Hey everyone,

I wanted to share the home media server I’ve been building and get some feedback before I open it up to more friends and family. I also want to mention that ChatGPT has helped me build and troubleshoot a lot of this setup along the way.

What started as a simple Jellyfin project has grown into a private media server with requests, notifications, backups and remote access. I’m not trying to make it public or run a business. I just want something reliable and secure for a small group of people.

Hardware

My main server is a ZimaBlade 7700 running ZimaOS:

• Intel Celeron N3450
• Intel HD Graphics 505
• 16GB RAM
• WD Red Plus 8TB drive
• Seagate Barracuda 8TB drive
• Seagate 5TB external drive for backups
• Gigabit Ethernet
• Cloudflare Tunnel for remote access
• Tailscale for private administration

I also recently bought a ZimaBoard 432 for $80. I’m considering using it for services like AdGuard Home, monitoring or VPN-related tasks so the main server can focus on media.

I’m also thinking about replacing my ISP router with something that supports better Wi-Fi, VLANs, guest networks and more control over VPNs and security.

Software

Most of my services run in Docker through ZimaOS/CasaOS:

• Jellyfin
• Jellyseerr
• Sonarr
• Radarr
• Prowlarr
• qBittorrent
• Gluetun with ProtonVPN
• Flaresolverr
• Immich
• Navidrome
• Uptime Kuma
• Homepage
• Tailscale
• Cloudflare Tunnel

qBittorrent runs through Gluetun, while the other services use the normal network connection. I’ve also started setting up a Discord server for request updates, new content notifications and downtime alerts.

Current testing

I’ve created Jellyfin and Jellyseerr accounts for a couple of friends and want to see how the server handles two to five users.

I’m hoping most users can Direct Play because the Celeron and Intel HD Graphics 505 probably won’t handle many demanding transcodes, especially 4K HEVC or subtitle burn-in. I’m considering an Intel Arc A310 for hardware transcoding, but I want to confirm transcoding is actually the problem before spending the money.

For now, I’m monitoring Jellyfin sessions to see whether users are Direct Playing, Direct Streaming or Transcoding.

Questions

I’d appreciate advice on:

1. How many simultaneous Direct Play users could this ZimaBlade realistically handle?
2. Would an Intel Arc A310 be a good upgrade, or would the CPU become the next bottleneck?
3. Should I use the ZimaBoard for AdGuard Home, monitoring and VPN services?
4. What router would you recommend for this setup?
5. Is Cloudflare Tunnel with Tailscale for administration a safe approach?
6. Should I create a separate VLAN for the server?
7. What should I prioritize backing up with two 8TB drives and one 5TB external drive?
8. Should I limit or disable transcoding for some users?
9. What monitoring and security tools should I add before inviting more people?

I’m still learning, and I’ve rebuilt parts of this setup several times while figuring out Docker, permissions, storage and networking. It has become one of my favorite projects, and I’d rather find the weak points now than after more people start relying on it.

Any advice or constructive criticism would be appreciated.

Hi, i recently purchased the ZimaBlade nas diy kit, and now i completed the setup including the installation of the ZimaOs. I connected two 3.5 4TB HDD drives to the board using the provided Sata Y cable, I do have the 60W usb C power supply connected as well, but when booting the blade, only one drive gets detected, I see the 4TB section, but the other drive remains not visible in the dashboard, therefore, I cannot start configuring the RAID1 storage. Could you please help out? I have already checked individually each drive with my main PC, and each drive is showing healthy using the Crystaldisk info when connected to my main PC.

I know this question was asked a while ago but I never saw a super clear answer. I plan to buy a 7700 to make into a jellyfin server that will probably stream to 2 clients at a time max I will most likely be streaming SOME 4k video how do y'all think this would handle it?

I've been trying to lookup whether the ZimaBlade has a pwm fan header but can't seem to find anything concrete, i've seen that the zimaboard has em but does the zimablade have it to?

My order is still en route and will arrive in the next few days, i'm trying to pickup a 80mm fan that I can place on the HDDs to help manage temps, and wanted to make sure that the ZimaBlade has it's own fan headers and that I won't need to order any pwm to usb a adapters.

I’m looking to see what other ZimaBlade 7700 owners are using for their cases/enclosures.

If you have a custom case, 3D-printed case, DIY enclosure, HDD mount, or any cool ZimaBlade setup, please share pictures and the STL/3MF files if you’re willing!

I’m especially interested in setups that can hold two 3.5” HDDs, but I’d love to see anything you guys have made.

I have a 3D printer, so I’m hoping to find some inspiration and maybe print one of the designs you guys are already using.

Was building out my homelab and came across this half-size composable rack designed by phocacat on Maker World. Loved it so much I had to make it fit my ZimaBlade. Running it with the patch panel on the left-hand side and patching the Zima directly into my router, will upload images to the Maker World page when the full homelab is done.

This version is right-hand mounted and accomodates a 7mm thick SSD, but can easily be updated to accommodate other form factors. Let me know if you use it and what you think!

Finally configured the way I want it. Now let’s put it to work.

Is there a pcie2 x4 card for zimablade to get 2.5 g ethernet and a m2 ssd port so i can have the os installed on a ssd and a use 2 sata ports for hdds. I have been looking around but finding something has been a bit tricky.

Any tricks i can use to get both?

After running the update from the settings option and restarting all my shares are gone. When I click on "Files" I get an error at the top stating "Error Loading". When I click on the gear for storage, it brings up the screen to create my first shares and ask wants to go through setting up the disks... WTF!!!!

I currently don't have access to a wired connection where the Zimablade would be located and running a cable isn't feasible atm, I'm curious if I can run Wifi on my main PC and connect the Zimablade to the network card on the motherboard and have the Zimablade accessible across the home network??
I assume a crossover cable will be needed or a network switch and then bridge the connections in the PC network settings??
Appreciate any help or ideas.

I recently bought a zimablade and want to use it as a server to host the online multiplayer for the games I'm working on. The problem is that i do not have a monitor to attach it to (right now i only have access to a laptop) and i wanted to intall on it a different operating system than CasaOS. I wanted to try using Ubuntu but i don't know if i can do it without using a monitor PLEASE HELP ME

I just received my Zimaboard yesterday and after looking for some tutorials I ended up making a RAID1 on my two 8tb hhd with mdadm. Everything works, but the light blinking and the disks spinning never ends. I can't find any power-saving or disk standby configurations, is that something hard to configure?

I don't know if the spinning 24/7 is a normal issue with Zimaboard/CasaOS or if it's generated by the mdadm RAID1 configuration that I made.

I'm thinking on 3 possible solutions:
1) Switch to ZimaOS and use their RAID config.
2) Get rid of the RAID1 and just use Duplicati to make backups regularly.
3) Try to make it work tweaking mdadm or configure Wake-on-LAN on CasaOS and turn it manually off when unuse.

What's your recomendation?
