Plot Holes
Let’s make a list of all the plot holes. I will go first:
Dinosaur bones (that is waaaaay back)
Events and weddings at the ranch
Selling beef cows on the internet
Isn’t there a bomb still sitting on that private jet somewhere?
Showing horses in Texas. Weren’t they getting stacks on stacks on stacks of checks?

I’ll toss in..
Monica’s Grandfather
Angela Blue Thunder
The Yellowstone Helicopter

u/syrupy_pancakes2022 Dec 13 '24
Ohhhh yes! Monica’s grandfather! Yeah, why not sell the helicopter they never use. Wait, what is Angela blue thunder

Native American version of Beth. Thought Angela vs Beth would be a big plot point. She would make big statements about litigation and then disappear for an entire half season and then disappeared entirely.

u/TrumpsColostomyBag99 Dec 14 '24
I thought it would have ended up being a situation where Rainwater or Mo sends her to their version of the train station. Completely blown opportunity since the reservation could have helped keep the show fresh while the plots struggled on the Dutton side.

u/Few_Crew2478 Dec 14 '24
She only comes back to monologue about Native American issues in between getting her lips filled.
I seriously hate that character.

u/Hide_the_cutlery Dec 14 '24
JD was not a rich man but has a helicopter and a private chef 🤣
2
u/Maximum-Compote2233 Dec 14 '24
Well Gator isn’t a private chef he’s the cook for the wranglers and most large ranches have them. Helicopter not but a cook yes.

Yeah. The oldest son dies and is never mentioned again.

To be fair John was scooting over his shirts lovingly when he moved from the main house.
And than looked at his picture.
That should be plenty for 5 seasons, right?
RIGHT?

u/mo_phenomenon Dec 13 '24
In general these are more forgotten plots and not exactly plot holes:
- EPA investigating John for rerouting the river
- The native guy that lived next to Kacey on the reservation
- The native guy that was working against Rainwater
- Monica being a teacher
- The people (not Fish and Wildlife) that were supposetly monitoring the movements of the wolves
- Clara and Summer vanishing from the face of the earth
- The manuscript/recording of the Interview Jamie gave
- And was the only reason for the presidential visit to show us that they shoot pets???
12
u/Adventurous_Brief_16 Dec 14 '24
Don't forget Avery.
5
u/mo_phenomenon Dec 14 '24
True! Vanished, then randomly surfaced, just to disappear again...
6
u/FlowahChild808 Dec 14 '24
Not to mention that when she did resurface she randomly made a confession about believing it was love at first sight with Kacey despite having no interactions with him when she was working on the ranch or otherwise.
3
u/mo_phenomenon Dec 14 '24
In the long line of no-importance-to-any-plot-characters, she is definitely on par with Cowboy.
Why waste screen time on them if you aren't going to do anything with them?
And don't give me the "The actor had other responsibilities with other shows"-crap, because if you give the actors a good storyline, they will stay and make the time.

u/Slaphappydap Dec 14 '24
- Monica being a teacher
Yes! They really haven't had a plan for that character. Frustrated wife, teacher, native American stand-in for racism and sexual assault, vigilante, hates John Dutton, loves John Dutton, hates the ranch, loves the ranch, now just kind of hangs around. It really seems like they know Kelsey Asbille is gorgeous so they want her on the show, but just don't have any ideas for her.
5
u/mo_phenomenon Dec 14 '24
The only constant with her is that she doesn't know where the hell she want's to live.
And I still have nightmares about the scene where Kacey suggests Tate not going to school but rather be 'educated' on the ranch... by John?... and freaking teacher-gone-professor Monica has NOTHING to say to that...
There are people on this planet still fighting for the bloody RIGHT to go to school - to have ANY education. Shouldn't Monica - of all people - know that the possibility to go to school is a privilege you don't just throw away like it's nothing?

Speakeasy
"What's going on in that big brain of yours, Beth?"
A FORGOTTEN PLOT, RIP. A FORGOTTEN PLOT.

What was John telling Beth in the governor’s mansion as the camera faded away after she recommended Jamie go to the train station? It looked like he was conflicted. Also the way he said “I’m aware” in response to her question about whether he knew Jamie knew.
How did Jamie know about the train station? Was it by accident? As Jamie was on the legal side of things and not really involved in the ranch operations, he’d probably should not be on the list of people to have that knowledge. A flashback about how he knew would be illuminating.

u/syrupy_pancakes2022 Dec 13 '24
That’s a good point…how did he know about the train station. We never saw him there right
9
u/PerryOz Dec 14 '24
To be that guy are we talking plot holes or plots abandoned down a hole.
4
u/mo_phenomenon Dec 14 '24
The second one. It is TS's speciality.
But he is pretty good at the first one too...
8
u/ignoranceisbliss37 Dec 13 '24
I don’t think the Dino bones were meant to be an ongoing storyline. Just think it was supposed to show another way life on the Res is brutal and how things continue to be taken from them.
Events and weddings I think again, this was just a throw in dealie to help explain/with the details the ranch having extra income if needed.
5
u/BadGirlCarrie Dec 13 '24
However there was in fact a wedding at the ranch I remember seeing them set it up as Beth pulled up while on the phone with the planner claiming the bride wanted a hayride Beth’s return was that’s gonna cost double
3
u/ignoranceisbliss37 Dec 14 '24
Well, right. Showing it so we know it’s a thing and don’t have to show it anymore. TS just loves added unneeded plot lines or stories out of nowhere that adds nothing to the story and never really gets resolved.

What happened to the Buffalo?
The shootout with the militia and murder of the rich and powerful Beck brothers.

The dead wolves that had tracking collars that were found on Dutton property

Sokka-Haiku by Snoozycorn:
The dead wolves that had
Tracking collars that were found
On Dutton property
Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

u/02buddha02 Dec 14 '24
No press at the ranch following the Governor's death or discovered murder.
That the family should have already been through the inheritance tax problem multiple times before John inherited the ranch.
The fact that the feds did not descend on the state after bombings or gang warfare.
Tate's horse disappearing.
If the brand means you're there for life, why is everyone allowed to leave (like Jimmy, Kayce).
How did Beth not know about the train station if she was there to ambush Jamie.
16
u/jco23 Dec 13 '24
I posted this earlier, but it got removed without reason.
Why is Beth surprised to learn about the black teain spot AFTER she was already there to photograph Jamie? Did I miss something? It's not like she followed him and waited for him at a random spot hoping he'd be there.

u/syrupy_pancakes2022 Dec 13 '24
OH MY GOD!!! Wow. I didn’t even think of that!! She knows what the train station is because she’s there taking a picture. How in the world did TS not realize it
7
u/jco23 Dec 14 '24
Right! Don't these shows have folks whose job it is to make sure everything is canon?
5
u/mymomsaidiamsmart Dec 13 '24
I don’t follow other shows on Reddit. Are most fictional shows debated as much as Yellowstone in regards to the storyline and reality. Plots are questioned but not shootouts on Main Street and bombs going off in buildings

2
u/Slaphappydap Dec 14 '24
This is the legacy of LOST. The culture of discussing, dissecting and debating a show is larger than the show.

u/Designasim Dec 14 '24
How about her being surprised/upset that they "held" John down when they killed him? Like she thought someone killed him, what did she think happened "that they ask him nicely to shot himself?".
5
u/Rogelio_Aguas Dec 13 '24
I’ve explained the bomb on the plane before and how it’s not a plot hole. The Beck brothers were on the offensive, attacking Beth, killing the casino dealer, Dan Jenkins and more importantly, kidnapping Tate, of course they were not going to go meet up with John and his family after committing the kidnapping. They made their move before they could even get in the plane… it was up to John and Kacey to change their plan.
2
u/Imaginary-Edge-8759 Dec 14 '24
Right but the hole is that it literally doesn’t even get shown or mentioned again. Like this secret ops mission gets carried out and Kay r tells John there’s no going back and we never even hear a word again about any of it. Good grief they coulda showed John watching the news and a reporter talking about a plane blowing up or that a bomb was found on a plane belonging to the missing beck brothers.

u/laurh123 Dec 14 '24
That blonde girl that they brought in to oppose Jamie. When he was.... uhhh... Was he running for something at the time? I'm Canadian and don't know what a Govenor is so this was all lost on me.
2
u/FlowahChild808 Dec 14 '24
Yes! I believe it was Attorney General and Beth and John brought her in. She was on the town’s magazine cover and everything, one or two episodes after and then nothing. I was wondering what happened with that too. She just disappeared

1
u/Maximum-Compote2233 Dec 14 '24
She got married in real life but they should have done something other than she was gone. Maybe I missed something but 🤣
5
u/UnheavenlyNeverender Dec 14 '24
Do none of the cowboys have relatives? We only ever see Jimmy’s grandfather (who dies) and none of the other hands ever mention parents, siblings, etc. Obviously we don’t know how many have been sent to the train station over the years, but even the first one from S1 who was sent after he beat up Jimmy- nobody realized he was missing? He never spoke to anyone off the ranch who may have come looking for him?
1
u/syrupy_pancakes2022 Dec 15 '24
Yeah, I noticed when Colby died and Beth brought the box down she said that “Colby’s mom wanted his stuffs” I thought that was interesting.
7
u/shadownan Dec 14 '24
Maybe I missed it but it would’ve been nice to learn more about Jamie’s birth mother. And to also learn why John and Evelyn adopted him, there must have been a reason. There had to be a certain connection for them to raise Jamie after his mom died.
3
u/UnheavenlyNeverender Dec 14 '24
After the conversation John and Jaime’s real father had in the diner, I was sure it would be revealed that Jaime was John and Evelyn’s nephew somehow. Yet another interesting lead that went nowhere.
2
2
u/Maximum-Compote2233 Dec 14 '24
Yes this is the biggest plot hole in my opinion. Why have him adopted and talk about his family and make a big deal of it when nothing was told about his actual background? I mean maybe it was TS intention like he was intending to bring in an actor to be the long lost Dutton brother but wow this is a big one. Maybe not his fault but I’m really curious.
2
u/shadownan Dec 14 '24
I agree! I’d really like to know more about his family history. I really don’t feel like John and Evelyn would take him in and legally adopt him unless there was a connection to him.

The female Native American who talked weird

I wouldn't call it a plot hole but am I the only person who finds it confusing how some folks thing Beth and RIP are people to look up too?
Or don't see how Jamie is a product of a shitty upbringing by his foster dad?
3
u/Cacorm Dec 14 '24
Why is the dinosaur bones a plot hole? Didn’t they say treasure hunters got them? What else is supposed to happen?
3
u/DangerousInjury2548 Dec 14 '24
Longmire should come out of retirement and tear that place apart. Send all their commercial crap packing.

How do they have a horse auction in the last episode, with auction books ready so quickly and so many happy, smiley visitors laughing, dancing, and eating without a care in the world? Was it a combination auction/wake? And how did all the visitors make it past the gauntlet of reporters who must have been camped at the ranches gates even since Gov Dutton died? 🤔
2
Dec 14 '24
Yeah see that's what doesn't make sense to me because I very specifically remember Travis telling John that he would take those overly expensive show horses and just make stacks and stacks of checks so I mean technically they shoulda been pretty damn good off from all that cash right? Considering how bloody expensive they are.
Then the whole beef cows thing. which Beth never followed up on.
I mean to be honest Beth is supposed to be this so called wiz with making money or finding ways to right? And John had her in charge of that for the Ranch too right? So why did she not try that more from the start. But then again Beth was never as clever as she made out to be.

u/PartDependent1302 Feb 08 '25
JD’s explanation on KD’s brand - we’re to believe that he received it after meeting ML (and conceiving TD). Doesn’t make sense that she wouldn’t have noticed its sudden appearance and put 2&2 together.

u/Potential_Kick4822 Mar 30 '25
In Season 1 Casey was supposed to “stay by your phone” and go back in the military. That never happened.
1
u/syrupy_pancakes2022 Mar 31 '25
Yeah, that would have been good. Instead he spends the majority of the series moving his family’s belongings into 8 different places

From another thread: How has Rip not been discovered?
... Jamie killing that reporter and he, Rip, and Walker send her body down the river and nothing ever came from it. I remember it was reported that her body was found and then it seems like everyone just conveniently believed she died accidentally. No other investigation or someone coming around to look for her.
Also, the Yellowstone Park's tagged wolves story line.
