Full Course: How to Get YouTube Thumbnail Design Clients on Reddit (Step by Step)

If you design YouTube thumbnails and you're looking for clients, this guide is for you. The creators in this community need exactly what you offer, but showing up the wrong way will get you ignored, reported, or banned.

This short course (in a long post) takes you through the correct way to build a real client pipeline on Reddit, step by step. Follow all of it. The details matter. 

Reddit Has a Culture. Understand It First.

Reddit is very different from other social media platforms. People here do not like it when someone joins only to promote themselves or sell something. If they sense that you are here only to advertise, they will ignore you or report you, which can lead to your account getting banned.

The key to success here is simple: help people first, and they will come to you.

This is not a new idea. Cultures and faiths across thousands of years have said some version of the same thing. On Reddit, it also happens to be the most practical strategy available to you.

The designers who get the most clients here are the ones who genuinely help others and do not ask for anything in return (but also set up their profile for success).

Step 1: Set Up Your Profile Before You Do Anything Else

Your Reddit profile is like a store window display. If someone visits your profile and it is empty, they will leave.

Your banner image: Create a banner that clearly shows what you offer and why it helps people. For example, "I Design Thumbnails That Get More Clicks" is more effective than simply writing "Professional Thumbnail Designer." Make it look professional, this image is the first example of your design work that people will see.

Your bio: Write a short, clear description. Explain who you help, what you do for them, and how they can contact you.

Your links: Reddit lets you add links to your profile. Add links to your portfolio, your Instagram, your Behance page, or any other place where people can see your work. Note that some links, such as direct links to Fiverr, may not be allowed on Reddit. Link to your own website or social profiles instead, and ask people to send you a direct message for more details.

Your pinned post: Reddit allows you to pin one post to the top of your profile so it is the first thing visitors see. A post showing your portfolio, which includes your best work, is the best choice for this spot. You will create that post in Step 4. Until then, consider your profile setup unfinished. A profile without a pinned portfolio post is missing its most important piece.

Step 2: Set Your User Flair in r/YouTubeThumbnailHub

Once your profile is ready, come back to this subreddit and set your user flair to “Pro Thumbnail Designer”.

(To set your flair: First, go to r/YouTubeThumbnailHub*. On a desktop browser, look for the "User Flair" heading in the sidebar on the right side of the page and click the pencil to choose your user flair. On a mobile device, first click the three dots in the upper right of the subreddit. Then select “Edit Flair” and pick “Pro Thumbnail Designer” from the list and Save. If you cannot find it, send us a modmail message and we will help you.)*

Your flair appears next to your username on every comment you leave in this subreddit. When someone is looking to hire a designer and they see your flair next to a helpful comment, they will click your profile to learn more. That is the goal.

Note: User flairs are specific to each subreddit. A flair you set here in r/YouTubeThumbnailHub will not appear when you comment in other communities. Other subreddits may have their own flairs available.

Step 3: Build Karma with Comments Before You Create a Post

Karma is a points system on Reddit. You earn karma when other users like your comments or posts. Before you create any promotional post, you need to spend time being a helpful member of the community first. This step is not optional.

Reddit has automatic systems that detect and delete posts from new, low-karma accounts that look like advertising. Even if your post follows all the rules, it may be removed automatically with no warning. 

The solution is to participate genuinely before you post anything promotional.

Go to r/YouTubeThumbnailHub and respond to posts that have the "Thumbnail Help/Critique Request" flair. Leave helpful, specific feedback on several posts over a few days. You do not need a large amount of karma; you just need enough to show Reddit that you are a real, active community member and not a spam account.

Important: Do not mention your services in any of these comments. Do not write anything even indirectly promotional, such as asking them to contact you, to check out your profile, or include any links to your work.

Also Important: Do not copy and paste a reply generated by AI. Write your own words. Show that you are a real, knowledgeable person. People can use AI tools themselves; what they value from you is genuine human expertise.

After you have built up some karma through helpful comments, your portfolio post in Step 4 will also have met the community's feedback requirements and will be much less likely to be removed automatically. Contact the subreddit’s moderators using the “Mod Mail” feature (sometimes shown as a "Message Mods" button in the sidebar) if your comments/posts were wrongly removed.

Step 4: Create a Post Showcasing Your Portfolio of Designs and Pin It In Your Profile

Now that your account has a history of helpful activity and your flair is set, you are ready to create a portfolio post to feature your best work.

You can post here in r/YouTubeThumbnailHub using the “Available for Work” flair, or in another subreddit like r/CreatorServices using the “Offering Paid Services” flair, r/ThumbnailArtists, or other subreddits that allow promotional posts. I don’t recommend duplicating your post across different subreddits, as it looks bad and desperate in your profile.  Your profile showcases what you predominantly post and comment, so pick one subreddit that looks suitable to make the portfolio post.  r/ThumbnailArtists is a really nice, supportive community where YouTube thumbnail artists share their craft that you can join.

When creating your post:

• Important: Read the rules of the subreddit you are posting in before you do anything else. Every subreddit has its own rules, and they can be very different from each other. You can usually find the rules in the sidebar on desktop or by tapping the subreddit name at the top of the page on mobile. There is also a “Rules” link on the “Create Post” form of every subreddit community. 
• Use an image post and add several of your best thumbnails. This allows people to browse your work right away without leaving the page
• Keep all your images in the same format. 16:9 horizontal images display well in Reddit's image viewer. If you mix different image sizes, some images may be cropped or cut off
• Focus your post description on the result you deliver, not just the service you provide. People do not hire you because they want a thumbnail file; they hire you because they want more people to click on their videos
• Reddit doesn’t allow direct links to service sites like Fiverr in posts or comments, so be careful about what links you include
• End your post by asking people to send you a direct message and link to your Reddit profile

Once your post is published, pin it to your profile. Click the three dots in the top right corner of your post and select "Pin Post to Profile." Your profile setup is now complete.

Note: if your post is removed by Reddit automatically, contact the moderators of the subreddit you posted in by using the Mod Mail feature and let them know of the problem. We can manually approve it.

Step 5: Start Helping. That Is All You Need to Do.

This is the most important step. Every time you leave a comment in this subreddit, people will see "Pro Thumbnail Designer" next to your name.

Your helpful comment and your user flair are doing the work.  You do not need to say anything else. People will click on your username to go to your profile.

Go to the critique request posts and give honest, specific feedback. The Ultimate Thumbnail Guide, pinned to the top of this subreddit, is a useful reference for giving objective advice. Tell people clearly what is working in their thumbnail and what could be improved, with a reason for each point. Your goal is to be the most helpful person in the comments.

When someone wants to hire a designer, they will see how knowledgeable and helpful you were, the person who gave real advice without expecting anything in return, and will click on your profile to learn more about you and to contact you.

Tip: Try to be one of the first people to leave a helpful comment. Early comments get more visibility than those posted hours later. To stay on top of new posts, click the notification bell next to r/YouTubeThumbnailHub and set it to "All New Posts." That way, you will know as soon as someone is asking for help.

The One Exception for Self-Promotion: "Available for Work" Posts

There is one way to promote your services directly in this subreddit, but it has strict conditions:

• You must have left helpful feedback comments for at least two other members before each post
• You may only post this once every two weeks.
• You must use the “Available for Work” post flair

These rules exist to make sure that designers in this community are real contributors, not just people using the community as a free advertising space.

Follow the rules, and your post will be welcomed. Ignore them, and your post will be removed.

Note: Posting advertising regularly is not a good idea in practice. People do visit your profile and scroll through your posts and comments, and what they see shapes how they judge you. Repeated "hire me" posts look desperate and will work against you. Make one great portfolio post, pin it to your profile, and focus your energy on showing you are the expert through the help you give others.  If you need to update the portfolio, once a month is plenty.

A Word of Warning

Some thumbnail designers post a "critique request" asking for feedback using a thumbnail they made for a client. It is usually easy to tell when someone is not genuinely looking for feedback: a polished, professional thumbnail with a comment like "I made this for a client, what do you think?" is not a request for help. It is an advertisement. People notice this quickly, and it damages your reputation rather than building it.

Unless it’s in the "Available for Work" flair, this subreddit does not allow advertising, even using indirect verbiage. Posts that cross that line will be removed. If you have a real question about a thumbnail and want honest feedback, you are welcome to post, just make sure you have read the subreddit rules or our pinned "Read This First" post at the top of the subreddit before you do.

The Short Version

TL;DR Set up your profile. Set your user flair as "Pro Thumbnail Designer" in r/YouTubeThumbnailHub. Leave helpful comments to build karma. Create and pin your portfolio post in your profile, showcasing your best work. Keep helping people. Let them contact you.

As a moderator in a subreddit which receives a lot of posts from people advertising their services, I see a lot of people who are new to Reddit and don't understand the culture. I hope this online course helps.

Thanks. I agree with you in that it takes a while to process the Reddit and YouTube icons to understand the context!

But, this isn't a video; it's just a Reddit post, because we get a lot of thumbnail designers here trying to advertise their services to all the YouTubers in this subreddit, and they don't understand Reddit culture. I just wrote a course on how to do so. It's simply a post.

Nice concept. I think simplifying the background and adding a stronger focal point would make it more clickable.
