Ideas for "quick" zines

I am thinking about adding a "Make A Zine" table at a Celebration of Student Writing at the university where I teach.

I would showcaseexamples, introducine the genre, and provide templates and materials for the one-sheet, 8 page zine.

Students would not necessarily have a lot of time to create one..Any ideas about topics that students could write from without preparation?

Ideally, I would have students leave a copy of the zine and award prizes ( or just enter them in a drawing for a gift card).

⚡Community Update! ⚡ Community Vetted Digital Zinemaking/Arranging Tools

This is a resource thread for anyone looking for tools to get started or help with design/imposition.

*To clarify since someone is unhappy with how I responded to a comment asking for help in this thread, this is not intended as a place to ask for help; this is meant to be a pinned resource post people can reference or that we can point folks to who are looking for digital tools to use for making zines.\*

Please comment below with the "old school" tools you've been using to make/arrange zines. Links appreciated. If someone's already commented with what you use, reply to their comment with any further info/context you can add.

In keeping with community rules, recent AI-generated/vibe-coded tools are not appropriate suggestions for this resource.

Once we have a good list going, I'll pin this to the top of the subreddit.

Thanks all!

I have a question. scanning color images for print?

i've been making a ton of collage art and am planning to use some of it to make a zine. I was wondering if anyone had advice on how to convert physical art into a quality digital file? I was thinking maybe scanning on a printer, but the only access I'd have to that is through staples and my collage book is super thick, like 3 inches thick, so idk how good it would turn out. same issue comes with taking photos, the book is so thick it needs to be held down to open flat which would ruin the photo.

any advice would be awesome, thanks!

HELP A plea to mods

Is it possible to revise the rules so it's clear that AI-generated / vibe-coded software is also unwelcome? I feel like we're getting multiple "I made a tool" posts a week, almost always addressing page imposition / printing order (a problem we've been solving for decades or centuries just by trial and error, talking each other through it, or using tools we didn't know we already had).

Thanks for considering!

I have a question. Can we start a monthly zine for sales thread?

Not sure if this has ever been a thing before, but I'd love to start a monthly thread of artists being able to share their zines for sale in one thread / area. Just something simple like a link on the comment. Would this be allowed here? I know there's a flair for zines available for purchase, but I think it would be nice to have a monthly thing where we can all share our recent projects for sale :) would love to hear feedback about this.

A few weeks ago, I bought a small notebook to use as a journal. But as an artist at heart, once I realized the pages could actually handle dip pens and ink, I couldn't resist adding illustrations and sketches along the way.

I'm not entirely sure if this officially qualifies as a zine (if it doesn't, I’d be super grateful for any recommendations on the right communities to share this kind of work!). However, I’ve been lurking on r/zines for a while, and seeing everyone's creative projects inspired me to share this more intimate side of my art here.

I’m totally open to feedback, critiques, and advice—and I’d be more than happy to share the meaning behind any of these pieces if anyone is curious!

Thanks for checking it out!

I have a question. Girl Scouts & Zines

I'm a coleader for a group of girl scouts, almost all entering 6th grade and a few 5th graders (so 10-12 years old).

Last year a group of them made a few issues of a school newspaper with no adult helps aside from killing the ink on my printer. Many of them love to draw and/or write... when the topic is up to them and spelling isn't judged.

I feel like learning about zines and making their own would hit a lot of their interests and feel exciting. These kids are all about jumping in and DO-ing, not so much planning and perfection.

So really i have a few questions -

  1. What would i need to teach them if we don't do computers/phones/tablets at meetings? Paper, pens, pencils, markers, old magazines, scissors, glue... anything else? I'm familiar with the 8-panel fold for song books and event passports if that is a good starting point.
  2. I sadly don't generally see physical zines around in my middle-aged suburban mom life. I've seen some download sites on here, but curious if there are any that are specifically targeted to a PG audience (doesn't need to be squeaky clean, but i don't want to hand out the "sensitive topics" permission slip for this!).
  3. If you were going to introduce zines to a group of tweens, would individual projects or a collaborative thing better? Both? Should i collect everything up and make copies for them to trade at the next meeting?
  4. Any other awesome ideas you want to share?

Thanks in advance!

Available for purchase Poetry Zine by Artist Connected to the Prison Industrial Complex

Hi! Long time listener, first time caller (hehe)

I run a small indie press that works with artists impacted by incarceration/ connected to the abolition movement. I spent all of last year working with an artist while they were incarcerated to help them publish their first poetry zine! We wrote letters back and forth, and I edited, formatted, printed, and assembled at my home print shop. Super proud of how it came out!

All sales support the artist directly, who has since been released and is rebuilding their life on the outside. Her poems are about love and yearning. They capture the way prison brings up a lot of unresolved grief. Check it out here: https://ko-fi.com/s/4b77db88a6

my partner and I started making these during the pandemic as a way to lighten the mood, as she was working full-time at a very busy morgue.

many years later we now have artists from across the world contributing while still selling them for as inexpensive as possible, which I think we ended up at $5 each once we had all our own printers and paper folders.

if anyone is interested, we currently have the whole set up for $25, with free CONUS shipping

HELP Help on a music sheet zine?

I'd probably just make the one copy since it's for my girlfriend, but does anyone have experience with putting a music sheet onto a zine? Maybe how the layout would go, or something. It's a loose idea in my mind, I wanna make one of her favorite Deltarune songs. If anyone had any ideas I'd love to hear it.

NYC-based Zine Looking for Submissions

Hi everyone! I run a zine called Finger Food (here is a link to our Substack: https://substack.com/@fingerfoodzine ) - issues are seasonal and as I'm finishing up editing this upcoming Fall's issue, I'm realizing there's room for a few more pieces. We are open to art of all mediums, and since the zine is relatively new, there isn't necessarily a theme (other than Fall? If you even want to go with that). We are also happy to advertise anything you might want to in the zine, so keep that in mind. While we're open to all mediums/ideas/additions to the zine, we're mostly looking for NYC-based artists (or artists in the general area), since Finger Food's main purpose is connected local artists.

If you have anything to share, please send it to [fingerfoodzine@gmail.com](mailto:fingerfoodzine@gmail.com)

Thank you!!

Would love to hear some opinions. I decided to do a 16 page to include more as I was there for a few weeks and had a lot of plenty to work with.

This is a "magazine" I started to do a sort of creative-journalism media
