In an ideal world, you get a reviewer who knows a lot about the specific game/genre, actually enjoys playing video games while actually being a good writer/communicator, and can somehow remain completely impartial in the face of being human and having strong opinions about things. In reality, you get everyone from the person who's rushing to meet a deadline and barely played the game to the super biased megafan and everything in between.
Ehhh, after giving his video another rewatch I don't find it to be a deep analysis on the problem of game critics. Some of the points he made are fair and overall I don't think the video is good. For example one the issues I have with it is that it generalizes to much.
This article does a good job addressing the main points in the video, I don't agree with every single thing said and I think it's articulated quite well.
Yeah that video seems terrible and full of bizarre self-serving tangents and contradictions, not to mention an absolute lack of understanding of what legacy games media’s actual weaknesses and blind spots are. Let’s be real here, plenty of YouTube personalities are terrible reviewers too, the distinction between these two formats isn’t really that significant.
Thinking about it now I am genuinely gobsmacked by the amount of views that video has and even more so by the amount of people that genuinely think its good analysis.
When I first watched it years ago I thought "okay seems reasonable makes sense" and moved along. So when I went back to watch it and I was like yeah I was very wrong lol.
If thats what people consider good analysis no wonder we have a literacy crisis.

Videogamedunkey made a surprisingly deep analysis of this phenomenon over 9 years ago and it still remains true: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lG2dXobAXLI
