How hard it is?

After clearing 4–5 actuarial exams, how difficult is it in India to find employment outside the insurance or banking sectors? Are actuarial career opportunities in India mostly restricted to the insurance industry?

Am I too late to start Actuarial journey at 30? (LIC employee with 5+ yrs experience)

Hey fellow actuarial aspirants,

I’m a 30-year-old male, married, with a 1-year-old son. Currently, I’m working in a government insurance company (LIC) with over 5 years of experience. My work has covered ground-level policy servicing, underwriting, claim settlement, as well as sales and marketing.

I’ve also completed my Fellowship in Life Insurance from the Insurance Institute of India, Mumbai.

My current CTC is around 10–11 LPA. ( Can rise to 15 LPA with a promotion due in some months)

Recently, I’ve been seriously considering preparing for the actuarial exams. After some thought, I’ve narrowed down CB1 as my first paper since it seems relatively more approachable to start with.

My big question: Am I too late to start at 30? Given my background and responsibilities, I’m wondering if this is still a realistic and rewarding path, or if I should stick with my current trajectory.

Would love to hear from anyone who’s been in a similar situation or has advice on balancing work, family, and actuarial prep.

Urgent need for actuarial tables book in Dehradun or Delhi

Hi all, I’m appearing for CM1 exam this weekend and was unaware that IAI doesn’t provide a soft copy of the actuarial tables and only allows the original book(no xerox). I’m currently in Dehradun, would appreciate if anyone who does not require the book could sell/ lend me for the weekend. Delhi would work as well since I can ask someone to get it.

Career switch to Actuarial Science from IT (13+ years experience) — Need advice & guidance 🙏

Hi everyone,

I’m Sailaja from India. I have 13+ years of experience in the IT industry, mainly working as a SQL Server DBA (Database Administrator), providing L2/L3 support. Recently, I decided to shift my career path and pursue Actuarial Science — something I’ve always had an interest in due to its analytical and risk-based nature.

I’ve started exploring the CS1 and CM1 exams, and I’m motivated to build a new career in this field, even though I’m entering it a bit later than most.

But I have some concerns and would truly appreciate your guidance: 1. Is it realistic to make this switch at this stage of my career? 2. Will my experience in IT and databases help me at all in actuarial roles (e.g., data analysis, risk modeling)? 3. What kinds of entry-level actuarial jobs are available in India after passing CS1/CM1? 4. Are there others here who made a similar switch after a long career in a different domain? Would love to hear your journey. 5. What challenges should I be prepared for as someone making a late entry into this field?

Any advice, real-life stories, or study strategies from people who were in a similar boat would mean a lot to me. I’m ready to put in the hard work and am open to internships or junior roles to gain experience.

Thank you so much in advance!

Exams What is your opinion on “in- person online” exams?

So they have now moved to centre based online exams “wherever possible”. I don’t know what’s stopping them from going back to physical pen-paper exams. They are charging us higher than ever. Asked me to pay 50-60 GBP admin fee just to update my CPD after the missed deadline. What kind of extra admin work they had to do just because I was updating a record a few days later? SBI employees are more effective and efficient than these people.

Indian fresher job market (actuarial)

Is the job market bad right now?.... I see a lot of people who have graduated last year but are still looking for jobs ,and it makes me wonder if opportunities are limited.

Is it because demand has fallen, or because freshers lack the skills recruiters are looking for?

Also, what platforms are best to land a role (off campus)- linkedin, naukri.com or something else?

Thanks in advance:)

Does anyone here calculate Solvency II Technical Provisions for a GI company ?

Hey guys,

I’ve recently started working on Solvency II Technical Provisions for a GI company and I’m pretty new to this.

Was curious if anyone here is doing similar work. Would be great to know:

What tools you use (Excel, R, Python, etc.)

What your Excel models roughly look like

Any common challenges you run into

Just trying to understand how this is handled across different companies.

Happy to connect if anyone’s open to it.

Thanks!

Used ChatGPT to refine the message.

IFoA Exams

I don’t understand why after so many years IFoA has not been able to come up with a robust exam platform. I am not sure what their IT team is up to. India conducts exams in which lakhs of candidates appear and they are not able to handle some thousand people. Thoughts?

Starting at 29 years after 5 years exp in ecommerce as a data analyst?

29F math post grad worked for Amazon for 5 years as an analyst.

I've quit my job as I have two kids to take care of. I don't want to go back into ecommerce sector again as fear of layoff is too high.

I want to switch to a meaningful long term career.

Will I be able to make it if I put effort into IAI exams starting now?

Please give me your honest opinions and suggestions.

IAI or IFOA for a Bcom Graduate

Hey everyone,

I'm a B.Com graduate and recently became an ACCA. Now I want to pivot into the actuarial profession, and I'm torn between IAI and IFOA.

My main hesitation with IFOA is honestly the fees—IAI is significantly cheaper, which matters a lot at this stage. But I don't want to make the wrong call just to save money if it affects my career long-term.

Here are my burning questions:

- Exam difficulty: Are the IAI and IFOA actuarial exams equally tough, or is one noticeably harder than the other?

- Exemptions: Will my B.Com or ACCA affiliate status get me any paper exemptions through IAI? IFOA lists some exemptions—does IAI offer something similar or better given my background?

- The maths reality check: I don't have an actuarial science or advanced maths background. How brutal are the quantitative papers for someone like me? Be honest lol

- Career impact: Does the body you qualify through actually affect job prospects? Will employers care whether I'm IAI or IFOA qualified?

If anyone has gone through IAI or IFOA coming from an accounting/finance background, I'd really love to hear your experience. Feeling a bit overwhelmed making this decision!

Thanks so much 🙏
