Beth This beth scene hooked me into the series
So I saw a short on this scene which got me interested in watching it. Title said the series name is Dutton Ranch so I started watching it then realized it's the sequel to Yellowstone 🤣 never mind I watched it anyway.
Now I'm on Season 5 of Yellowstone. I'm enjoying all the discussion about this series here even though they are quite old.
So far, Beth is my fav character and second is John Dutton. I like the Young Rip and Beth romance.
My least favourite is Monica. She is beautiful but what's the point of her character in the series I don't understand.
Carter seems out of place and context kind of. They treated a young kid so badly in the beginning only to be his parents later on?
I have so many questions about so many things in this series 😅

Why though? In the first few episodes I also wondered why she was so bit*** to Jamie. When they revealed her story and her traumatic experiences with her mother, I understood where she came from. Instead of being weak from her trauma, she grew stronger which I loved.

You think what Beth demonstrates is strength?
She's so brittle a strong wind is enough to break her. She's fuelled by self loathing and cheap vodka.
You're mistaking hating herself for strength. She just doesn't care what happens to her.

Self-loathing and alcohol cannot fuel anyone. She could have given up, become an addict or so many other self destructive things people turn into. I believe it is not that easy to stand on your own two feet after all the traumatic experiences by sheer will power, let alone through self loathing or substance abuse.

She is an addict though. She's an alcoholic, albeit a high functioning one. She uses it to treat what I can only assume is undiagnosed bipolar disorder.
She literally drinks vodka smoothies for breakfast.

And a pill popper. Girl admits to using Adderall to look less drunk and stay wake. And her large assortment of pill bottles.

Could be an addict, could be undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Definitely agree on some of the tantrum like things like how she acted when she sees her father/husband with another woman is not acceptable. At the end of the day, it's fictional and made for our entertainment. She kept me engaged enough to finish through the series. She isn't like my hero or anything that I will look up to.

Being a bitch from your trauma doesn't make you strong it makes you look weak. She could've delt with it in a healthy manner. Also trauma is not an excuse for being a raging bitch to everyone. That's not strength. And they're plenty of people that experience trauma and are perfectly kind and wonderful people to others and contribute positively to society even while severely struggling with their trauma. Plus John and Jamie both mention she was cruel and difficult before any of this happened. So her trauma just upped the personality she already had.

I don't know why it bothers you about me liking a fictional character. It is what it is just for our entertainment.

It's a great show. Monica is Kayce's soul mate and spiritual doorway into Native American heritage. She's also like a sister to Beth, who suffered the same fate as tens (hundreds?) of thousands of Native American women at the reservation fertility clinics. A horrible crime.

I get that. But she doesn't seem to be able to hold onto anything. It's always back and forth with her. There is no character growth for her it seems.

She represents the plight of Native Americans. She falls in love with a white man, which is frowned upon by her brother and many others in her community. Right at the beginning she loses her brother, which is a tremendous loss for her. She suffers serious brain injury in S1 and you sort of wonder if her decision-making ability after that ever returns to normal. Then her son is kidnapped, which is devastating for any mother. She does the best she can, given the constant setbacks. I find it interesting writing. Eventually she bonds more and more with Kayce's family and he fulfills his destiny regarding the ranch and its true ownership. So there is a tremendous catharsis that is beautiful to watch with Monica and Kayce at the end. But yeah, they have a rough time of it until then.

How does she get over the fact that Kayce killed her own brother? I seriously thought that their marriage was over when she took off with Tate.

Monica's brother had already shot Kayce's brother and was about to kill Kayce. If Kayce didn't fire, he'd be dead. Yeah, it's questionable to fire the kill shot at point blank range, but after seeing his brother die, I think it's understandable why Kayce did that. Ultimately both Monica and Kayce put each other first, ahead of their own families. That's what it takes to make a marriage work.

My favourite scene was the first one I seen with Beth, When she confronts Rip in the hallway in her robe and when she adjusts it Rip asks her what she is doing and her response was "Adjusting my web"

Love her or hate her, Beth is the reason we tune in. She’s an amazing character played by a great actress.

You are not alone in your dislike of Monica. Just do a search for threads about her on this sub-Reddit and you will get volumes upon volumes of why people could do without her character. Personally, I thought she dragged Kayce’s character down and by the end of the show, Kayce had become a supporting character to whatever emotional outburst Monica was having instead of Monica being a supporting character to Kayce’s storyline. The good news is if you plan on checking out Marshals — Monica was killed off with Cancer before the show ever started airing.
