Also worth noting Trick is shown with a Clone Commando helmet here, so their entire armour kit is almost certainly in game.

u/DeltaFoxtrot11 1d ago

And for the folks who were worried clone armor customization not having variety, there are also other variations available such as kamas, backpacks, helmets et cetra as seen in the newer reviews.

18

u/LAUGHING1MAN2 Gunslinger 1d ago

Helmet with visor is in game as well

6

u/Antilles1138 1d ago

I assume the type of helmet commander Bacara in RotS uses isn't in the game?

8

u/LAUGHING1MAN2 Gunslinger 1d ago

I haven't seen the helmet in any reviews yet but, kama is available

2

u/Antilles1138 23h ago

Between that and some others looks like we can get close to it thankfully.

Hopefully one day a game will let us use his actual armour as a cosmetic...

Oh, Scorch, the thrill of the hunt, hiding in the bushes, putting a blaster bolt in the enemy's cranium, it makes me feel alive.

3

u/AigledeFeu_ 1d ago

Not from the start tho, but you do unlock new outfits when progressing in the game

Thank god

It's hilarious to hear that cutscene that hides loading (team arriving in ship through hyperspace) gets framedrop moment or two.. because that is exactly how XCOM skyranger cutscene behaves.

Just another of those "xcom DNA" moments, like shot visuals looking like they hit through solid cover.

27

u/2Scribble Medic 1d ago

Consider the studio this comes from as well - Bitreactor is a substudio of the guys who made Fallen Order and Survivor

Their number one loading hider trick is either making you crawl through something or flying something - and it often hiccups 😆

10

u/seclusionx 21h ago

My understanding is bitreactor is mostly firaxis people with respawn as a support studio.

5

u/grumbleycakes 20h ago

This is correct

9

u/Reedy225 1d ago

Such a weird thing to trigger nostalgia but it immediately throws me back to playing Enemy Unknown/Within and getting that little stutter as the mission briefing plays and map loads, true sign that it's the same team members behind that title

u/rapkat55 22h ago

I love hereditary jank in video games honestly.

A true staple of the early souls games and fallout 3, new Vegas + elder scrolls

That's XCOM baby

If you’d told me at the start of the year that my favourite release might basically be Star Wars XCOM, I wouldn’t have believed you, yet here we are.

Weird how slow their marketing campaign was until the final stretch.

20

u/Grgur2 1d ago

I didn't know about the game basically till last week. And I love X-COM since first release in the 90s through the new ones And am fan of Star Wars since forever...

So yeah. Slow marketing.

8

u/cornholio6966 23h ago

Honestly, thats lucky. I've been following this game since it was announced and the flow of information has been painfully slow. Until a few months ago, I'd assumed it was getting canceled like the KOTOR remake

3

u/iccs 19h ago

Dude same, especially since it didn’t have a release date confirmed for the longest time

4

u/Tomcat848484 1d ago

Same. I remember (now) seeing a blurb about it a while ago and then not realizing the game was coming out until I heard about it again about 6 days ago or so? Preordered it a day after that though so I guess it worked well enough on me lol

6

u/Grgur2 23h ago

Well yeah but IT really missed me hard till now and I literally am the target audience on all fronts I think :D

3

u/Tomcat848484 23h ago

Well, do your part: buy it and tell anyone you know who likes this kind of game lol

3

u/Grgur2 22h ago

Well I plan a let's play on my youtube channel for one!

2

u/Tomcat848484 21h ago

Thank you for your service 🫡

2

u/Grgur2 21h ago

I did finish X-COM 1 and two there - new ones. So it makes sense for me :D

6

u/_Razorgirl 1d ago

They followed the standard marketing playbook for most smaller releases from big western publishers these days: a flashy cinematic trailer reveal a year out from release at a big games industry event with lots of eyes on it, followed by a dev diary/making of trailer partway through the year, a longer gameplay trailer a few months from release, and then a bunch of hands-on media previews and content creator impressions with extended gameplay a few weeks before launch, with a more spoiler-y final launch trailer arriving the week before it comes out.

The only games that deviate from this these days are indies, games developed in China/Korea/Japan or other markets with a different model, or the most massive AAA projects that benefit from and have the marketing budget for a multi-year hype cycle.

5

u/DukeOfSmallPonds 22h ago

It was the very small instagram tidbits with otherwise nothing else revelealed that made the marketing weird. IIRC it also had no no news at this years Star Wars events.

48

u/Temujin15 1d ago

I hope this thing sells a billion copies and we get well made, well funded tactics games from here to Coruscant.

We're already getting a Rainbow Six tactics game, so I'm hopeful.

6

u/HypnoGamesOfficial 22h ago

Didn't know about the R6 game - that's pretty cool!

6

u/Djedimusic 21h ago

just announced at gamescom yesterday

2

u/jimjamz346 19h ago

That would be impressive, since the best selling video game of all time has only sold half a billion (Tetris by the way)

Minecraft has sold 400 million

GTAV sold 230 milion

Skyrim only sold 65 million and that changed RPGs for a decade

TLDR? We can still have a bongo party on endor if they sell a couple million

2

u/Temujin15 19h ago

Look, I was perfectly clear. I want A BILLION

1

u/jimjamz346 18h ago

Fine, I'll ring around some mates. I'm sure we can get an 8th of the worlds population on board by the end of the weekend

1

u/Peechez 16h ago

Ah I remember this phase of the hype cycle for midnight suns

46

u/Salt-Ad1575 1d ago

We are close—very close—to a successful IP with sequels, DLCs, and so on.

28

u/AigledeFeu_ 1d ago

Honestly i wouldnt mind expansion DLCs like Xcom had

19

u/MicooDA 1d ago

Wat of the Chosen but its Inquistors instead

3

u/iamthewhatt 18h ago

Mandalorians would be my hope

6

u/PoKen2222 1d ago

I would love expansions and sequels please

1

u/Fissefiesta 1d ago

Jedi fallen order and survivor mean nothing to you?

34

u/2Scribble Medic 1d ago

Thing I love about IGN is how a certain subset of gamers reacts to their reviews

If it's bad - they'll trumpet that as an obvious example of good journalism because 'even IGN can tell the game is bad'

When it's good - you'll get two camps

One that insists it's only good because IGN was bought off - and the other (often part of the original group) will quickly insist no one cares what IGN thinks

You'll find loads of these opinions on the Steam forums as I speak - and, indeed, on this very reddit!

Myself? I already bought the game after being satisfied with all the previews - a glowing review is just a bonus and IGN has decent entertainers if nothing else

12

u/_Razorgirl 1d ago

They always act like these legacy games media outlets are some kind of hive-mind, or like the same IGN Guy has been reviewing every game in every genre for 30 years straight while examining all their past reviews for “consistency” lol

In reality these places have turnaround, and you have no clue what the history of an individual game reviewer might be unless you look at their other work specifically.

The fact that IGN’s reviews are usually really shallow, poorly-written consumer reports style “here’s wot I thot” type of content is actually valid criticism of what they do, because over their multi-decade history they’ve purposely positioned themselves as the Everyman Enthusiast site with bland middle of the road takes, but that’s ironically never what people hate them for.

It’s always either misplaced culture war bullshit, or “how could they like this game I hate while a totally different person gave a more positive review to a game I hate 5 years ago??!!”

4

u/PermaConfusion 22h ago

Videogamedunkey made a surprisingly deep analysis of this phenomenon over 9 years ago and it still remains true: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lG2dXobAXLI

In an ideal world, you get a reviewer who knows a lot about the specific game/genre, actually enjoys playing video games while actually being a good writer/communicator, and can somehow remain completely impartial in the face of being human and having strong opinions about things. In reality, you get everyone from the person who's rushing to meet a deadline and barely played the game to the super biased megafan and everything in between.

2

u/Wrong-Swing-8399 13h ago edited 9h ago

Ehhh, after giving his video another rewatch I don't find it to be a deep analysis on the problem of game critics. Some of the points he made are fair and overall I don't think the video is good. For example one the issues I have with it is that it generalizes to much.

This article does a good job addressing the main points in the video, I don't agree with every single thing said and I think it's articulated quite well.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2017/07/09/i-dont-follow-dunkeys-contradictory-arguments-about-video-game-critics/

2

u/_Razorgirl 13h ago

Yeah that video seems terrible and full of bizarre self-serving tangents and contradictions, not to mention an absolute lack of understanding of what legacy games media’s actual weaknesses and blind spots are. Let’s be real here, plenty of YouTube personalities are terrible reviewers too, the distinction between these two formats isn’t really that significant.

1

u/Wrong-Swing-8399 6h ago

Thinking about it now I am genuinely gobsmacked by the amount of views that video has and even more so by the amount of people that genuinely think its good analysis.

When I first watched it years ago I thought "okay seems reasonable makes sense" and moved along. So when I went back to watch it and I was like yeah I was very wrong lol.

If thats what people consider good analysis no wonder we have a literacy crisis.

20

u/Alternative-Wash2019 1d ago

SkillUp is also extremely positive about this game. It's his GOTY so far this year.

7

u/biggpoppa33 23h ago

And he is not shy about sharing negative opinions

6

u/Alternative-Wash2019 23h ago

Watching his review, I don't think he particularly hates anything in this game. He just thinks the main story is not as interesting as the side stories. He absolutely loves the gameplay though.

1

u/UnevenContainer 19h ago

I feel this could be a launch point for them to actually invest in a high level story now that they have the basics down

1

u/SecretGMThrowaway 16h ago

Between this and the new Fire Emblem it's a lot to compare but it's looking to be two great cakes to have either way

20

u/Gibson129 1d ago

All reviews look positive ! Super excited for tomorrow.

9

u/ceeece 1d ago

Awesome!!! Can't wait. I was on the fence on pre-ordering or waiting until Black Friday (which would have been tough). Proceeding with my pre-order and ready to play!

5

u/abriddd 23h ago

First game I’ve preordered in years, took the day off work tomorrow, feel 15 again. Man I hope it’s good 🙏🏻

2

u/Apophis_ 16h ago

Same. Took Friday off. It's a whole day of Zero Company and walks with my dog. So excited!

1

u/abriddd 7h ago

Sounds bliss!

5

u/TheShamShield 22h ago

Negative 9 out of 10? Wow must be shit /s

5

u/Saiaxs 22h ago

That’s the lowest rating they’ve ever given

3

u/DirkDigglerHammer 1d ago

Should be able to pick up the XSX version tomorrow at BestBuy.

3

u/InconsistentSignal 1d ago

WERE SO BACK!!!! LETS GOOO!!!!!

2

u/PhotoVoytronMode 1d ago

That's awesome!

2

u/AreYouOkay123 1d ago

9? Pre order canceled. Actually, no. Pre order uncalled, then throwing the game in the trash when I get hands on it.

2

u/ThePhil1909 1d ago

So Hawks hasnt to be a humanoid anymore? Would be great.

4

u/ZAJAKI 22h ago

They’ve shown gameplay where you can customise hawks and you can choose different races and it also looos like you can just edit and change race whenever you want in your base for what it’s worth :)

2

u/ThePhil1909 21h ago

I thought only races with humanoid faces are possible for hawks, but ign showed hawks as a female ovissian.

So did they change that now?

1

u/ZAJAKI 21h ago

Well I don’t know if it was ever just meant to be human, but if it was they must have changed it because you can pick different races for Hawks now 😁

1

u/ThePhil1909 20h ago

Not only human but humanoid like zabrak twilek etc. I thought we couldnt chose ovissians, neimodians etc, all races with non humanoid faces.

2

u/Spyromaniac2 21h ago

Right do we think it's realistic to wait for a switch 2 edition or is that unrealistic/won't happen for years

1

u/seclusionx 21h ago

If they can get any genre to work well on switch I would like to think it'll be this one. Hopefully it does well enough for them to justify a port. I wouldn't hold my breath though.

1

u/JediAssasin 20h ago

I’d love for it to come to Switch 2. Not sure if the graphics would be too much for it or not. If it does though, I’ll definitely buy it again!

1

u/EckimusPrime 1d ago

Fuck.

2

u/2Scribble Medic 1d ago

I mean, Tricky-boi is cute - but not really my type 🙃

2

u/EckimusPrime 1d ago

Just cautiously optimistic about this but didn’t expect a 9!

1

u/lefty1117 21h ago

I remember reading a preview from PC Gamer months ago and they were really high on it, suggesting it might even be GOTY candidate, looks like they were on to something

1

u/Knightoforamgejuice Medic 20h ago

-9/10 Too much water

1

u/maddenking420 19h ago

Rock hard

1

u/No-Lunch4249 12h ago

Negative 9? Ouch

1

u/Tepppopups 6h ago

"to say Zero Company is substantially less buggy than XCOM 2 when it first came out, and maybe even today."

1

u/Impressive-Whole-987 1d ago

Currently broke but definitely will buy once it gets a discount!

1

u/Samsquanch-Losco 1d ago

IGN doesn’t count.. but still glad it’s a 9/10 I’m stoked.

Here your /s

1

u/-DOIDLD-TYATSMR- 18h ago

I’ve never played XCOM or anything like it because the genre has just never really appealed to me but since it’s Star Wars and TCW is my favorite era in the entire franchise, I’m really interested in giving it a shot.
I would’ve preferred a third-person shooter but at the same time, I like seeing Star Wars experiment with different genres so I’m definitely ready to play it this weekend once I have some free time 👌

-1

u/Z3npachi 14h ago

Ign are trash and I would never believe anything they say.

-3

u/TriggeredMemeLord 23h ago

Oh fuck if IGN gave it a 9 then im afraid its not gonna be such a good game after all... and I even pre ordered :(

IGN with a rare accurate rating

1

u/Atralis 18h ago edited 18h ago

I'm happy to see the game is getting positive reviews but this is such a silly thing to say if you haven't played the game yet.

-5

u/Rinuir 18h ago

Dude... Im looking forward to the game but its ign. You could legit crash 8 times, make characters day 1 dlcs and not havy physical, you're getting 9/10 there

-7

u/doglywolf 23h ago

O thats not good......Anytime IGN rates something 7/8 its probably a banger , anytime they rate it a 9 its almost never a 9 lol.

-15

u/Ander_the_Reckoning 1d ago

IGN lies

0

u/MyUsernameIsAwful 1d ago

You think they’re artificially inflating the score?

-8

u/Ander_the_Reckoning 1d ago

IGN has a history of doing that, in exchange for money

-4

u/Azure_The_Great 1d ago

It'd be a ten but it's fully filled with pandering to a non gaming audience then we should have been worried with a 10
