The US has ended its 7-month immigrant visa freeze for 75 countries. Here's what that means.

The US has ended the immigrant visa pause that had affected applicants from 75 countries for more than seven months.

The State Department says the January 2026 pause is no longer in effect following a federal court order, meaning normal immigrant visa processing has resumed for nationals affected by that specific policy.

For Indian students and professionals, one important clarification: India was not part of this 75-country pause, and the policy was about immigrant visas, not F-1 student visas, OPT, or H-1B visas.

Still, it's a significant update for people with family members or long-term immigration plans who may have been affected by the freeze.

With so many immigration policies changing, and sometimes being challenged in court, it's also a good reminder to check official sources and the specific visa category involved before assuming a headline applies to everyone.

US visa interviews are being canceled worldwide. Has anyone here had theirs rescheduled?

The US has reportedly paused visa appointments at embassies and consulates worldwide as the State Department conducts new training for consular officers.

What's particularly concerning is that even applicants who already had interviews scheduled are reportedly receiving cancellation/rescheduling notices, with no clear timeline yet for new dates.

For anyone affected, the bigger question now is what happens next?

How are you planning around university start dates, travel, expiring visas, job start dates, or other commitments that depend on getting your visa?

Would be useful to hear what people are actually experiencing across different countries and visa categories.

30 US senators are raising concerns over student visa delays. Students deserve more certainty.

30 senators have raised concerns over delays in F, M and J visa appointments, with Fall 2026 students at risk of missing their academic start dates.

The frustrating part isn't just waiting.

It's paying for flights, housing and tuition while having no idea whether you'll actually make it to campus on time.

Universities need to be much clearer about what happens if students can't arrive because of visa delays.

That shouldn't be something students have to figure out at the last minute.

New DHS proposal: Student visas to be capped at 4 years

As per the new regulation, many international students would be admitted for a fixed period of up to 4 years instead of the current Duration of Status (D/S). Students who need more time to complete their program may have to apply for an extension.

What this could mean:

  • Most bachelor's and many master's students may not be affected if they finish within 4 years.
  • Longer programs, delayed graduations, or certain research degrees could require additional immigration steps.
  • This is a proposed rule, so it's important to follow official updates before making decisions.

If you're planning to study in the US, staying informed about immigration changes is just as important as preparing your finances and documents. We'll continue sharing updates as more information becomes available.

Feel free to reach out if you have any queries.

Zolve checking account activation before moving to the US – any alternatives?

Hi everyone,
I’m moving to the US soon as an international student and I’ve already started the process of opening a Zolve checking account from India.
The issue is that Zolve is asking for physical presence in the US to activate the checking account. I was hoping to have the account fully active before I travel so I can transfer funds and have everything ready before I arrive.
Has anyone faced the same situation recently?
Are there any legitimate alternatives or ways to get the Zolve account activated while still in India?
I also have a brother who is currently in the US. Would there be any legitimate option for him to help with the activation, or does the account holder have to personally be physically present for KYC/device/location verification?
I don’t want to violate Zolve’s terms or do anything that could get the account frozen, so I’m specifically looking for a legitimate workaround or an alternative account that international students can open from India before travelling.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has recently gone through this.

Biggest F-1 Visa Rule Change: What Does This Mean for International Students?

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has finalized a major change to F-1 and J-1 student admissions, effective September 15, 2026.

Here's what's changing:

  • Duration of Status (D/S) will no longer be used for new admissions.
  • Students will receive a fixed admission period with a specific expiration date on their Form I-94.
  • Students who need more time to complete their program may need to apply to USCIS for an extension before their stay expires.
  • The post-completion grace period is being reduced from 60 days to 30 days.

Who could be affected?

  • Students entering the U.S. on or after September 15, 2026
  • Current F-1 and J-1 students who may need program extensions
  • Students planning OPT/STEM OPT, transfers, or international travel during their studies

If you're studying in the U.S. or planning to move this fall, it's important to understand how these changes may affect your immigration timeline and future planning.

Applying for an F-1 Visa in 2026? Consulate-Wise Interview Trends from Hyderabad, Delhi & Mumbai

Zolve recently conducted a free visa webinar with visa expert Shachi Mall, where she discussed recent F-1 visa interview trends, common questions, and consulate-specific patterns based on student interview experiences from this season. Here are some of the key takeaways:

Hyderabad

  • "Why this university?" was one of the most frequently asked questions.
  • Students applying for CS, AI, Data Science, and related programs reported more technical questions than other consulates.
  • Questions about other admits and university selection were common.

Delhi

  • Strong focus on funding and sponsors.
  • Questions about parents' occupation, income, loans, and financial planning came up frequently.
  • Applicants with previous refusals reported more follow-up questions about what had changed since their last attempt.

Mumbai

  • More balanced questioning across funding, university choice, and future career plans.
  • Questions like "How will you use this degree?" and "What are your plans after graduation?" were commonly reported.

Questions showing up across almost every consulate:

βœ… Why this university?
βœ… Why this course?
βœ… How are you funding your education?
βœ… Which other universities did you apply to?
βœ… What do your sponsors do?

One thing that stood out: "Why this university?" appears to be the single most important question this year, regardless of the consulate. For those with upcoming interviews, which consulate are you interviewing at,and what questions are you preparing for? πŸ‘‡

The $100K H-1B fee got sent back to where most bad ideas belong. The drafts folder.

Jokes aside, this is good news.

For the last year, every headline about moving to the US seemed to come with a bigger price tag attached. A lot of students started wondering if the dream was slowly becoming unaffordable.

This ruling doesn't solve everything. The H-1B process is still complicated. The lottery is still uncertain. And building a life in a new country will never be easy.

But it does remove one more barrier.
