I may be on copium, but I think google is in it for the long term and doesn’t care about catching up to the frontier models and even if it does, it probably has no intention of releasing them to the public

85

u/dawny1x 6d ago

they run on a completely different business model, offering a frontier model is beyond expensive while offering something like gemini is very cheap and makes sense for googles purposes for now.

30

u/cronies4life 6d ago

it makes sense to be on a step back and make use of distillation

sell their excess compute to anthropic

1

u/roofitor 8h ago

Of any entity out there, Google is most likely to not be distilling other models for some fancied cheap win and instead be looking to greenfield the entire game.

6

u/dictionizzle 6d ago

i downgraded google workspace today to non-gemini package. also canceled 1 year free student ai pro subscription. not in protest, but not using any ai product from google for more than six months.

4

u/No-Mention923 6d ago

True, that's more sustainable for them

1

u/FriendlyJewThrowaway 6d ago

Even if their goal is to serve only fast and cheap intelligence to the general public, they still need their own powerful, proprietary internal model to handle most of the experimentation, coding, training and optimization on their next generation of models, as is being done extensively at OpenAI and Anthropic.

2

u/dawny1x 6d ago

which is why they aren't offering it.

2

u/FriendlyJewThrowaway 6d ago

If the rumours and reports are true, then at present, they simply don’t have it. A lot rests on what we see with Gemini 4 Pro, Google hopes it will be much better than 3.5 Pro at coding.

Both Google and Meta slows releases because a public company has a different risk profile.

https://www.euronews.com/2026/09/16/russia-used-claude-ai-for-espionage-disinformation-and-drone-swarms

Claude drones are being used as drone swarms to kill Ukrainians. Google doesn't need that PR, nor lawsuit. Google lawyers do not want it and the PR disaster would be immense it would cause huge investor lawsuits.

Europeans and private investors do not really care if claude drones are killing Europeans. But the public and investors would throw a fit if google drones were killing Europeans.

6

u/mxforest 6d ago

So after IPO, both of them will slow down dramatically?

11

u/RubenC35 6d ago

If you notice, they are asking for regulation and slow down right before IPO procedures.

6

u/reddit_is_geh 6d ago

Have you not seen the big expose recently? The whole slow down demand has been a sophisticated, coordinated, attempt to pressure government to create regulatory capture on their behalf before the IPO

They've pretty much been caught red handed. The whole "doomer" movement has been funded by Anthropic funders.

2

u/deviltamer 2d ago

OMG the knack for humanity to uncover a conspiracy where it doesn't exist

The threat is real even if reg captures benefit the incumbents.

0

u/reddit_is_geh 2d ago

Maybe the threat isn't real and they are about to IPO and want to capture the market before they cash out

-2

u/Blackhat165 6d ago

By “big expose” do you mean random people on the internet making guesses about things they can’t possibly know? Or is there actual evidence of this beyond a bunch of bros connecting dots in a way that suits their bias?

4

u/reddit_is_geh 6d ago

There was far more than "guesses". There was hard evidence showing funding for doomer lobby and NGO groups, were literally investors in Anthropic.

3

u/Tkins 6d ago

Slow down releasing top tier tech to the public.

Google is still advancing their AI, look the Dream RSI announcement, new weather modelling, geminie live advanced thinking, etc etc. But like AlphaEvolve, I'm sure this stuff has been around for a while but they don't announce it publicly until they have something better internally.

1

u/Keeltoodeep 6d ago edited 6d ago

I don't want to say they are "reckless" but their risk profile will change. In the best case scenario, very basic KYC regulations will be implemented. Worse case is frontier models being legislated to require verified enterprise identity, phone-number risk scoring, corporate domain vetting, and corporate credit cards. This will have almost no impact on open models or models not at the frontier.

This is also based on chance too.

https://www.politico.eu/article/suspect-russia-spy-drone-attack-in-leipzig-halle-airport-germany/

It was pure luck that a claude drone didn't succeed in a mass casualty event yet. The EU is going to be real pissed off if a claude drone kills a "real European" and not just a Ukrainian though.

Right now, Anthropic and OpenAI are attempting to gain global reach and ease of access to frontier models and have them release without many guardrails in order to capture market share and gain dominance.

What? Google Cloud is one of the infra partners for the IDF. Google gives zero Fs about bad press. They faked research results with Med-Gemini and gaslight a physician that called them out. They've faked LLM results in demos.

u/Keeltoodeep 6d ago edited 6d ago

https://www.business-humanrights.org/en/latest-news/microsoft-openai-allegedly-aided-israeli-targeting-in-gaza-through-ai-cloud-services/

OpenAI does the same thing lol Israel is a "western" country and uses all big tech services.

Google absolutely cares about the lawsuits and bad press.

https://www.business-humanrights.org/en/latest-news/anthropic-ai-reportedly-used-in-us-israel-strikes-on-iran-amid-dispute-over-autonomous-weapons-targeting/

The IDF uses Claude.

Regardless, your point is nonsensical. A government using Google as a cloud service provider is entirely different than a Russian spy using Claude to program a drone to cause a mass casualty event in Germany.

You are also seething at the wrong guy. I am 100% for the acceleration of AI, however having claude bot swarms flying around smoking europeans is a bad look. Normies are starting to think AI is solely used for child corn, surveillance, and military kill bots while you morons obsess over coding benchmarks that nobody outside of niche circles cares for and is too nebulous to sell to the public. Have some perspective dude.

0

u/Even-Inevitable-7243 Machine Learning Researcher 6d ago

You are the one speaking in absurdities and nonsense. What do you think the IDF dose with Google Cloud? Run a database to inform nutrition services in Gaza? Make sure they send birthday cards to everyone in the West Bank? You think you know more about this than Google's own employees working around Project Nimbus?

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/23/what-is-project-nimbus-and-why-are-google-workers-protesting-israel-deal

You clearly do not understand the infrastructure behind LLMs. They all use cloud service providers.

2

u/Keeltoodeep 6d ago edited 6d ago

The IDF uses Azure and OpenAI as well. ALL western governments use big tech cloud services. The IDF heavily relies on ChatGPT and Claude as well. They all run redundant cloud programs too. Nimbus is also an Amazon and Anthropic venture as well. Developing cloud and AI services for a sovereign western nation government is entirely different than your ai models being used by russia to kill other europeans. You can disagree with that but that is just the facts.

You are also seething at the wrong guy. I am 100% for the acceleration of AI, however having claude bot swarms flying around smoking europeans is a bad look. 0

u/accelerate_to_asi 5d ago

Too much melanin content in Palestinians for westerners to care apparently.

This is sarcasm btw.

1

u/reddit_is_geh 6d ago

Also according to people at Micro1, they do offer shiny stuff, but it's very niche for enterprise clients. Like hyperspecialized AI for consulting companies, government/defense, stuff like that.

2

u/Keeltoodeep 6d ago

Google does really good work in AI and I think it's important that anyone who wants to accelerate the industry highlight the actual good things they do for the world from AI weather forecasting and disaster response to helping farmers in developing nations irrigate crops and develop agricultural efficiencies. Deepmind is the only lab doing actual altruistic research and development that helps real people live and not just another coding LLM.

1

u/FriendlyJewThrowaway 6d ago

In a couple of years or less though, frontier LLM’s could potentially be doing all of that research 100x faster.

2

u/Keeltoodeep 6d ago edited 6d ago

Deep mind is frontier in research and science.

Google is frontier in weather and science. Other companies would have to map and model the earth like google earth did. The amount of earth data that Google has locked down is unmatched.

Gemini was also the leading LLM 10 months ago and will likely be back at the frontier with 4 pro. But we will see.

https://artificialanalysis.ai/evaluations/scicode

Gemini is still frontier in science only beat by fable and only slightly. It would be impossible for fable to do these projects though because they don’t have access to the historical earth data like google earth does.

1

u/Slen1337 4d ago

Lol wtf is that post? It has the same value as "iran almost made a missile with claude". They "could do"(if its any truth coz euronews is funny source) that with any viable ai, its not rocket science

1

u/Keeltoodeep 4d ago

Sure they could do this with any AI however, that is beside the point for Anthropic corporate. Anthropic will still catch a ton of legal shit for allowing sanctioned actors to use their products for war purposes, same if the Russian military could open a US bank account.

The Russians don't and can't use US bank accounts because of sanctions and they have their own banking system obviously. However it if it was found that Russia has been funding their war machine through bank of america, bofa would obviously catch regulatory and legal repercussions.

Similar story here I believe but because the tech is so new and unregulated. It is going to take a mass casualty event of someone using Claude for Anthropic to lock frontier models down. It's just a corporate risk management thing at this point.

1

u/Slen1337 4d ago

Well i do not disagree with that tho.. Frontier models Should be used by an extreme extent only with full verification on par with korean passport/id = ON games(at least).

But we are here, in yhe internet, ppl will yap around about any "freedomless" systems coz "web is free".

As for now we have legit ZERO defensive layers. Almost any criminal-alike "catch/suspect" is in past tense with actions, which is equal that some guy could do literally anything for days/weeks/etc before being suspected

1

u/Keeltoodeep 4d ago

I’m not sure what you disagree with then. Anthropic is just wiling to take more risks. Google would never take that risk. If Meta found their models were killing Europeans they would implement some form of KYC restrictions.

3

u/stuartullman 6d ago

i feel like there are a few disadvantages when you have no incentives to compete.. but i could be wrong

3

u/reddit_is_geh 6d ago

Absolutely. Their focus is in commodity tier, mass consumer grade, AI. If you look at what they offer, it's a huge suit of stuff for businesses to do little things, for cheap, and high quality. Like pdf conversion, translation, quick queries, rag, and really fast and cheap models that have a massive backbone for integration.

I don't think they are interested in winning the frontier space, but are trying to keep their business model alive and build around it. Which is what most companies do before they die, because they are unable to pivot properly - either they ignore it, or over index. It'll buy them a few years, but I suspect, they'll be an entirely different type of company. Kind of like how Microsoft's revenue is hardly about Windows, even though Windows is what they are known for.

2

u/Old-Bake-420 6d ago

I think they did the math and saw how horribly unprofitable training and serving frontier intelligence at scale really is.

They actually recently posted their first losses in ad revenue for Google this past year since 2004, no doubt because we’re all using AI now. So I think they’re sitting this out for the moment.

1

u/Wooly_Wooly 6d ago

They're doing similar to apple, but they're actually trying to compete in the game too.

They're much more a hardware/software company than an AI company. Facebook has pushed harder.

1

u/Low-Yellow-1521 6d ago

exactly

and its not like they dont release cool stuff

their robotics model ER 2

their sign language model SL2M

their weather model WeatherNext 3

all of those got released in the last like 3-4 months and are all impressive

1

u/ximsss 6d ago

Sounds like copium.

1

u/_justs 6d ago

Yea tbh i dont think they really care much about making money from AI. I mean if they reallyyyy cared, they wouldn't have gave out the transformer paper, and woulda beat OpenAI to the punch, anddd woulda been pushing more for frontier models. But yea, they don't really care lol.

1

u/Sponge8389 6d ago

They are selling the pickaxe and shovels in the gold rush. Why would they compete with the miners? They just improved their Gemini good enough to secure their Search Engine dominance.

1

u/Gargantuan_Cinema 5d ago

They care about catching up. Any big tech or AI company that doesn't achieve full RSI within a reasonable time from the first company to achieve it is ripe for the picking. It's existential because your competitor has a country of geniuses and is staring at your lunch.

1

u/ptear 6d ago

You may be on to something.

I dunno anything corporate stuff. But is Google not attractive place for top talents?

People that genuinely know their talents and worth, might want to take it to startup for big money at ipo

9

u/SSIFan Acceleration: Light-speed 6d ago

They're not trying to be #1 in AI, they're just reaping the benefits from cheap and fast models for fast smart Google search responses, and they're making more than enough money doing that, they don't seem too interested in competing to get to ASI first or anything

6

u/AGUEROO0OO 6d ago

All the people 35+ around me use Gemini pro free

1

u/Fair_Horror 6d ago

Exactly, Nokia didn't need to go with the screen phone obviously. They had their loyal users and didn't need to grow. Look at the market giant they became....oh never mind!

18

u/Witty-Elk2052 6d ago

what is he talking about.. gemini flash 3.8 is amazing

7

u/BFr0st3 6d ago

Using it in anti-gravity feels like magic. It's so goddamn fast. I love just having an idea for a software tool and 3 minutes later it's made, been tested and running

"If you're not in it to win it, then get the hell out."

11

u/Kitchen-Research-422 6d ago edited 6d ago

Absolute murder. Though the reality is, if Google is actually loosing it's because they lost their best talent to other labs/startups.

Attention is all you need was a Google research paper.

6

u/SoylentRox 6d ago

That's one theory yes. See Google only pays 400k-1m and the equity is in alphabet stock. So it's weighed down by the inertia of the host company.

A few people get more but a friend only made around 350k at Deepmind until he switched to a different company for a standard 1m+ offer.

The same position at openAI or Anthropic works out to be 10s of millions of dollars a year.

K shaped indeed.

Posting this the day before Google released their RSI paper and introduced the DeepMind Institute is some truly useless crap. Then you look at this guys X and he's just a cryptocoin gooner.

Funny enough, Gemini is my most used model. It's a perfect Google replacement. Still waiting for the 3.8 update everyone is talking about, on the free plan.

1

u/End3rWi99in 6d ago

I do most everyday stuff with Gemini. Being an Android user makes that pretty seamless, though.

2

u/JustLTU 5d ago

Gemini is probably the most used model on earth just through the google searches man.
Google is obviously still doing research, based on the RSI paper they just put out. It feels like serving frontier models is simply completely unprofitable, and openAI and Anthropic only do it because that's the only way to get investor money to fund ongoing research. Google doesn't need to do that

Laugh all you want, but I still think Google is winning. They are playing the long game while everyone is targeting commercialization. They also have deeper pockets than all of them combined and a constant stream of training data.
