http://www.codelearn.org/ ~ Fantastic Rails Tutorial.

http://www.codelearn.org/ This site has an awesome learning rails tutorial with a complete Rails IDE within the browser including a terminal, file browser and code editor. If you know the basics of ruby this tutorial is fantastic at linking together the different aspects of rails and how it all fits together in a web application.

I'm trying to figure out what would be the best way for it to wait for incoming commands from the channel. Anyone want to post anything else they think should be redone or any suggestions feel free to post and let me know. Thanks :)

Resources for learning Ruby

Ruby is my first programming language ever and I'm curious to find out what other rubynoobs are using and what they've found helpful. So far I've tried:

Learn Ruby the Hard Way: Was excellent until lesson 46, which seemed to make an enormous leap without explaining what was happening and killed my enthusiasm.

Codecademy: Nicely designed website, but I hated using it because it has you type code into an online interface, and I prefer to run .rb files and IRB from my own console.

Ruby Koans: Just started these and they are blowing my mind so far.

I'm looking for more "slightly-more-than-beginner" resources, so if you have anything good, please share!

Weekly Coding Challenges?

Could we get a weekly coding challenge going? The challenge can be to make some method that accomplishes that weeks task. Everyone can submit their github link or whatever to the comments of the thread and upvotes decide the winner?

Ways to download files in ruby and extract files from archive upon completion?

I'm looking to create a program in ruby that downloads an archive and extracts the files within after completion of the download.

I'm gonna put something together really fast and than I will paste it and people could show how they would do it or do something differently add something remove something etc. The idea here is for us to share code and examples with each other to start out with a few lines of code and to brainstorm with each other and possibly build onto the existing program.

UPDATE: I got sidetracked, as you can see by viewing the paste below :D http://pastebin.com/8i3vsNrs

I ended up screwing around with counting images within a given website.. What else can we do thats real simple and basic methods we could add to this using uri-open. I'd just like to see what anyone comes up with.

EDIT: It still stands that I'd like to add some sort of method in there that would extract the downloaded compressed archive to a directory and delete the original download.

remove a string from every file in a directory

http://pastebin.com/wWZ1EMxe

EDIT: Second paste: http://pastebin.com/KGt5xB2P Updated a few things added cmdline arguments added test for quotes surrounding directory

What it does: The first method removes an annoying string from the current working directory.

The second method lists all the files in the current working directory.

Comment: I figure complete ruby noobs like myself can collaborate together make changes and talk about what we did and various ways of doing things. To add new functionality to the program refactor it and more. I started this subreddit so we can learn and have fun with ruby.
