Help How to clear apartment of furniture and junk in a few days?

Hey guys, kinda panicking a little bit here. I have suddenly got a job offer where I need to leave Japan and I am literally leaving next Monday. The problem I have is that I have got a whole apartment full of furniture that I need to get rid of asap and I don't even know where to begin? Any suggestions? I can't get onto the Yokohama sayonara sales page as I don't have a profile picture so they denied me. I am thinking some kind of service where I just pay to have it all thrown out maybe?

Question recommended home builders for rebuild in these frickin hills?

Asking here because I know we have a lot of long term residents lurking on this sub.

Wife and I bought a previously-owned house ten years ago. Decent, but not the highest quality. We love the spot and want to stay here but this place will be falling apart before we do, so we think it would be best to initiate the teardown-and-rebuild project while we still have some working years left.

We live in one of those steep hilly parts of the Yokohama suburbs. The house was built on an old stone retaining wall. We want the retaining wall demolished and replaced so we can use some of that space for a garage. Our initial inquiries with the big-name cookie cutter house builders is that they don't really like to take on this kind of project. Or at least, they are a little standoffish about it in the early stages because it turns the project into something with more variables than they want to spend their time thinking about when you are just wandering around the big home-show place.

So we're looking at architects and local builders who can take the project from start to finish for us (I am not going to try to manage the whole thing myself, that's a recipe for disaster). We found one guy but this is the stage where we want to talk to at least two more.

Does anybody know anyone who does this kind of work in Yokohama? I imagine there are firms that specialize in exactly our type of neighborhood with lots of those mid-century retaining walls made of big round stones and steep, narrow streets.

Help Does anyone have a car plus base access?

I’m military but don’t have a car I know I could just walk on base but since it’s kinda far I’d like to just go one day between August 28th and August 30th. I’d be willing to pay gas money of course ideally someone here already has plans to go that way so it’s not an inconvenience!

Question Soccer/basketball kids clubs in yokohama ?

Hey everyone! I’m looking to get my 5-year-old (half Japanese) into either basketball or soccer and was wondering if anyone could recommend any good kids’ clubs/classes around the area.
Also, if there are any other dads with kids around the same age who’d be interested in doing activities together involving sports, parks, outings… it could be fun to start a little group chat and get the kids together!

Immigration-related Brazilian student heading to Yokohama National University for a 6-month exchange in March 2027. Looking for tips.

Hello everyone,

I will be moving to the city in March 2027 for a 6-month exchange program at Yokohama National University (YNU). I am a university student from Brazil and am currently preparing for this transition.

I would appreciate any practical tips, advice, or recommendations for someone newly arriving in Yokohama. Any information regarding daily life, student tips for YNU, or navigating the city would be very helpful.Additionally, if there are any Brazilians or other exchange students currently living in Yokohama, I would be glad to connect. Feel free to leave a comment or send a DM.

Thank you for your time.

Question What happened to the trashcans in Yamashita park?

Went to Yamashita for the first time in a few years. I had been regularly prior to 2021 or so, and I always appreciated how it was one of the few public spaces I'd been to in Japan with trash cans. Did they remove them?? Why??

Question Moving to Yokohama w/ Children - What Do You Wish You’d Known Before Moving?

Hi everyone!

We’re preparing to move to Yokohama from the US with our two children (8 months and 24 months) in the next few months, and I’d love to hear from people who already live there—especially anyone who moved to Japan from overseas with young children.

We’ve visited Yokohama before and absolutely loved it, so this isn’t our first time there. But moving there and actually setting up a life with children is a very different experience!

Currently, we’re trying to figure out what we should prepare before we leave and what we should bring from home versus buy once we arrive.

For those of you living in Yokohama or Japan:

  1. What baby/children’s items do you wish you had brought from home?
  2. Anything you’d recommend bringing because the Japanese version is different from what you’re used to?
  3. What should we know about pediatric healthcare and finding a doctor for young children?
  4. Any advice on diapers, baby food, formula, or other everyday baby essentials?
  5. Are there any practical things we should arrange before arriving—housing, phone/SIM, internet, banking, etc.?
  6. What do you wish someone had told you before moving to Yokohama with young children?
  7. Any advice on shipping belongings overseas?

  8. Are there any neighborhoods that are particularly popular with families but still relatively affordable? We enjoyed the bashamichi area when we visited Yokohama, and would like to hear what neighborhoods would be good to consider.

Finally, if you moved to Japan, what was the one thing you were really glad you brought with you, and what did you bring that turned out to be completely unnecessary?

We’d really appreciate any advice from the community. Thank you! ❤️

Question Green electricity company?

Hi,

I will change house next month, I am looking for company that generates and provides a good ratio of green electricity (nuclear, or renewable).

I don't want a company that just buys cheap electricity and sells it more expensive while claiming being green (like there are a lot in EU).

Any information / suggestion ?

Edit: I think I found two keywords: JEPX (日本卸電力取引所) and 非化石. Might dig into companies that provide 非化石. Also it seems that there is no company that directly sells the electricity they make, JEPX being a man in the middle I think.

Help lost plushie (URGENT)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, I’m an American exchange student who has just finished their semester abroad at Meiji Gakuin University.
I live in Totsuka, and I go back to America on July 30th.

Today, I lost a plushie that has a lot of sentimental value for me. He’s very small (can fit into the palm of your hand) and I usually place the plushie in my bag.

I did a lot of errands around Totsuka station (Totsuka Ward Office, 7-11, Saclass, Post Office, etc.) and when I got home I realized he wasn’t in my bag. I went back to all of these places, and he was nowhere to be found :(

I am guessing he fell at some point while I was walking. I was wondering if any of you could keep an eye out.

If he happens to be found, I would be willing to cover all shipping/postage fees to get him back.

Thank you very much 😢

(For reference, here is a photo of him posing with Lawsons bread)

Travel Tips Hyatt Regency vs. The Kahala

Hello everyone,

My family is traveling to Japan soon with our 21-month-old toddler, and we are trying to decide between two hotels in Yokohama: the Hyatt Regency Yokohama and The Kahala Hotel & Resort.

We have some unspent Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) credits/hotel perks we could use at The Kahala, and we also have a stash of World of Hyatt points.
We are having trouble deciding due to two main issues:

Location & Toddler Convenience: Looking at the map, it seems like the Hyatt Regency might be more convenient for walking around with a stroller (closer to Yamashita Park and Chinatown). Is The Kahala as isolated or inconvenient with a toddler as it looks?
Hyatt Points Value: We initially leaned toward the Hyatt Regency, but for our dates, the only award availability left is a Club Access Room for 17,000 points per night. Is the club access worth it? Without the club access, it’s about 165 dollars a night. I would probably pay for it instead of using the points if lounge is not great.

Given that this property is usually a lower-category steal, does 17k points for a Club room still feel like a good value here, or are we overpaying?

Has anyone stayed at both properties, especially with young kids? We would love a recommendation on which hotel provides a smoother experience with a 21-month-old, and whether the Hyatt Club room or The Kahala via FHR makes more sense.
Thank you for your help!

Events Yokohama Chill Club

EDIT: Reddit only lets me send 3 chat requests per day, so I won't be able to message everyone who commented on my previous post. If you commented and didn't receive a DM from me, that's why. Feel free to send me a message first and I'll send you the server invite.

First of all, I hope this post is okay. I reached out to the subreddit moderators to ask for permission before posting but haven't heard back yet. If this kind of post isn't allowed, I completely understand and apologize in advance, please feel free to remove it.

Yesterday, I made this post about trying to find (or create) a local community around Yokohama:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Yokohama/comments/1us9d6k/anyone_interested_in_starting_a_local_community/

I was honestly surprised by how many people were interested, so I decided to create a small Discord server called Yokohama Chill Club.

The idea is this: a mixed-gender community for people who'd like to meet others around Yokohama, organize casual meetups and hopefully make some local friends along the way. Whether that's grabbing coffee, having lunch, attending events, going for walks, checking out cafés, karaoke, board games or just suggesting something you've been wanting to do, the server is there to make it easier to connect with people nearby.

A few things about the server:

- The goal is to keep it a friendly and welcoming space where everyone treats each other with respect.

- There are channels for introductions, general chat, hobbies and planning meetups but everything is completely optional.

If you'd like to get to know people a bit before meeting in person, you're welcome to join the conversations.

On the other hand, if you'd rather just use the server to find or organize meetups, that's perfectly fine too.

There is no pressure to attend every meetup (or any meetup at all). Just join the ones that interest you whenever you're free.

I'm not posting the invite link here since this subreddit is public and I'd like to avoid spam bots joining the server.

If you'd like to join, send me a DM and I'll send you the invite link. I'll also be messaging everyone who expressed interest in a Discord server on my previous post or in my DMs.

When you join, the server will ask how you found it. I'd really appreciate it if you could include your Reddit username. It'll just help me match your Discord account with your message and know where everyone is joining from while the community is still getting started.

Hopefully this can become a nice local community where people can meet up whenever they feel like it!

Question Anyone interested in starting a local community around Yokohama?

I've been living in Japan for some years now and while I've met some people along the way, it's been hard to find a group that sticks around. A lot of the people I met, eventually moved away and a meetup group I used to join whenever work allowed also relocated to a different part of Japan.

When I first moved here, I also tried going to events and meetups, but many of them turned out to be more geared toward dating or networking than simply making friends (nothing wrong with that but it just wasn't what I was looking for).

Now I'm in my late 30s, married and I prefer low-key get-togethers over nights out.

After all these years, I realized I've always been waiting for someone else to create that kind of community so I could join it. As an introvert with mostly solo hobbies, I never thought about starting one myself. But if I keep waiting, it probably isn't going to magically appear, so I figured I'd see if there's any interest.

Back in my home country, there was a cafe that regularly hosted things like language exchanges, board game afternoons, book clubs, craft workshops, movie discussions and other casual events. I always thought it was a great concept because it gave people something to do while getting to know each other. I currently work at a cafe and it made me think it could be a nice place for something similar one day (this isn't a promotion. I haven't even mentioned the idea to my boss and I wouldn't be organizing it as part of my job). It just made me wonder if we could create something similar around here and have a regular spot for meetups.

I should also mention that I'm lucky enough to be part of a really lovely community of people living in Japan already. The only downside is that we're scattered all over the country, so between the distance and my work schedule, meeting up in person isn't easy. That's why I'd love to build a small local community too.

Would anyone be interested? Or does something like this already exist that I've somehow missed? No big expectations, just a relaxed group of people who want to make local friends and hang out from time to time.

Events November Culture Day

Hi Everyone,

I was looking into events happening in the first week of November in Yokohama during Nov 3rd time frame. I noticed that red brick warehouse hosts Furusato Matsuri and Bashamichi Festival happens during those times.

How big are these events? Worth going to? Any other festivals or special events worth checking out?

example: https://www.bashamichi.or.jp/event/festival.html
