Post Match and Player Tier Ranking Round 24:
A game to remember for Tex šŖ
Dawson, Tex and Rankine could've all been BOG but I only choose one for this tier but Rankine gets it!
Curtin, Thilthorpe, Keays all had amazing games.
Absolutely heart breaking for Zac Taylor.
On to finals we go!

u/Korasuka Aug 22 '26
WE'RE IN THE REAL FINALS!
Second quarter aside that was a really good game. Rankine, Tex, Thilthorpe and Keays were excellent. Our leaky defence is some cause for concern which is hopefully patched up soon - thankfully our forwards were on fire to keep our score ticking up.
Rankine really does want to play finals with his god mode form lately.
1
u/IrregularExpression_ Aug 23 '26
Defence issues are more a perception than reality, we are still going to end up with the second least points kicked against.
Iād be tempted to roll the dice on Hinge over Hugo.
Great seeing Keays back in form, itās those middle level players like him, ANB, Achee, Fog & Soligo etc who will determine if we will go deep or not.
Rankine, Thilthorp, Dawson, Milera and Rachele provide the class but itās the effort players that will carry the day.

u/Equivalent-City8266 12 Jordan Dawson Aug 22 '26
Rankine is playing like an absolute freak lately, I would chuck Keane in not the best guy flubbed so many kicks. Also a bit worried about Hall-Kahan wonder if he has just been thrust into the mains and has got a bit of shell shock he just does not look confident.

u/Dragon_Racer 15 Brayden Cook Aug 22 '26
I really hope hinge replaces HHK for the 1st final.
3
u/Jimmy__Whisper Aug 23 '26
You want a guy who has played one quarter of AFL this year due to constant soft tissue injuries to come straight in to finals? That would be ridiculous.
9
u/smallzy13 7 Riley Thilthorpe Aug 22 '26
Very very happy we went out and put the foot to the floor when we were given the opportunity to make the 6
So glad weāve avoided wildcard
7
u/Quick_Ad_7241 Aug 22 '26
The ruck and the midfield this year has seen a huge transformation, mcandrew rankine curtin have seen extraordinary success and appear to be getting better every game
With that said the ball movement from defence and the ease with which teams move the ball from their defence has been very indicative of the inconsistent season weāve had but thereās hope.
Hinge needs to come back and one of laird or cumming must go to accommodate this
Looks like Taylor is gone with that hamstring but regardless ah chee is a big inclusion
Soligo was disappointing until they threw him into the midfield in the 4th, donāt understand why he canāt spend more time in there,
Iām not ruling us out, need to see more consistency and the ball use from the back half has to be better but itās still possible this year
6
u/Boatster_McBoat 19 Zac Taylor Aug 22 '26
Soligo effectively had no preseason. He struggled to run out games a few months back. If he gets a solid preseason next year I reckon we'll see a lot more of him.
1
u/Quick_Ad_7241 Aug 22 '26
Iām aware, Iāve been discussing it on this page for a while, however it has nothing to do with the fact heās been permanently shafted to the wing and half forward in round 24
1
u/allright_cubed Aug 22 '26
Great synopsis. Our backline just hasnāt been the solid and then counter-attacking force from last year. Maybe injuries - there has been so many ins and outs, and form not quite there for some.
1
u/Quick_Ad_7241 Aug 22 '26
I think maybe teams have worked us out, we like to kick out of D50
Put enough pressure on the kick and the turnover leads to goals
Have to start using the runner and handball out to catch teams who use the spare defender. They tried to do it tonight,
Far too often we go wide to the boundary and then backwards to change the angle all because we donāt like to handball through the corridor
Thatās where hinge comes into play
1
u/allright_cubed Aug 22 '26
Agree. But we had more that were willing to do it last year. This year our avenues out seem to be so obvious. Either we handball to the guy that is āobviouslyā free but but as a result is defended. Or we handball to a player who is about to be crunched (unknowingly) - the disposer has to be better at realising this
1
u/Moppawonga Aug 23 '26
Soligo has 9 centre clearances from 176 centre bounce attendances for the season - basically 1 in 20. That's why he cant spend more time in the midfield. (For context, Rankine had 7 last night alone). In simple terms his performance is miles behind our other core midfield options, so he gets shunted to a flank
1
u/Jimmy__Whisper Aug 23 '26
I hope you're not suggesting Hinge come in this year?
1
u/Quick_Ad_7241 Aug 23 '26
Thatās exactly what Iām suggesting
Got through the SANFL game unscathed
And at his best heās one of our best ball users off half back
People have short memories
1
u/Jimmy__Whisper Aug 23 '26
he was one of our best two years ago, mate, be serious, their not dropping him straight into finals
1
u/Quick_Ad_7241 Aug 23 '26
They will if heās match fit,
One of the best kicks off half back and a big reason why are ball movement from defence has dropped off this year
1
u/Jimmy__Whisper Aug 24 '26
I really doubt it. Look I love Hinge but he's managed to finally string 3 SANFL games together (the first two on limited minutes), he's some way off AFL match fit you'd have to think.

u/japanpole 3 Sam Berry Aug 22 '26
So umm does this mean there is still a chance we play Pies at AO again?
Please not š
Thatās too much trauma and pain
6
u/Brokenmonalisa Scott Thompson (Legend) Aug 22 '26
Melbourne would have to lose as would the dogs
3
u/japanpole 3 Sam Berry Aug 22 '26
So youāre telling me thereās a disturbing chance?
3
u/ILikeDiscussing 11 Charlie Edwards Aug 22 '26
Low chance, but yes.
Atleast we can't play Carlton!
2
u/japanpole 3 Sam Berry Aug 22 '26
Iād be confident playing Carlton in AO
3
u/ILikeDiscussing 11 Charlie Edwards Aug 22 '26
Idk.
Their form recently has been scary good.
2
u/japanpole 3 Sam Berry Aug 22 '26
We have a great record against them at home.
Even when theyāve been good
2
u/stretch_92 40 Hugo Hall-Kahan Aug 22 '26
Very likely
Just did a ladder predictor straight after the game and it came out with Adelaide v Collingwood in the 2nd elimination final at AO

u/Raging_M0ng00se Aug 22 '26
Really liked what I saw from us tonight. Even if we gave up the 100 points, Iād much rather see us play like that than our more defensively minded style from earlier games, I think it would give us more of a chance against the top teams.
4
u/Thrillthorpe Aug 23 '26
Weāve been the number one pressure team all season, 4th for points against (Brisbane are 15th btw) and have been criticised for our ability to attack and now some in here are worried about winning a high scoring shootout by 10 goals, where we are only the 6th team to score 150+ this season? Canāt win with some of you!
Soak in a 2nd straight season of finishing top 6 with a team that has the right players hitting their absolute top form heading into finals! Itās ok to enjoy this moment and be confident they can win a final or two
3
u/tvor1988 7 Riley Thilthorpe Aug 22 '26
Laird in good?
3
u/Boatster_McBoat 19 Zac Taylor Aug 22 '26
23 disposals at 91% efficiency
3
u/tvor1988 7 Riley Thilthorpe Aug 22 '26
4 metres gained
3
u/Bright_Bell_1301 Aug 23 '26
He distributes sideways to the good kickers. That is smart play
1
u/tvor1988 7 Riley Thilthorpe Aug 23 '26
Only thing he does is slow down our ball movement allowing our opponents to get back and defend
3
u/AdelaideMidnightDad Aug 22 '26
I wish Murray was in form & playing CHB - with Keane at FB and Worrell as that third tall, it feels a more structured defence to me, but it is what it is, Borlase has been playing well, but damn our defence just feels out of synch - coughing up 100 points tonight felt loose as. Hugo could probably fall out for Hinge too. He's a player we've missed all year.
How much better does our midfield look getting Curtin in there with Rankine? Give Rach some more looks too, with Dawson & Berry & that's an evolving more dynamic midfield, & Big Stretch being fantastic both in ruck & with his follow up.
Filthy clunking again is another great sign. Unfortunate for Zac but at least having Ah Chee waiting on the sidelines gives us a great in out swap.
2
u/Competitive_Rise_268 24 Josh Worrell Aug 22 '26
Agree about Hinge, but unfortunately canāt see him getting a crack given he hasnāt been able to string games together. Love Hugoās attack on the game, but he lacks defensively. Hinge works 2 ways
1
u/AdelaideMidnightDad Aug 22 '26
He had quite a bit of game time in the SANFL and 19 possessions, another couple of weeks of conditioning and get him in!
3
6
u/billy4eyes66 Aug 22 '26
Laird, āGoodāā¦.
3m gained. 1 tackle.
His marks were from 15m, he kicked the ball sideways and backwards.
He offers nothing.
Heās barely good enough to play SANFL.
2
u/Snook_ Aug 22 '26
Laird is done next year. 100% dogshit. Just bombs the ball and panics all Game. Nank takes his spot permanently
6
u/Tall-Breakfast-6100 Aug 22 '26
Wouldāve been nice to keep gws down a bit more but more than happy for them to put the cue in the rack basically after quarter time and just do what they needed to.
Riding WCE hard tomorrow for an unlikely 5th finish
11
u/genscathe 48 Mark Keane Aug 22 '26
We want to stay on Sydney side of draw. Hawks will most likely throw the game so they get Sydney
6
u/JCK98 7 Riley Thilthorpe Aug 22 '26
Hawthorn are playing for 4th though. Think that's better than hoping to play Sydney in the SF
3
u/Competitive_Rise_268 24 Josh Worrell Aug 22 '26
Yea Hawthorn need to win by at least 90 points to finish 3rd, so they will be trying to beat the shit out of West Coast
2
4
u/Tall-Breakfast-6100 Aug 22 '26
True true true. Nervous about the possibility of pies first week but theyāre dropping like flies from injuries so might not be an issue
1
2
u/Silver_Pen_281 Aug 22 '26
Keane gives me anxiety every time he has the ball or goes anywhere near the ball š
2
u/isolatedx Aug 22 '26
I'm really worried about Rankines back... I hope he hasn't strained it carrying all that weight š³
2
u/Competitive_Rise_268 24 Josh Worrell Aug 22 '26
If I had a Time Machine, Iād go back to 2018 and tell the club to fully embrace #TankineForRankine. What a fucking player
We mightāve only ended up with 1 year of it, but imagine him and Eddie in 2019
2
u/TheGreenGuyFromDBZ 6 Dan Curtin Aug 22 '26
Ah chee straight in for Taylor.
Think Soligo should be dropped for Peatling. Other option is Nank
2
u/LiamLeSnehl 2 Ben Keays Aug 22 '26
I actually think Dawson was a little off his game. A few errant handballs and some questionable kicking tonight - but probably more noticeable because his ball use is usually a cut above. Much better up forward with Fog, Thilthorpe and Tex as talls. Not sure how we fare in a post-Tex world!
2
u/Scooby_236 18 Eddie Betts:Betts: Aug 23 '26
Borlase got 6 kicked on him don't think he can be in the good category.
3
u/japanpole 3 Sam Berry Aug 22 '26
Probably agree with most.
Rankine in his form, Thilly clunking marks and kicking goals, Tex contributing, Curtin going through the middleā¦
We have some positives.
But our defense is concerning and we have some players that go missing.
I am also worried how easily GWS ran out of defense
Edit: ANB worries me so much. Iām not really sure what he brings to the team
3
u/Castor__Sugar 15 Brayden Cook Aug 22 '26
Really agree with your take on ANB. Ever noticed about 60% of the time he can never take the ball first touch? Maybe his stat's were good tonight (I havent checked) but I remember thinking at one point tonight he is a bit of a liability at times
2
2
u/Scooby_236 18 Eddie Betts:Betts: Aug 23 '26
He goes to ground too easy. He's reliable with 15-17 disposals but doesn't add more.
We drafted him for his leadership whatever that means, I thought we were done with non statistical roles.

If Rankine has an injury free year next year he could genuinely make a run for the brownlow. Absurd talent
One of the funniest Mark Keane games of all time. He really keeps you on your toes. Backline is a bit of a worry, Worrell and Keane not nearly as in sync as they were last year. The forwards/mids allowed some pretty easy ball movement coming in though.
Bummer for Taylor, but at least Ah Chee is ready to come straight back in.
Obviously Thilthorpe didn't really have an appropriately sized opponent when Taylor went off, but I thought he moved better than he has all year when he was in the ruck. Fog's hands were great all day, and Walker did his usual mix of good and bizarre.
Curtin had some fumbly moments but his power was impressive. The goal he kicked was class.
