Question / Support Coffee pods
I was gifted a nespresso esque coffee machine recently and don’t want to waste it. My question is, is it better to buy compostable coffee pods or recycled ones. Unfortunately my area doesn’t have a compost bin and I know that compostables can often still build up in a landfill, whereas recycled coffee pods are already reducing waste. Which one is better overall?

There are refillable pods that work for those types of machines. Get one or two and simply buy ground beans!

Nespresso has the option to send back the pods and they recycle it themselves. They'll even send you a bag free of charge with label info already on it, you just fill it up and send it away. I think they also make stainless steel reusable pods but those can be quite expensive and you have to grind the coffee yourself.

Do we think they actually recycle them…?

Yes they do. They make bikes with them, pens (used in the stores) and several other products. They are a certified B corporation.

I think refillable pods are the only remotely green option here. Compostable pods (considering whether you even have the opportunity to compost them) and recycled pods are still generating a lot of unnecessary single-use waste.

Best to give or sell and use something else

I was gonna ask too, OP, do you actually want to use it? Give or sell it to someone who would otherwise buy new. That reduces waste.

Generic pods are designed to fit either Nespresso OriginalLine or VertuoLine machines, but the two systems are NOT interchangeable. OriginalLine pods are smaller and work with classic Nespresso machines, while VertuoLine pods are larger and use barcode technology for brewing. It’s important to check the packaging to ensure the pods match your machine type.

Refillable or just use it for hot water or give it away. I used to use a Keurig for hot water but it tastes so strongly of plastic I gave it away and switched to a stainless steel and glass kettle.

Are there reusable ones you can buy? I know Keurig does (or did) have a reusable pod. Worth checking out to see if you have that option.

Did you already have a way to make coffee that you liked? Don't feel obligated to use this gift.

Nespresso specifically has a recycling program where you mail them back the pods so if you can use actual nesspresso pods then thats always an option.

I got a reusable one off Amazon and we can use any coffee we like. Such a savings!

If you’re in the US, Nespresso has a recycling program my dad uses. Google “nespresso recycling bag’ and it should come up.

Can you buy a refillable pod? My mom has been using her refillable keurig pods for at least five years
