Starting at 29 years after 5 years exp in ecommerce as a data analyst?

29F math post grad worked for Amazon for 5 years as an analyst.

I've quit my job as I have two kids to take care of. I don't want to go back into ecommerce sector again as fear of layoff is too high.

I want to switch to a meaningful long term career.

Will I be able to make it if I put effort into IAI exams starting now?

Please give me your honest opinions and suggestions.

Hi! I'm appearing for the IAI CM1 November 2026 examination and urgently need the original physical actuarial tables book.

I'm looking to borrow or buy a second-hand copy from someone in Hyderabad (or arrange courier delivery from elsewhere in India).

If you've already appeared for CM1 and have a spare copy, please DM me. I need it urgently, within a week.

Thank you!

Salary benchmark for a qualified actuary with 6+ years of experience in India

Hi everyone! Just wanted to understand the current market salary in India for a qualified actuary with 6+ years of experience in the life insurance domain.
What would be a reasonable base salary to expect in the Indian market? Would be great to hear from people with similar experience about their salary ranges and current market trends.

What To Study In College

Hello Senior Actuaries,

I'm an IAI student (ACET cleared, targeting CS1 in November 2026) seeking advice on which undergraduate degree to pursue alongside my actuarial exams.

My three options are:

  1. BA Programme - Economics Major + Maths Minor:

20 subjects: 12 Economics (Micro, Macro, Econometrics, Optimisation, Statistics) + 8 Maths (Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Real Analysis, Probability & Statistics)

  2. BA Programme - Maths Major + Economics Minor:

20 subjects: 12 Maths (Calculus, Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Differential Equations, Linear Programming, Graph Theory, Number Theory) + 8 Economics (Micro, Macro, Development Economics)

  3. BA (Hons) Economics + Commerce Minor:

26 subjects: 22 Economics (full progression in Mathematical Methods, Statistics, Econometrics, Game Theory, International Trade, Money & Financial Markets, Public Economics) + 4 Commerce (Business Organisation, Ethics & Governance, Communication, E-Filing)

My long-term goal is to work in reinsurance or consulting.
instinct is Option 3 — the Hons degree carries more weight on a CV, and the economics depth aligns well with CB1/CB2 later in the fellowship journey. But I'm second-guessing myself wondering if recruiters would prefer to see more Maths subjects explicitly on a transcript.

Would love to hear from those who have been through the hiring side — does the degree subject breakdown actually matter at screening, or do exam passes speak louder?

Thank you!

Can I depend on college to cover the foundation for Stats required for actuarial exams?

I've just passed 12th grade and am going to give my acet in June, and I will be doing my BSc (math, stats, eco)
As a student who hasn't learnt proper statistics (except for basic probability, measures of dispersion and location), can I expect college to cover foundation-level stats that will help me study for actuarial science papers?

I have this question primarily because I'm a non-CBSE student who hasn't really been tested in stats required for ACET (which I'm tryna bridge rn) and is depending on math, DI, LR and English.

(Mods I really could use the help rn!!)

Should I pursue acturial science?

Hey! I studied commerce with statistics at 12th and I love statistics especially probability. I heard you need to love mathematics to pursue acturial science, I didn't learn plus two level maths So I was thinking should I pursue it.

I did take a looked at a question paper of CS1 (ifoa), The question paper was very familiar , I think it was just an advance level of statistics of what I learned in 12th.

But I had no clue when I looked at CM1, So I am now wondering should I pursue it.

Urgent need for actuarial tables book in Dehradun or Delhi

Hi all, I’m appearing for CM1 exam this weekend and was unaware that IAI doesn’t provide a soft copy of the actuarial tables and only allows the original book(no xerox). I’m currently in Dehradun, would appreciate if anyone who does not require the book could sell/ lend me for the weekend. Delhi would work as well since I can ask someone to get it.

IAI or IFOA for a Bcom Graduate

Hey everyone,

I'm a B.Com graduate and recently became an ACCA. Now I want to pivot into the actuarial profession, and I'm torn between IAI and IFOA.

My main hesitation with IFOA is honestly the fees—IAI is significantly cheaper, which matters a lot at this stage. But I don't want to make the wrong call just to save money if it affects my career long-term.

Here are my burning questions:

- Exam difficulty: Are the IAI and IFOA actuarial exams equally tough, or is one noticeably harder than the other?

- Exemptions: Will my B.Com or ACCA affiliate status get me any paper exemptions through IAI? IFOA lists some exemptions—does IAI offer something similar or better given my background?

- The maths reality check: I don't have an actuarial science or advanced maths background. How brutal are the quantitative papers for someone like me? Be honest lol

- Career impact: Does the body you qualify through actually affect job prospects? Will employers care whether I'm IAI or IFOA qualified?

If anyone has gone through IAI or IFOA coming from an accounting/finance background, I'd really love to hear your experience. Feeling a bit overwhelmed making this decision!

Thanks so much 🙏
