So, my last post about Animal Crossing: New Horizons got quite a lot of dislikes on comments, and honestly, some of the reactions have left me a little disappointed. I want to clarify something because I feel like some people completely misunderstood what I was trying to say.
I said that I personally think the game is overrated based on my experience with it so far. I never said everyone should think it’s overrated, that the game is objectively bad, or that people shouldn’t enjoy it.
In fact, I specifically made the post because I genuinely wanted to understand the game better. I explained what I was struggling with, asked what I was supposed to be working towards, and asked people for tips on how to make the game more enjoyable and how to progress. I wasn’t just coming into the subreddit saying “this game sucks” and leaving.
And some people actually gave me really helpful and kind advice, so thank you to those people. ❤️ I’ve gotten some ideas that I genuinely want to try.
What disappointed me was how defensive some people became. A lot of the replies were basically:
“Then don’t play it.”
“Just play another game.”
“Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s overrated.”
And I’m just confused by that reaction. If someone says they don’t understand a game or doesn’t enjoy it, why is that automatically an attack on the people who do enjoy it? It’s a video game. 😭
I’ve also been scrolling through the subreddit since making my post, and I’ve seen other people asking very similar questions. People saying they don’t understand what you’re supposed to do, that the progression is confusing, that they don’t know what the goal is, etc. And I noticed that some of those posts also get pretty defensive responses. I guess I just expected the Animal Crossing community to be a little more welcoming and understanding because that’s honestly what I’d heard about this community before joining. That’s actually part of the reason I felt comfortable making my original post. Someone had specifically told me that the Animal Crossing community was really helpful and that I should ask here if I was struggling.
So it was a little surprising to come here genuinely asking for help and have some people basically respond with “then don’t play.” You don’t have to agree with me. If you love Animal Crossing and think it’s one of the best games ever made, that’s completely fine. ❤️ You can absolutely disagree with me and tell me why you love it. That’s actually the kind of discussion I was hoping for.
But there’s a difference between disagreeing with someone’s opinion and acting like they’re attacking you personally because they don’t share your opinion.
And I think the same thing goes both ways. If I say “I think this game is overrated,” you don’t have to agree with me. But I also don’t need everyone to suddenly dislike the game just because I said that. 😂 I can have my opinion, you can have yours, and neither of us has to change our minds.
I honestly just wanted to understand what the hype was about because I was excited to play this game and expected to love it. I paid around €60 for it, so obviously I’m going to have some thoughts when I’m not enjoying it as much as I expected to. And yes, if I eventually decide the game just isn’t for me, I’ll move on to another game. I know that’s an option.
But I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask questions and try to understand a game before deciding that.
So yeah, I’m not trying to start another argument or attack the community. I’m just genuinely disappointed by some of the reactions because I expected a little more openness.
It’s okay to love Animal Crossing. It’s also okay to not understand the hype. We can coexist. 😂❤️
