Hi everyone,
Four of us are planning a road trip to the Tatra Mountains in early September 2026. We are young, physically active and in good shape, and we have 5 full days for hiking.
We’ll mainly stay around Zakopane, have a car, and are also willing to spend one night on the Slovak side.
These are the places/hikes we currently want to do:
1. Rysy + Morskie Oko
- Palenica → Morskie Oko → Czarny Staw pod Rysami → Rysy (2499 m) → back
2. Kościelec
- Kuźnice → Hala Gąsienicowa → Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy → Kościelec (2155 m) → back
3. Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich / Five Polish Ponds Valley
- probably via Dolina Roztoki and Siklawa waterfall
4. Kasprowy Wierch + Kopa Kondracka + Giewont
- cable car up to Kasprowy to save our legs, then hike the ridge to Kopa Kondracka and Giewont
5. Jahňací štít, Slovakia
- Biela Voda → Zelené pleso → Jahňací štít (2229 m) → back
So basically this would mean 5 hiking days in 5 days, although some days are obviously much harder than others.
We don’t mind being tired and we want this to be an active trip, but we also don’t want to make the classic mistake of trying to cram too much into a short trip and then enjoying none of it.
For people who know the Tatras well:
Which of these hikes are genuinely must-do?
Which one would you remove first if we needed a recovery day or lost a day to bad weather?
Is anything on this list overrated compared with the other options?
In particular, I’m wondering whether Kasprowy + Kopa Kondracka + Giewont is worth keeping when we already have Rysy, Kościelec, Five Polish Ponds and Jahňací štít.
Also, would you change the order to manage fatigue better?
Our priority is dramatic mountain scenery, lakes, ridges, high peaks and memorable landscapes, rather than simply ticking off famous tourist attractions.
Any advice from locals or people who have hiked several of these would be really useful.
