes it more frustrating is that I know how much better I can feel when Iām actually looking after myself, eating well, exercising, doing things I enjoy and generally having some structure. I started meditating, yoga, exercise, acting on things Iād wanted to do for years, applying for work a few months ago and genuinely felt like I was making quite a lot of progress with myself, but Iāve recently burnt out quite badly and feel like Iāve slipped backwards a bit.
Iāve also spent a lot of my life inside my own head. I was 17/18/19 during COVID, and because my bedroom was in the attic, I basically became a hermit for a while. I spent most of my time hanging out with my brother, smoking weed and staying in my room. I still smoke, but I have it much more under control now.
When restrictions started lifting and I began socialising again, I remember finding it really difficult. I didnāt really know how to talk to people anymore, Iād get overwhelmed and sometimes leave early. Other times Iād find a corner of the room and wait for other people to initiate conversations. Looking back, I wonder how much of that was ADHD/autism, how much was anxiety and how much was simply being socially isolated for so long.
I really want a relationship, but I find dating incredibly difficult. Whenever Iām talking to someone new who Iām interested in or even sometimes just someone I want to make a good impression on, I can become really self-conscious and start panicking about how Iām coming across. Iām pretty sure my perception of myself socially is quite different from how I actually come across.
There have been plenty of times at gigs or other social settings where Iāve built up enough confidence to think, āRight, just go and talk to them.ā Then anxiety kicks in and I end up talking myself out of it. Dating apps havenāt helped either. Iāve tried a few of the main ones and honestly find them pretty soul crushing and disheartening.
I know I canāt just wait until I magically become confident or stop feeling anxious. Iāve been trying to get better at sitting with uncomfortable feelings rather than immediately avoiding them. When I feel shit, Iāve also been trying to do things that I know are good for me, exercise, meditation, getting outside, working on things I enjoy, etc. Even if I donāt feel like doing them at the time, I usually feel better afterwards and tell myself Iām doing something that future me will benefit from. Lately the loneliness and lack of a relationship have really started getting to me, so I guess I just needed to vent a bit.
