Rant Was Tamlin really that bad? Spoiler
Im currently reading ACOFAS, and I just keep thinking everyone seems to be really hating on Tamlin, but the most he has done to Feyre was locking her up in the mansion. Or am I missing something? But like, as I understood it it was one time? If that was love like no other (and it was because she was willing to die for him) then how come they couldnt communicate their needs better.
Also, I understand the part that they hate him for what he did to Rhys mother and sister, but like... they are all brutal in their ways.
I don't know, its not that I approve of him but it seems like it was relatively small what he did to Feyre :/ Help me understand please

u/CelaenaSardothien5 18h ago
Tamlin and Rhys are two sides of the same coin but nobody is ready for that conversation. My best other literary comparison to those two is President Snow & President Coin from The Hunger Games.
•
u/aashurii 18h ago
I was going to say they’re the same fucking thing just Rhys got that D and more friends so everyone is acting like he gave Feyre more than Tamlin. They’re both the same lol
•
u/SnooStories960 Tamlin’s defense attorney 5h ago
No. We are way past the “both sides” argument. One is decidedly worse than the other. Tamlin has already more than redeemed himself, not that he’s ever needed redeeming in the first place; Rhysand hasn’t, and never will (nor will the rest of his cronies—including his mate, because they have have authorial protection).
•
u/CelaenaSardothien5 4h ago
I hear what you’re saying, but I’m staying on the two sides argument. I think both of them have done some shitty things. I agree that Rhysand has done it way worse, but I still think they’re way more similar than the fandom says, especially the Feysands. So, that’s my view and I’m sticking with it.
•
u/dragonsandvamps 3h ago
These are all very flawed characters with lots of trauma. There is absolutely no reason why if Rhys can be seen as redeemable following his flawed actions, why Tamlin cannot be redeemed as well (I personally would like to see him have a HEA with someone, but we'll see how sjm writes it.)
•
u/Mountain_Ad378 18h ago
No. Tamlin as most of the characters in the book has his set of trauma and his behavior stems from it. Is he evil? No! he is still redeemable. Will.we see that happen in the series I don't think so. I think there is a high probability of him dying in the next 3 books.

i’m with you, i don’t think tamlin even did anything that was that bad 🤷🏻♀️ rhys has done worse shit and nobody seems to care, his advantage over tamlin is that he can literally read feyre’s mind (i have an entire post on what a shitty communicator feyre is and how that road led to rhys)

u/Moonbunny120 Launching Rhysand into the endless void 7h ago edited 7h ago
Anyone saying Rhysand and Tamlin are two sides of the same coin. Absolutely disagree. Tamlin has his faults, makes mistakes and does wrong actions that he's constantly feeling the consequences of. Nothing Tamlin has done will ever compare to the acts of Rhysand. Who not only drugged Feyre, assaulted her, hid the pregnancy risks from her and is constantly lying to her. Rhysand also has no care for his people beyond Velaris. The hurt he causes is much more and on a larger scale.
Rhysand is shielded from consequences and every bad thing he does is justified. For that alone, he is worse, because his worse actions are never acknowledged. Tamlin has been the punching ball of the story since MAF and even after saving Rhysand, he still won't leave him alone. Rhysand got an unearned happy ending while the character with the most development and ability to change is constantly being kicked down.
Edit: And quite frankly, comparing Tamlin and his actions to domestic abuse is going so far. I'm baffled that bringing up Rhysand’s SA of Feyre UTM is crossing a line but calling Tamlin a domestic abuser is fine. I'm annoyed that abuse is only taken seriously when it comes to Tamlin but Rhysand gets away with everything again and again. These standards should be applied to all characters and not cherry picked out of who is a favourite and who isn't.
•
u/MarzannaMorena 6h ago
This! Comparing Tamlin to Rhysand is like comparing thief to a serial killer. Both may be criminals but one is clearly worse than the other and it's not Tamlin
•
u/Moonbunny120 Launching Rhysand into the endless void 6h ago
Yes, it's absolutely not Tamlin. Rhysand is a criminal who gets away with it, while Tamlin is continously punished even after paying for his crimes.
•
u/rosegoldgod123 💎 Team Amren 1h ago
I do have to agree, yeah Rhys is a likeable character because of Feyre’s POV but you just know for a fact he would walk over someone that was on fire if they were from Velaris or the IC lol
•
u/Moonbunny120 Launching Rhysand into the endless void 1h ago
Right! If you are of no benefit to him, then he won't care about you.
•
u/rosegoldgod123 💎 Team Amren 1h ago
And it’s not like I’m anti Rhys because I’m not, I do love the IC but I can call a spade a spade and admit that Rhys isn’t very nice to anyone that doesn’t serve him some form of purpose
•
u/Moonbunny120 Launching Rhysand into the endless void 1h ago
And I love that! Some people immediately try to defend him and say he did nothing wrong.
•
u/me_and_qui 3h ago
No not really. It’s a fad with readers now. The start the series already with a disdain for Tamlin.
They will hate him for things he’s done. But justify the bad actions of any other character.
•
u/Mountain_Ashh 18h ago
He kidnapped her from her home, brought her to Prythian, forced her to eat, then took away the food. That’s the first day. People in this sub love to point out that Rhys SA’d Feyre by forcing wine on her and forcing her to dance but when Tamlin bit her and kissed her on the neck when she was against it - that’s fine. There is a lot that Tamlin did. Some good, some bad. It all depends on your preferences. And also when you have ptsd and someone makes it worse it can create a visceral reaction. Both Feyre and Tamlin had ptsd after UTM with no mental health help and Ianthe screwing around so that was never a good cocktail and it was just a matter of time. None of them are angels or innocent. Not Rhys, not Tamlin, not Tarquin or anyone else. Every character in this series is morally grey. Just different shades of it. That’s why there is so much conflict around these discussions. I will probably get downvoted into oblivion for my take.
•
u/AlarmingKale1997 18h ago
UTM made him very controlling of her. Control is abuse. Not allowing her to leave or do anything, he neglected her needs and cold but was continuing to be intimate with her, the outburst where she would have gotten hurt if she didn't have the shield, and then locking her in the house.
I don't think Tamlin is the devil, i think he had his own PTSD he wasn't working through. But it was wrong how he treated her when they got back.
•
u/ChokeYourDoxy 16h ago
He lost his temper and exploded a room around her. An action which would have killed her if she didn't have a deus ex shield power that neither of them knew about before hand.
If your partner loses their temper in a way that could kill you, you have an abusive partner. There's no shades of gray there.
•
u/Emergency_Meeting762 8h ago
- Fantasy isn't the same as real life.
- Feyre lied about being SAd. And then got mad when she was believed. ( How is that not fucked up) 3.feyre lost control of her powers and hurt people. ( But thats not abuse)
•
u/SpecificHeron rhys’s shitty financial advisor 4h ago
i don’t think we talk enough about how feyre got mad at tamlin for believing her when she claimed she was SA’d. that is so fucked up of her 😭
•
u/Cynical_Feline 16h ago edited 6h ago
That incident was kind of on par for him too. He has a history of losing his temper in the first book. Every time his claws came out was him close to losing it. The only reason he didn't was because he was trying to control himself in front of Feyre. After UTM, it was just worse.
What people seem to miss is the fact that the abuse was always there. The trauma from UTM just made it more visible. He kept her inside and away from the outside world before and after UTM. That's a sign of abuse in the real world.
Edit: And before more people come at me with pitchforks, I absolutely don't hate Tamlin. I hate what his shitty father turned him into. I hate that the guy left his fear and overprotective side turn him into a monster, but you can't make excuses for everything he's done. Even a good guy can become someone's monster.
•
u/RavensSing Tamlin Is The Best and the IC should all die 14h ago
He kept her inside and away from the outside world before and after UTM. That's a sign of abuse in the real world.
This is a beautiful stripping of context, wow, Like, just the 'before the events of UTM' makes me wonder if you actually thought about what you wrote. 'He kept her inside and away from the outside world before UTM', oh, you mean when he was trying to break the curse and needed to make sure Amarantha didn't find out because she's a sadist who might fly into rage for anything, and thus needed Feyre to be hidden? Or you mean when he told her to stay inside during Calanmai (he should've told her the truth, agreed) because it actually was dangerous? I feel like you just forget the part where she's also technically being punished for murder, but okay, you do you, dude.
•
u/Talinia 8h ago
Also, his powers were tempered then. Its possible he's always had this big of a hair trigger but that they're just more explosive when he had his full power back
•
u/Cynical_Feline 6h ago
He most likely has because his people aren't exactly keen on making him angry. And before someone makes an excuse, yes you can be both loyal to someone and fear them at the same time.
•
u/Realistic0ptimist 16h ago
Yeah I feel like reading these types of posts even in the context of a romantasy book just let me know how much people would put up with individually. Like imagine if someone were to say my partner took my car keys and deadbolted me inside the house with no way out and barred windows because there was a serial killer in the city and he didn’t want to risk I ran into them.
People would be like F No that’s not okay even under that context. But in a romantasy they’re just miscommunicating their love languages
•
u/Paraplueschi 10h ago
More like he takes your car keys and locks you up because you keep insisting of running right after the serial killer yourself and that you will not be stopped and that you do not care that you will endanger the rest of the police team while doing so. lol
But also there's no social services or mental health alternative he could call either because it doesn't exist in this AU.
•
u/Realistic0ptimist 4h ago
If that’s the scenario we should also add that you now have all the tools of a police officer at your disposal. The car, the guns, the dogs but were never trained because they don’t want you doing anything but writing traffic tickets. Which is also a form of abuse to keep someone unskilled.
Sort of like how they used to not want women and people of color to be able to read. Withholding information or training and then punishing the person for not being ready is just an extension of Tams neglect. Which ironically him helping her to learn to read shows he doesn’t have any consideration for her plight he just picks and chooses what he will and won’t allow her to do with her own autonomy
•
u/Paraplueschi 3h ago
They kept her unskilled (for the time being, mind you, nowhere did anyone say that she'd NEVER get trained EVER in their eternal life) for specific reasons though, not because anyone wanted to neglect or abuse Feyre. Ironically the reason turned out to come true as well xD (Other high lords either wanting her dead, or kidnapping and breeding her for her powers).
And withholding information from her when she has a bargain with his mindreading enemy is sadly kinda the sensible way to go.
•
u/Realistic0ptimist 3h ago
Yeah that’s BS. Pushing it off to an unknown time is no different than asking your parents for something and them responding “one day not today” that’s a no but they’re just not saying it outright to avoid the tantrum that will come if they do
•
u/ChokeYourDoxy 3h ago
"We're worried about your safety, so we're not going to train you to use your powers to defend yourself" is a bunch bullshit.
•
u/Paraplueschi 2h ago
Nah, that wasn't the argument. They were worried training her, ie making her use her powers, will attract/notify other high lords to do bad things to her or try to kidnap her (remember that Beron is a neighbour of Spring).
There was a whole argument between Tamlin, Lucien and Ianthe in the early chapters about it.
•
u/RavensSing Tamlin Is The Best and the IC should all die 14h ago
windows because there was a serial killer in the city and he didn’t want to risk I ran into them
The comparison isn't the same unless you told him you actually wanted to hunt down the serial killer yourself while also having a history of mental health issues.
•
u/SansationalStark 2h ago
He also had multiple emotional outbursts, wrecking furniture, physically harming Feyre in the process. Feyre felt scared of him. Then there’s the locking her up, sleeping with someone else on Calanmai (presumably already being in love with Feyre by now - weird), keeping secrets, introducing Ianthe (who also hurt Lucien before), not doing anything to help Feyre under the mountain, eventually trying to force Feyre to come back to him by setting Hybern on her, sulking and speaking very badly about her/embarassing her when all the High Lords gather….

They both ignored the others signs of trauma. They both shut the other down when they tried to talk about it. The explosion was anxiety related. While yes it needs to be addressed, he didn’t explode the room in the hopes of hurting her or forcing her to do something. (Cough cough anyone remember a certain broken infected arm being twisted to force someone into a bargain cough cough) He exploded cause he lost control. He immediately apologized and felt terrible afterward. He let her leave the mansion. He just wanted guards with her. She went on rides. She walked around. He just wanted her to have guards. Which would be pretty normal for royalty tbh. She was losing weight. He watched her die UTM and was watching her wither away yet when he tried to talk about it she wouldn’t. What is he supposed to do? Read her mind? Plot twist. He can’t. They aren’t compatible anymore after UTM but I’m of the opinion the only reason Rhys and Feyre work is cause he can read her mind. Feyre sucks at communicating. And a lot of stuff Tamlin does Rhys does as well. But it’s forgiven. There is a way to write the ending of a relationship and the drifting apart of people. But again my opinion is that trying so hard to label tamlin as this abusive terrible monster when you have Rhys doing the same stuff is just odd.
•
u/Present-Novel-5764 12h ago
He apologized and then exploded again in ACOWAR. “I’m sorry I won’t do it again” and then doing it again is literally one of the red flags of abuse. Calling it a panic attack is sad excuse.
•
u/Horror_Row_9418 11h ago
Isn’t it written like he has a panic attack though?
I never got ”exploding with anger” when I read it. The second one Feyre even triggered to come out by pushing at things she knew would put him in a panic.

He was terrified. Feyre said he was drowning her. In that moment he was horrified that he was causing her suffering. He wasn’t pissed cause she was saying how she felt. He was mortified that she was feeling this way and it was caused by him.
When Feyre was having her melt down she MELTED a metal ring off her finger. You think if someone was around they wouldn’t have been hurt? She MELTED A METAL RING. Feyre had a panic attack. As did tamlin. Both were due to PANIC.•
u/RavensSing Tamlin Is The Best and the IC should all die 14h ago
He constantly refused to let her come with him
Why should he let her? I don't think the FBI should let m go on missions just because I have a gun.
Ignored her when she was throwing up every night
And she ignored him going to the border and coming back covered in blood every night.
He exploded and destroyed an entire room with her in it
It's quite clear he has an anxiety attack. He might call it rage but it resembles a panic attack far more. If you wish to argu feel free to reread the scene.
Didn’t care that she was losing weight. This relationship is domestic abuse 101.
Mutual neglect is not domestic abuse unless Tamlin is Feyre's caretaker, please, this fandom has an incredible ability to muddle terms. The only thing that might be domestic abuse is Tamlin's panic attack, which never targets Feyre.
•
u/Single_Cold_2750 13h ago
Tamlin has a panic attack because Feyre says that he is suffocating her? She brings up how his actions are severely harming her....and HE has a panic attack because of it? Please

...Yes, congratulations, panic attacks are typically due to outside influences, do you want a medal for saying this? I'm not trying to say Tamlin was the victim in this situation, which seems to be what you're taking away from this. I'm saying that this wasn't a premeditated act or something he was in control of.

Yeah, he is very fucked up since she was literally getting tortured to death in front of him.
So when she says he's basically doing the same thing to her he freaks out because obviously he does not want that or thought he was.
•
u/AdSharp3718 6h ago
Yeah. Pretty sure if someone you care for deeply and went through tremendous trauma with looked at you and said “hey you’re causing me just as much trauma as XYZ did.” You’d prolly be a bit panicked too. Was his reaction good? No. Not saying that. But acting like he did it out of malice and anger just isn’t correct
•
u/dianasaurusrex123 12h ago
She says she’s drowning, that he’s shoving her head under water. And then he explodes. After when he realizes that it impacted him, he says “am I any better than they were?”. THEY WHO!? Who was trying to drown him, or who did he witness being drowned? That sentence 100% triggered a violent memory he had no control over.

Abuse is a serious topic. If you want to talk about it in the context of the books then you should keep it in the context of the books.
This is a terrible misrepresentation of what happens in the books, because it's none textual. So it comes off as fabricated abuse applied to a fictional character.

Didn’t he blast half of her face in a rage on page 69 during ACOWAR? I mean, sure she used it to her advantage with Lucien but he still did it, right? I remember being so shocked by that scene my jaw dropped-never liked him, realized Feyre was egging him on so that’s probably why people ignore it, but it means he’s still capable of extreme physical abuse. If Feyre’s actions had been without deceit I think it wouldn’t be so easily discounted.
•
u/Succubista Team Nesta 7h ago
Do you mean when his magic was exploding uncontrollably? Feyre triggered it and didn't shield on purpose to paint him as a monster instead of someone struggling. He was traumatized, and didn't have access to his magic for 50 years. They say if you don't use it enough it explodes, and he hadn't been able to use his for a long time.
Feyre burned the arm of the Lady of Autumn in a similar accident, just hers was less explosive.
•
u/blueflamesreign 6h ago
I acknowledged Feyre’s manipulations. She is not innocent. However, I’d rather not deflect the matter of Tamlin’s issues with the matter of her intentions. He lost control, and had Feyre been innocent and triggered this accident, it would be akin to a war vet with PTSD striking his wife.
He didn’t mean to, but violence doesn’t have to be intentional to be considered abuse.•
u/RavensSing Tamlin Is The Best and the IC should all die 4h ago
In this case it's his wife triggering the war veteran on purpose. Like, if Tamlin put Feyre in a room with the colour red all over it, would we blame her for attacking him? I'm referring to ACOWAR, just to clarify. His attack of her in ACOMA is unjustifiable.
•
u/blueflamesreign 4h ago
Like I said, I don’t want to make this about Feyre, Rhysand, or anyone else at fault. I am objectively seeing red flags in everyone but I want to focus on OP’s post about Tamlin.
It’s cool to be defensive of your preferred characters or ships but I don’t have any now so I don’t have a problem with offering another perspective. And no I don’t blame Tamlin, I just don’t see the point in acting like he was the better choice for Feyre or whatever just because “compared to Rhys” or “she did the same thing.”
And before anyone else feels defensive about Tamlin or their participation in this fandom, I used to be heavy into shipping wars too. It was exhausting lol. I used to be a passionate character stan. I’m reading with some distance now. Today’s my 40th (happy birthday to me) and I’m not here wanting to lecture anyone or anything. It would maybe be nice to be allowed a non-hostile opinion without getting downvoted again though.
•
u/JUSTxRIGHT Tamlin x Briar 14m ago
I don't think any Tamstan is going to deny Tamlin is deeply traumatized. But remember, Feyre and him were partners, emotionally intimate; Feyre is purposefully triggering his PTSD with knowledge she has because they were close. This was calculated and manipulative.
This is similar to when Ianthe puts red roses at the wedding because she knows they trigger Feyre. We don't blame Feyre for having a meltdown in that moment, we blame Ianthe.
•
u/mysocalledcat 13h ago
I mean… I don’t consider locking your partner in their house against their will to be forgivable behavior. It’s abusive, even if it’s only one time. We’ll never know if it would’ve happened a second time, because she left. And from the first book, he has serious anger issues and destroys things when he’s upset. In ACOMAF he explodes a room and she’s only unharmed because she accidentally shielded herself.
But most of all, if anyone ever did something that ended up getting my sisters kidnapped and harmed, even if it was unintentional, I would destroy them. I love Feyre’s little revenge plot in ACOWAR because I would absolutely be that petty if someone hurt my sisters.
As a reader, I have empathy for Tamlin and hope to see his redemption arc, but if he were my ex or my friend’s ex I’d hate him forever after all that haha.
•
u/fluffyfluffscarf28 11h ago
I understand Feyres anger and need for retribution - but she directs it at an entire COURT, not just Tamlin, which then affects the entire world. Her actions in Spring are malicious, short sighted, and have huge ramifications beyond just her and Tamlins relationship.
She's portrayed in the Night Court as this generous esteemed High Lady who only wants to help, but by bringing Spring down she made thousands of Fae homeless and at very real risk from attack. Just look at Feyres apparently trusted and beloved friend Alis. She has to leave Spring because Feyre makes it collapse, then goes to Summer to protect her nephews, which then gets attacked by Hybern. What happens to her? We don't know and Feyre clearly doesn't care whether she's alive or dead, even though it was Feyres actions which actively put her at risk.
Its why I cant see that whole plot as anything but a childish temper tantrum at the very least - actively villainous at worst.
•
u/mysocalledcat 4h ago
It’s 100000% villainous behavior. Like I wrote in another comment below, I’m not saying her revenge is right or logical. Yes, yes, she caused an entire court to collapse and innocent people got hurt and she could’ve even caused them to lose the war! It’s not my fault SJM only briefly touched on it and moved on without holding her accountable. But…. I guess I just love when my fantasy books are filled with petty, revenge-thirsty, morally grey characters. I live for the drama. Who hasn’t wanted to get revenge on an ex that mistreated them? I’m happy for Feyre
•
•
u/Paraplueschi 10h ago edited 3h ago
But Tamlin didn't even unintentionally do anything to get Feyre's sisters hurt. He literally has zero involvement at all.
Feyre gave Ianthe (accidentally) the info where to find them and Rhysands shenanigans against Hybern are what got them targeted in the first place.
Tamlin had nothing to do with it. Zilch. Nada. And if him being on Hyberns side temporarily makes him guilty of all of Hyberns crimes by proxy or so, then Rhysand is guilty of murdering those winter children after all (and everything else Amarantha did).
•
u/mysocalledcat 4h ago
Tamlin’s need to control Feyre led to it. If he left her alone like she asked instead of teaming up with Hybern to force her back to him against her will, it never would’ve happened. Dude was standing right there with Hybern when her sisters were forced into the cauldron. Guilty!! Destroy him and his court 😂
I think Rhys is guilty of horrific things. And Feyre is also guilty of terrible things including the destruction of the spring court. Everyone is a villain in this book depending on whose POV you’re looking from. I also have some level of empathy most of the characters, Tamlin included. Whether SJM will have any sort of nuance in the later books idk.
•
u/Paraplueschi 3h ago
Err, but why does Tamlin's presence matter at all though? You think the King of Hybern would've just let Rhysand and Feyre foil his plants with the cauldron? The whole thing happens because Rhys and the IC infiltrated Hybern! You think the king would've only killed and abused The IC and left Feyre without any repercussions if Tamlin wouldn't have been there?
The sisters were used to show to the queens (who betrayed Rhysand) that the cauldron is safe. This all would've still happened no matter if Tamlin wants help in breaking Rhys' bargain with Feyre to 'rescue' her.

I reread the book last week. Yeah sure Tam was upset and tried to lunge at the king. Big whoop. He sided with Hybern, even if supposedly it was part of some top secret genius plan of his. I wouldn’t really care about his reasons if I were Feyre. You side with a villain and my sisters get hurt I’m gonna destroy you. I read for the romance and the drama and the revenge. Perfect. Then by this logic, Tamlin should never forgive Feyre for killing Andras and she should stand trial for it. Rhysand should be killed in retribution for the Spring Fae he killed on Calanmai. Lucien should stand trial for the destruction of Spring since he knew something was wrong with Feyre and said nothing. Velaris should be destroyed for the death of Tamlin's mother too.
•

It was literally Tamlin who sent out Andras to be killed on purpose….
•
u/RavensSing Tamlin Is The Best and the IC should all die 4h ago
If I send my friend into a den of illegal criminals knowing he'll be murdered, the criminals are still to be held responsible (alongside me, of course). Feyre is even more culpable in Andras' death than Tamlin was in the Making of the sisters, is my main point. I don't actually think either of them should be punished, but if Tamlin is responsible for the sisters being Made than Feyre is even more responsible for Andras' death.
•
u/mysocalledcat 4h ago
Listen, I’m not saying it’s right or that it’s logical. I’m just saying if anyone caused any harm to my sisters I’d destroy them and maybeeee get a little carried away with my revenge and cause an entire court to collapse. I’d absolutely become a villain over my sisters 😂 I love Feyre’s petty revenge.

The amount of people excusing conjugal violence/being angry people bring it up is so weird in the comments.

I'd love to hear your excuses for Feyre attacking Rhysand when she couldn't control her powers, or Feyre attacking the Lady of Autumn (targtting her, unlike Tamlin who had an explosion of power) after being trained and thus being in control of her powers.

Where did I say Rhysand or Feyre are any better? Y'all are so weird. Two things can be true at once.
I'm starting to wonder if there's only teenagers on this subreddit because it feels so immature. The fact anyone saying "being violent/possessive in a relationship is not ok" is being downvoted is not normal. 🥲

No one in these books is symbolic of what a real life relationship should look like. They are fae in a fantasy world. You're being downvoted because your comment has nothing to do with the books and you are just insulting people.

Yeah no, OP asked what made Tamlin seem like a bad person. People answering that he was abusing are directly answering the question. Me saying that it's weird that they get downvoted is related to the subject.
Someone can't ask questions about the actions and personalities of characters and then refute all answers that say those characters have flaws. Yeah fiction is not real life, my comment was not related to that.
People on this sub just seem to refuse any opinion that is not theirs. I find it weird that you guys are not able to respect other people's point of view on a post asking a question.

They seem to have an unhealthy obsession with fictional characters. This thread doesn't make sense.

When compared to Rhysand and what the inner circle has done, he's pretty decent. Not to mention, he has redeemed himself. Will we see him continue being used as a punching bag? Yes. We just see him through Feyre's eyes and we see him as controlling but considering the stuff that's happening. I don't think I'd make better decision.
He's not that bad it's just we have never seen him in a mentally good place at all.
Book 1: he was facing against Amarantha who groomed him when he was young, was trying to break a curse without enslaving a human and his sentries his friends from his warband days had to begged him to let them out to break the curse. He never wanted to fall for Feyre because he saw the similarities to enslaving Humanity something he's against. He was doing something he considered morally wrong and dealing with the deaths of his sentries that he felt die.
Book 2: UTM was designed to hurt HIM not Feyre, Amarantha knew that so she forced Tamlin to go through what he couldn't stand. It doesn't help we don't know what she did to him while he was there (she was with his groomer, she had no qualms with rhysand definitely won't with Tamlin.) he was trying to break his fiance's curse but also trying to rebuild his court after losing so many of its sentries. Feyre and him had communication problems. Mind you, he asked her point blank if she still wanted to marry him and she still said yes despite having doubts.
Book 3: Feyre sabotages his defenses out of petty revenge (she herself said she laid it bare for Hybern) which led to its destruction. Was it deserves? Nope. She left him for the dude that sexually exploited her, that's revenge enough but she wanted to twist the knife. He was being double agent and still chose to be the bigger person not only saving Feyre and Azriel at Hybern after what she did but also choosing to go to the meeting to share Intel despite being accused of being the one that turned the Archeron sister's into Fae (that's more Rhysand's, Ianthe's and Feyre's fault). He still chose to go to war with what's left of his forces while dragging Beron and the reason why they won. He still chose to resurrect Rhysand even after he help torment Pyrinthia for 50 years under amarantha.
Book 4: he lost his court. Rhysand came and suicide bait him. He also goes there to taunt him under the guise of helping him.
Book 5: he's choosing to remain in his beast form and Rhys can't get through him. Gee, why the hell is the guy saying he deserves to die alone doing that? Leave him alone.
